Saturday, August 3 - Fort Washington to the Musikfest in Bethlehem. Class C+, 100 miles, 12-13 mph. Ride starts 7:00 from the SEPTA R5 Fort Washington station just off Bethlehem Pike. Route is marked. Shorter ride options starting from Hatfield, 60 miles or Quakertown, 40 miles. Two hours will be spent taking in the sounds at the festival. http://www.musikfest.org/general.asp. Saturday, August 3 - Ridley Creek to French Creek. Class A/B+, 75 miles. A very hilly ride, with at least seven difficult climbs. Both you and your bike should be in good shape before attempting this adventure. Start from Ridley Creek State Park, Lot #15 at 8:00 sharp. At least three rest stops are planned, more if weather dictates. I-95 south to I-476 (Blue Route) north to Rt 1 west (bypass, not Baltimore Pk) to Rt 252 north. Go through signal, pass Rose Tree Park on your right, then take first left (Providence Rd) to left on Gradyville Rd. (4 way SS) to left at main park entrance (look for sign to park HQ). We will take in many views of the Chesapeake Bay and lower Susquehanna River on this new version of the ride. Saturday, August 10 - Sanctuary Ramble. Class C, 50 miles. Starts 9:00 from the Italian Fountain. A traditional and astonishingly beautiful ride that uses shady streets and mostly lightly traveled suburban roads through Bethayres and the Pennypack Nature Center. A stop at Bryn Athyn Cathedral is an option. The route passes wildlife and bird sanctuaries and the landscaped campuses of several notable religious institutions. Friday, August 16 - Bike to the Ballpark. All Classes. See great baseball in a stadium the Phillies can only dream about--with Flying Fish on tap and real food, not that Vet plastic stuff. Meets 6 PM at Trophy Bikes, 311 Market St. Ride over Ben Franklin Bridge walkways for a 6:35 game start. Afterwards, we'll slip back to the Ben Franklin (open till 10pm) while everyone else is stuck in the parking lot and enjoy the after-game fireworks from the Ben walkway. (optional ferry ride back--about $5). Bring lights, a helmet and lock--bikes will be parked directly in front of the ticket windows, which stay staffed till after the game. Saturday, August 24 - Oregon or Bust. Class B, 15-16 mph, 88 miles. This is another Eduardo creation that I am planning to tackle in preparation for my September ride across Oregon. An abundance of scenic climbing in Montgomery County and the hills surrounding the Oley Valley. The terrain and distance alone make this a challenging ride, so I intend to keep the pace manageable. Sunday August 25 - Chesterbrook to French Creek State Park. Class C+, 55 miles, 11+ mph avg. Meet at the Manhattan Bagel Shop in the Chesterbrook Center at 8:00 for breakfast; ride starts at 8:30. This challenging ride uses Rt 401 to Rt 345 to the park. Return is via Harmonyville, Coventryville, Pughtown and Kimberton. Expect some hills. Stops to regroup as required; no one dropped. Sunday, August 25 - Chester County Chumpy. Class B pace, 15-16 mph, DIFFICULT terrain, 104 miles. Meet at Bruno's for the 7:30 start of this lovely and challenging ride. There may be an optional long and challenging partially dirt climb, but I will let the riders determine their preference. The first convenience store stop is at mile 70, so bring plenty of food and drink for impromptu rest stops. After the difficult Chester County section we will take the bike path back to Philadelphia. Probably not a good ride for a first century, as it is unsupported and pretty hilly. The goal will be to ride as a group, supporting one another and enjoying the terrain together, so be prepared to stay with the group on the flats and wait at the tops of all climbs to regroup.
