This is our NEW ride listing format. The Regular Weekly Rides are listed first by day. The individual daily and weekend rides follow below.

Regular Weekly Rides & Activities January 2001


Sundays

Sunday Morning Breakfast Ride. Class C, up to 35 miles. Bring locks. Meet 8:45, 22nd & Spring Garden, for a delightful ride to a delightful place to have a delightful breakfast. Winter rides may be canceled if snow or ice are on the ground or if the temperature goes below 32.

January 28 - TBA.Bulldog Ride. Class A-/B+, 45-65 miles, average speed 16-18 mph depending on the terrain. Meets most Sundays at the Bulldog statue, in the triangular park at 25th St, Fairmount & Pennsylvania Aves. Leaves noon sharp. No cue sheets, follow the leader. B Ramble. Class B, 14-15 mph, 45-50 miles. Meet at the Italian Fountain at 11 am (NOTE EARLIER WINTER START). See Daily Ride List for leader and route description.B'tweener Ramble has been canceled until further notice.

Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride. Class D, usually 12- 22 miles. Meets every Sunday at noon in front of Lloyd Hall, #1 Boathouse Row, on Kelly Drive. For the beginner who wishes to improve her/his cycling skills, for those new to Philadelphia who want to explore the little-known, out-of-the-way places in the city and near suburbs. Show and Go.

Sunny Sunday Spin-Off Ride. Class C, usually 25-30 miles. A true C ride which cheerfully waits to regroup. All welcome. Meets 12:15 at the rock near the Italian Fountain, behind the Art Museum.

Tuesdays

Fridays

Wallyball. January 26. Come to the Aquatic & Fitness Center at Riverside Racquet at 600 Righters Ferry Road in Bala Cynwyd at 7 pm for a fun and invigorating game of Wallyball. What is it? Volleyball in a racquetball court. We play until at least 9:00. Cost is $7.50 per person. Bring your own lock for a locker. Call the club at 610-664-6464 for directions. Individual Rides

Saturday, January 6 - The Big Sombrero. Class B, 35 miles, 15+ mph. We'll leave from the Art Museum and head out to Bryn Mawr and Gladwyne over a combination of flat, rolling and hilly terrain. We'll probably do at least one climb up from the river to the top of the ridge in Gladwyne. THERE WILL BE NO FOOD STOP, so bring energy bars and liquids. I may or may not have a cue sheet; but in any event we'll work together and try not to meander out of Montgomery County. Snow, ice or freezing temperatures at the start time will cancel ride, so contact me if you are in doubt. Meet 10:00 at the Italian Fountain for a prompt start. Sunday, January 7 - Skiing at Blue Mountain. Meet at 9:00 in the base mountain lodge or 7:30 at the parking lot of the Plymouth Meeting Mall (under the mall sign) for a carpool. Sunday, January 7 - It's Wednesday on Sunday. Class B/B-, and C+ welcome, 12-15 mph, 33-45 miles, mostly rolling terrain with four hills. Are you missing those ever-popular Wednesday night rides from Bikeworks in Harleysville? Come with me as we retrace the extremely popular Wednesday night summer route. For those of you not content with a mere 32 miles, we will loop past our starting point and pick up an additional semi-flat 14 miles. This is a great opportunity for some of the slower riders to experience the longer route. No rest stops or cue sheets will be provided. However, this will be a leisurely ride with the main focus on fitness and fun. We will regroup at the top of each hill and NO RIDERS WILL BE DROPPED. Rain, snow, or temperatures below 25 degrees at the start cancels. The ride leaves from Indian Valley Bikeworks, corner of Maple Ave & Route 63 in Harleysville, Pa. at 9:00 sharp. Wednesday, January 10 - Make it a Night. Ice Skating at the Blue Cross River Rink. Start time is 6:30. We'll skate for two hours and then head out to a local eatery for dinner. Bring your own skates, or rent them at the rink. Costs from last year were $6 for entry and $3 for rentals. On-street parking is free on Wednesday nights. We usually park on the Chestnut Street bridge over I-95. Event canceled only if it's raining. Friday, January 12 - BCP Annual Awards Banquet! Meiji-En, Pier 19 on North Columbus Blvd. 6:30 - 11 pm.

Saturday, January 13 - Brunch in Rising Sun. Class B, 47 miles. Leaving 8:30 from the Big Elk Mall behind the McDonald's at Rts 213 and 40 in Elkton, Md. We will explore some new roads on our way to Rising Sun for an indoor brunch. If the weather is nice we may add extra miles but don't bet on it. Saturday, January 13 - Northeast Ramble with the Trickeys. Class C, 30 miles. Madge and Dick will lead their leisurely paced ride in the Northeast, all west of the Delaware River. Lunch stop; no cue sheets. Meet at the Burger King, north of Oxford Circle on Castor Ave. Leaves 9:30 sharp. Call if the temperature looks less than 32 degrees at ride start time. Saturday, January 13 - Belmont Plateau MTB. Level C. Meet 10:00 at the Italian Fountain for a 3-hour ride. If temp is below 30 no ride! Leader: Paul Winkfield, 215-223-9871, pwink@bellatlantic.net.

