    Valley Forge Winter Ride: Saturday Edition

    Level B, 13.5 mph, 35 miles. Meet at Valley Forge National Park - Betzwood Picnic Area (by bathrooms). The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will be available.

    Ride to Skippack for Pizza

    Level C+ / B-, 12.5-13.5 mph, 40+/- miles. Meet at Upper Dublin High School. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    It is supposed to be temp of 41. Familiar roads to the great pizza place at routes 73 & 113. No one dropped but you must be able to keep the advertised pace. Only rolling hills, no killers.


    D Ride Progression - Conshohocken

    Level D, 10 mph, 25 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Come ride the next five Satudays a little farther. March 1, Conshohocken, 25 miles, March 8, Bridgeport,35 miles, March 15, Valley Forge, Bettswoods, 45 miles, March 22, Phoenixille, 55 miles, March 29, Collegeville, 60 miles. Builting endurence, skill, and confidence. Ideal for novice riders mainly because these rides are on the Schuykill River Trail. Rain/Snow one hour to start cancells.


    Main Line Cycles Brisk Ride

    Level B+, 16-17 mph, 30-35 miles. Meet at Main Line Cycles back parking lot, Narberth, PA. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Delightful, Delicious D (and D+/C-) Ride, Saturday Edition

    This ride is for novice cyclists, newcomers to Phila., or for those seeking a gentle recovery ride. Anyone for hot coffee, tea, or cocoa, mixed with warm conversation? Scenic loop on mostly quiet, suburban roads from Glenside to Plymouth Meeting/Conshohocken to Panera Bread cafe. Indoor rest stop at mid-way point. We will climb a few hills here & there, but slow & gentle climbing (or walking up hills) is perfectly fine on this ride. We'll stop to regroup as often as needed. Cue sheets will be provided, but the route can be adjusted as needed. Ride is cancelled in the event of rain/snow/slick roads. Please contact the Leader if you have questions. Preregistering (click on the "Preregister" link here) is not required, but will save you writing time at the ride start, and helps the Leader by ensuring that your info is printed legibly.

    Level C/C+, 13-14 mph, 40-50 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 10:00 am.

    Frequently we ride the Ambler ride. We'll keep a steady pace and effort but, as necessary, will wait to regroup. There will be some hills to climb on the ride and in order for the average speed to be 13-14 mph sometimes we will be going faster than 14 mph. Bring money for a snack. Wet roads or rain at 8:00 AM or over 50% forecast for rain between 8:00 and noon cancel ride. Check the web site for up-to-date information.     Every Sunday through March, we ride 17.5 miles to Henning's Market in Harleysville, then 17.5 miles back to Valley Forge. Plan is to be back in VF by noon.


    Hike the Wissahickon

    Level hike, 5-7 miles. Meet at Valley Green Inn. The ride leaves at 9:30 am.

    Please join us on our second to last hike in the Wissahickon for this winter season. The trails are icy and you should only come on the hike if you are wearing hiking boots and ice cleats. We'll also be moving more slowly than usual to keep things safer. Well-behaved, leashed canine friends are welcome. Optional lunch at a local eatery afterward.


    Sunny Sunday D ride

    Level D, 8-12 mph, 16-20 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 12:00 pm. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Entry level ride for those new to group riding or looking to improve fitness for higher-level rides. Safety and equipment instruction provided as needed. Helmet, tube for tire and water required. Snack recommended. Route will be in the Fairmount Park area, tailored based on the abilities of the group, and will regroup as needed. Adverse weather (precipitation, excessive cold) generally cancels, so check the website in advance.


    Sunday C Spinoff

    Level C, 25-35 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 12:15 pm.

    Sunday Afternoon (Post-Hike) Winter Ramble - Chestnut Hill to East Norriton

    Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 31 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3600093.

