See a Pro Criterium race in Doylestown. This year there will be both a men's and women's race with some local riders in the field. We will ride up the 202 Parkway Trail, make a rest stop at WEIS Markets in Doylestown, then hang out at turn 5 of the course. From there, you can see a VERY fast turn 5 and the entire back straight of the course. The loop is just over a mile long, so the racers will pass by in just under 3 minutes per lap. The Doylestown Arts Festival is held on the same weekend in the downtown area. Big crowds, lots of stuff to see. Turn 5 has been the least crowded part of the course for the past 2 years, and an excellent place to see the race. I will shepherd the flock to the rest stop and turn 5. After that, those who want to leave early please let me know that you are no longer on the ride. Start location is Upper Dublin High School beside the baseball fields. To arrive on time for the start, THE RIDE LEAVES AT 8:15 AM. GET UP EARLY. START LOCATION: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6380699 RACE INFO: http://buckscountyclassic.com/

    Leader: Tim Carey, , 267-414-9037

Second in series of cycling up the Delaware River, this week up the NJ side to Burlington City. There is a great donut shop on the way and a wonderful NJ dinner for lunch. We will be cycling close to the river a good ways. We will take the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge back into Philly, walking our bikes across the span.

Bike Ride to the Navy Yard (was previously going to be a ride under the Frankford El)

Level C, 13 mph, 25/45 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.
    Leader: Clifford Schwinger, , 215-872-3559

Slight change in our route....we were going to ride under the Frankford El, but I just learned that the Philadelphia Navy Yard will be open to the public this Saturday (it is normally closed on Saturdays), so we are going to the Navy Yard! You will enjoy this ride! (We will do the "ride under the El in October.) The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Fall Festival will be taking place at the Navy Yard on Saturday. So whether you are into gardening, battleships or Victorian architecture, this ride will have something of interest for you! There will be food trucks, vendors and lots of interesting things to see. We will ride to the Navy Yard via Delaware Avenue and will stop at Pier 53 - a newly renovated pier park on the river. Pier 53 was the pier on which most early 20th century immigrants entering the country via Philadelphia arrived. The pier was abandoned for years and was just transformed into a park - complete with a boardwalk and observation platform (a work of art called the Land Buoy). Once inside the Navy Yard we will ride around the facility looking at the Victorian architecture, admiral's houses, machine shops, dry docks (did you ever see a dry dock up close?) and mothballed ships. Then we can stop at the Fall Festival and get a bite to eat and check out flowers. You have the option of either starting at my house (39 Lanfair Rd, Cheltenham) from which we will leave at 7:30, or starting at the formal entrance to the Azalea Garden behind the Art Museum from which we will leave at 9:00. The ride will be 45 miles if you leave from my house or 25 miles if you start at the Azalea Garden. We will be back at the Azalea Garden no later than 1:00 and back at my house by 2:00. This is a "C" pace ride (13 mph). No cue sheets. If you are driving to Art Museum, note that there is a big 5k race that starts in front of the Art Museum at 8:00, so you will not be able to find a parking spot near the museum. Your best bet is to either start from my house, or park on Midvale Avenue in East Falls, or park in the public lot on Kelly Drive in East Falls located underneath the twin bridges (Route 1). It's a scenic 4-mile ride along Kelly Drive from East Falls to the Azalea Garden.

Saturday B-/C+ ride to Valley Forge

Level C+/B-, 13.5-15 mph, 45-55 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 9:15 am.

Ride heads to Valley Forge with a rest stop at Wegman's in K of P. The ride involves a steady climb out to Valley Forge but nothing terribly long or extreme. The return is flatter with possibly one challenging climb thrown in. We wait and regroup at the top of hills. Bring money for lunch. Wet roads or rain at 8:00 AM or over 50% forecast for rain between 8:00 and noon cancel ride. Check the web site for up-to-date information. In order to maintain the advertised pace we will be going faster than 15mph on flat terrain.

Convenience store quick stop at mile 23, then at mile 33, a sit-down lunch stop at the bakery/cafe in St. Peter's, which overlooks the Creek. On the return, there is a convenience store at mile 50, if another quick stop is needed. Elevation gain is 4928 ft. We will stop to regroup after climbs, as needed. (For the 52-mile option: On the return trip, there is a self-guided short-cut which will shave off about 4.5 miles.)

Friday Frolic w/Linda. This is the generic description. Specific details will be posted on daily calendar for each Friday.

    Leader: Linda McGrane, , 267-251-7862

Enjoy scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. We'll explore pretty, peaceful roads in suburban counties -- Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, etc. Starting points will vary, so that we can cycle through different regions. Depending on the destination, starting point may be in Conshohocken, Flourtown, Jenkintown, Wayne, Valley Forge, etc. Please check the daily calendar for details of each Friday's route -- terrain, mileage, rest stops, etc. Cue sheets and on-line route map will be provided for each ride. Scheduled for virtually every Friday throughout the year, with a few exceptions here & there. If weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a hike/walk (on foot). As long as we are enjoying outdoor physical exercise, and Mother Nature, in the company of friends, we'll have a memorable outing.

Bike ride under the Frankford El

Level C, 13 mph, 25 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.
    Leader: Clifford Schwinger, , 215-872-3559

This ride is a tour of Philadelphia that you won't see from the duck boats or tour buses - a meandering ride through a section of the city not often explored. We will be riding under the Frankford El from Front and Girard up to Bridge Street. Along the way we will stop at some unique and fascinating places - a potpourri of Philadelphia history from the late 1600's to the present. We will leave from the Azalea Garden behind the Art Museum at 9:00 and return by about 1:00. We will stop for a coffee/snack/rest room break midway through the ride at a coffee shop in Frankford. This is a "C" pace ride (13 mph) but it is a challenging ride and is not for the faint-of-heart. You must be comfortable riding on city streets. Make sure your bike is in good mechanical condition as we will not be riding through the nicest part of town. Bring two spare tubes. If you have a flashing rear light - bring it. HELMET REQUIRED! If you are driving to Art Museum, note that there is a 2-hour limit on parking in the lot behind the museum. Your best bet is to park on Sedgley Drive (the road that intersects Kelly Drive at Lloyd Hall) or on Midvale Avenue in East Falls or in the public lot on Kelly Drive in East Falls located underneath the twin bridges (Route 1). It's a scenic 4-mile ride along Kelly Drive from East Falls to the Azalea Garden.

    Ride to Chestnut Hill

Level D+ C-, 10-11 mph, 22 miles. West River Drive Plaza/Pergola (Trellis) at foot of West River Drive. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.
    Leader: Owen Sindler, , 215-990-3207

Join me for a ride up to Chestnut Hill via Midvale Ave. I plan to get some snacks at Weavers Way co-op on Carpenter Lane and eat them at Carpenters Woods (http://www.focw.org/directions/#location) before we return to Center City. It's a bit of a climb to the "Hill" but a downhill run on the way home. Leader:Owen Sindler 2159903207