Saturday, January 13 - Fixed-Gear Ride. Class B, 30 miles, 14-15 mph average. Departs 10:00 from Betzwood Bridge, lower parking lot. No derailleurs allowed. Single-speed free cogs OK. All bikes must have at least one brake, freehub bikes should have 2 brakes. We will do the same route we did in December. I recommend a 65" or 70" gear or thereabouts. Saturday, January 13 - Road or Trail. Class B-/C or MTB. Approximately 30 miles around eastern Montgomery County at a 13- 15 mph pace. Leave 10:00 from the Glenside Library at Keswick Ave and Waverly Rd in Glenside. The pace will be leisurely and the route will be rolling with a few hills, but nothing nasty. If the temperature is below 30 degrees or snow is on the roads at the start of the ride, we will revert to a mountain bike ride in Pennypack Park originating at the Pine Road entrance. Sunday, January 14 - B Ramble: Ambler Scrambler. Class B, 15 mph, 40 miles. Meet at the Italian Fountain at 11:00 (NOTE THE START TIME). We will ride up to Chestnut Hill and on to Oreland before dining in Ambler at Chez 7/11. Snow, ice, or below-freezing forecast will cancel the ride. Call early in the morning if you are in doubt. Monday, January 15 - Martin Luther King Ride. Class C+/C, 35+/- miles, to Anapa's in Burlington County for breakfast. Meet at 10:00 at the Wawa, Union Mill and Larchmont Roads (between Ark and Hartford Roads), Mt. Laurel, N.J. East on N.J. route 38, past I-295, approx 3 traffic lights to right on Hartford. After 2 or 3 lights, left on Union Mill Rd. Left at traffic light on Larchmont Rd to Wawa. Leader: Bob Harris, 609-871-5168, harris609@home.com

Monday, January 15 - Anne's MLK Day Mystery Ride. Class C, approx 30 miles. Anne wants to celebrate her day off by leading a ride and she wants us to join her - but she's not sure where she wants to go! If you want, call and tell her where to go. Better yet, join her and Steve T. for a fun ride to somewhere for some hot goodies. Rain or temperature below 35 degrees cancels. Meet at 11:00 at the Italian Fountain. Saturday, January 20 - Spring Ahead. Class B+. Tired of spinning class? Suffering from SAD? Come out for a 30-35 mile/ B+ paced ride retracing summer's popular Thursday night route. We'll ride as a group - NO CUE SHEET. We may add a few miles if the conditions are good. No go if ice, rain or snow. Meet 10:00 at the Italian Fountain. Leader: Michael Raducha, 215-574-0258.

Saturday, January 20 - Bike or Ski. Class C ride, or novice XC- skiing in Valley Forge Park. If there is no snow, we will road bike the BicyclePA S Route from Betzwood to Pughtown, 26 miles, St Peters, 34 miles or Elverson, 44 miles. All mileages are round trip. Meet in the lower parking lot at Valley Forge Visitor Center. You must call or e-mail for start time and equipment to bring. However, whenever there is more than one inch of snow covering frozen ground locally, call or e-mail me. An ad hoc trip will be announced at that time. Sunday, January 21 - January Thaw or Frozen Popsicle. Class B, C+ welcome, 40-50 miles, 14-15 mph rolling average. Depending on the weather, we'll be one of the above. Regardless, come out and get your miles in. Ride starts 10:00 from the Chadds Ford Wawa. There'll be a cue sheet, but we may vary from it based on the group's desire. Ride cancels if it's rainy or if the roads are hazardous. Take I-95 south to Rt 322 West, to Rt 1 South, cross Rt 202 and the Wawa is at the next light (2.5 miles) at the junction of Rt 1 and 100 in Chadds Ford. Park behind the Wawa. Saturday, January 27 - Central Bucks County and N.J. Class B, approx 54 miles, 15 mph. Flat and rolling terrain with a few hills. Goes to Doylestown area, then east through Mechanicsville and Point Pleasant. We will cross into Frenchtown, N.J. for lunch, then head south on Rt 29 to Stockton. We then return to Pa. to continue the ride south on River Rd, Rt 32. Leaves promptly at 9:00 from Bowman's Hill Wild Flower Preserve in Bucks County, on Rt 32, just 2 miles south of New Hope. From Center City, take I-95 to exit 31, New Hope. Left at the exit for about 4 to 5 miles to Rt 32 and then 2 more miles to the preserve. Leader: Luis Figueroa, 215-673-1170, Luisbikefiggs@aol.com.

Saturday, January 27 - Lunch at the Coventry Diner. Class B (C+ welcome), 45 miles, 14 mph. We'll take a hilly route up to Coventry and then glide all the way back down the ridge to Valley Forge. We may add the climb up Clothier Springs Road for those looking for some additional training. Meet 10:00 in the lower lot of the Valley Forge National Park Visitors' Center. Saturday, January 27 - Lunch in Doylestown. Class C, 35 miles. Leaves 10:30 from the Italian Fountain, goes to Doylestown and back. Inclement weather or forecast high less than 35 degrees cancels.