    Pretty & meandering loop from Bruno's in Chestnut Hill, to the Panera cafe in East Norriton. Outbound via Plymouth Meeting, return via Blue Bell. Total elevation gain is 1969 feet. Rolling terrain with a few brisk climbs (including Bean Rd at mile 11), but nothing too steep. Most of the climbing is in the first half. Brief, indoor rest stop at Panera at mile 20. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain at least 13mph average, as advertised. Plan is to return by 4:30, due to the weather forecast. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic, 30-ish mile loop, usually through Montgomery County or Lower Bucks, with a brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this ride! Please bring lights, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Specific details will be posted for each Sunday's Route. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT Feb. 23. (Leader will be away.) This ride will resume on March 2. If winter weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a snow activity.


    Milton State Park Ride

    Stretch the legs after the long drive from Phila. with your first ride of the Spring Weekend event in Danville. With no food stops (quick bathroom break in Milton SP) and only 1900' of climbing, we should be able to complete this route in under two hours. Plenty of time to clean up for the evening festivities at the hotel.

    The original Conshy Night Lights ride rolls again with a new start time and format. Come join us for brisk ride to the Art Museum and back to keep those riding legs you earned over the summer. Meet at 5:45 for a PROMPT 6:00 ROLLOUT! We will have two pace groups, B and C. Each pace will always re-group at Lloyd Hall, but a full potty stop is at ride leader's discretion. Headlight and taillight required. May be occasionally shifted to Wed depending on weather. Cancellations/changes posted no later than 5 pm. Thanks to Jen Weiss and Jacobs for use of the parking lot.     This weekly road ride travels on low-traffic roads in southwestern Montgomery and northeastern Chester counties. No one dropped. This is a far better and more interesting workout than a stationary bicycle in your basement or at the gym. Let's ride ! Cold weather does NOT cancel the ride.

    For 3/7: Pretty loop from Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington, to the Panera Bread Cafe in Trevose/Feasterville for lunch. Thank Goodness they keep opening new locations of Panera - we'll have a steady supply of bike routes! Today's outbound route will take us through Oreland, Jenkintown, and Bryn Athyn. We return from Trevose via Somerton, Rockledge, and Glenside. Indoor rest stop at Panera at half-way mark. Total elevation gain 2995 feet. We will stop to regroup as needed. No-one dropped, but we will try to maintain at least 13mph, as advertised. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. Explore pretty, peaceful roads in suburban counties -- Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, etc. Starting points will vary, so that we can cycle through different regions. Please check the daily calendar for details of each Friday's route -- terrain, mileage, rest stops, etc. Cue sheets and on-line route map will be provided for each ride. Scheduled for virtually every Friday throughout the year, with a few exceptions here & there. If weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a hike/walk (on foot). As long as we are enjoying outdoor physical exercise, and Mother Nature, in the company of friends, we'll have a memorable outing.

    Come cycle each Saturday in March a little bit farther and a little bit faster and become a little stronger and get to be a little bit more confident cyclist.This Saturday's ride is to Bridgeport, across the Schuylkill River from Norristown, 35 miles. Because there is still snow on the bike paths, we will take to the streets.There is one hilly street, Umbria, but you can do it, it builds character! And besides in all my years of cycling, and the thousands of miles I have cycled, I haven't seen one hill or one mountain I couldn't get off my bike an walk up!. Rain or snow one hour before start time (KYW) cancels ride.


    Smart Cycling/Traffic Skills 101 Course, Part 1 of 2 (Part 2 class is next Saturday, March 15)

    SCU and BCP are again co-hosting the League of American Bicyclists' (LAB's) Smart Cycling/Traffic Skills 101 course, presented by Ed Hein, with assistance from Leland Mayne, John A. Petty II, and Kurt Gale. Ed, Leland, John, and Kurt are all League Certified Instructors from the League of American Bicyclists. Course takes place over two Saturdays (March 8 & 15). Hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm both days. Course includes both classroom instruction as well as outdoor sessions on your bikes to practice skills and techniques. The second day (March 15) concludes with a written exam (multiple choice) - this written test is optional, but required, if you would like to receive a certificate from LAB.     Level B, 15ish mph, 35-50 miles. Parking Lot for 202 Trail (Knapp Rd - Montgomeryville). The ride leaves at 9:30 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    This morning's Wissahickon Hike was the last hike for the winter, and this ride is the season finale for the Post-Hike Winter Rambles. As the weather gets milder later in March, the ride calendar will be filled with more rides. Today's ride is a pretty, 36-mile loop from Flourtown to Eagleville, outbound via Blue Bell and Center Square, and returning via Norristown Farm Park and Plymouth Meeting. Terrain is rolling, with a total elevation gain of 2109 ft. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain at least 13mph, as advertised. WAWA rest stop at mile 20. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the season finale party after today's hike, this ride will NOT leave from Bruno's. Meet in the parking lot of the Flourtown Shopping Center on Bethlehem Pike, north of Mill Rd. There is a McDonald's at the front of the shopping center, as well as a Giant supermarket. We BCP and SCU cyclists park near Mister P's Pizza & Pasta.

    SCU and BCP are again co-hosting the League of American Bicyclists' (LAB's) Smart Cycling/Traffic Skills 101 course, presented by Ed Hein, with assistance from Leland Mayne, John A. Petty II, and Kurt Gale. Ed, Leland, John, and Kurt are all League Certified Instructors from the League of American Bicyclists. Course takes place over two Saturdays (March 8 & 15). Hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm both days. Course includes both classroom instruction as well as outdoor sessions on your bikes to practice skills and techniques. The second day (March 15) concludes with a written exam (multiple choice) - this written test is optional, but required, if you would like to receive a certificate from LAB.     I invite you to grab your Mountain bike and join me at Lower Perkiomen Valley Park near Oaks for a flat 40 mile ride (shorter distance available) on mostly packed gravel bike trail along the Perkiomen creek up to Green Lane Park and back. 8 - 12 pace.     FOR 3/28: MONTGOMERY COUNTY MEANDER. 47 miles along pretty, rolling terrain in eastern Montgomery County. Outbound via Oreland, Ambler, Worcester. Return to Chestnut Hill via Lansdale and Blue Bell. Brief rest stop at Merrymead Farm Market at mile 21, and a sit-down lunch stop at Whole Foods Market in North Wales at mile 35. Total elevation is 2600 feet of climbing. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain at least 13mph average, as advertised. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. Explore pretty, peaceful roads in suburban counties -- Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, etc. Starting points will vary, so that we can cycle through different regions. Cue sheets and on-line route map will be provided for each ride. If weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a hike/walk (on foot). As long as we are enjoying outdoor physical exercise, and Mother Nature, in the company of friends, we'll have a memorable outing.

This Saturday's ride is to Collegeville on the Schuylkill River Trail and Perkiomen CreekTrail.     Join us getting in some early spring miles AND performing a civic duty. (BCP is an Adopt-A-Highway co-sponsor, along with the Brandywine Bike Club, for a stretch of Yellow Springs Rd. outside of Valley Forge Nat'l Park). This ride from Flourtown will get us to Valley Forge via Norristown Farm Park and the Schuylkill River Trail. Quick bathroom break at the Betzwood picnic area of VFNP before starting the clean-up (which will be about an hour), and a quick bathroom break at the VF Visitor Center on the return. The meeting point for the clean-up activity will be the small gravel parking lot at the bottom of Yellow Springs Road, immediately after the white covered bridge over Valley Creek. Refreshments, snacks, work gloves, safety vests, and trash bags will be provided for the clean-up project. Ideally, we'd like to have a crew of 8 volunteers for the clean-up, for efficient teamwork. Please note: there will be a total of 4 Adopt-a-Highway clean-up events during the course of 2014.

The slower ride leaders will do the shorter loops.We will ride till sunset then gather at the Great American Pub in Wayne afterwards to discuss the upcoming ride season at COS.
