Tuesday, January 1 - Get Off Your Rump (and) Ride! Class B+/B, 15-16 mph. Don't stay out too late on New Year's Eve. Ring in the New Year riding with Sally and Dana as they take you on a 30+ mile journey. We'll do the infamous George Sexton's Thursday night route. Come prepared to share your cycling resolutions! Saturday, January 5 - A June Ride in January!?! Class B, 14-15 mph, 62 miles. Come on out the first Saturday in January and do the Freedom Valley Metric route (usually held in June), complete with rolling hills and very brief stops! You can check out the cue on the BCP library. We'll leave from the Italian Fountain @ 0900. Snow, rain, or daytime high temps 32 or lower will cancel. Call by 0800 if questionable. Saturday, January 5 - Folding Bikes Ride. Class C, 20 miles. All wheels welcome. Learn about folding bikes while riding through Lancaster county with the friendly members of the Bike Friday Club of America: http://home.dejazzd.com/rlg717/ Starts 10:00 from Paradise Elementary School, in Paradise, Lancaster County, at Belmont Rd and US Route 30. School parking lot is accessible from US Route 30, North Belmont Road. Ride will be 20 miles, longer (depending on group) through gently rolling terrain past Amish farmland. Saturday, January 5 - Upper Main Line Route to Chanticleer. Class C+, 12-13 mph, 32 miles. Starts 10:00 from Delancey St. Bagels in the Wynnewood Shopping Center on Wynnewood Road East just off Lancaster Avenue. Get there early and join us for breakfast. Pizza stop at the Wayne Piece of Pizza. Ride cruises past many estates including Appleford, The Willows, Chanticleer, along a section of the Freedom Valley route. Expect hills along the way. If you want to start from Lloyd Hall at 9, call and we will wait for you. Snow or daytime high below 39F cancels. Cue sheets provided. Sunday, January 6 - Just Because It's Sunday. Class B, 14-15 mph, 35 miles. A new ride in my Sunday series without the climbs! On this ride we'll cruise some of the other routes throughout the area while attempting to avoid the major climbs. No Goldmines or Crushers on this ride. Rain, snow, or temperatures below 30 degrees at the start cancels the ride. The ride leaves from Indian Valley Bikeworks (Maple Ave & Route 63 in Harleysville, PA) at 9:30 sharp. Saturday, January 12 - N.J. Bob's Breakfast Ride. Class C, 12 to 14 mph, 20, 34 miles; distance will depend on weather. Leaves 9:30 from Southampton Municipal Bldg in Vincentown, N.J. Take Rt 295 to Rt 38; exit E approx 2 miles to Hartford Rd; go right approx 3 traffic lights to Church Rd; go left approx 6 miles to Main St in Vincentown, go right to 206. Saturday, January 12 - Freedom Valley Route to Valley Forge. Class C, 35 to 40 miles. Starts 10:00 from the rock by the Italian Fountain (the usual place) on the west side of the Art Museum and heads to Valley Forge on the Freedom Valley route -expect hills! A quick stop at Valley Forge Visitor Center and then head back on the Schuylkill River Bike Path with a food stop in Conshohocken or Manayunk. Sunday, January 13 - Winter Ride #3. Class B, 15-16 mph, 42 miles. We return to the New Jersey backwoods. The ride will take us to some new roads through the woods of Hunterdon County. It is winter and the scenery may not be as pretty as the rest of the year, but these roads will provide the serenity found only on roads undisturbed by the sound of heavy traffic. The ride starts at 10:00 from the New Jersey side of Washington's Crossing. Take I-95 north to the first exit in New Jersey, Rt 29. Take Rt 29 north for about 2 miles to Rt 546. Make a left on Rt 546 and the parking lot is immediately on your right before the bridge. Rain, snow or temperatures below 32 degrees cancel. Saturday, January 19 - Hike the Wissahickon. Class B, 7 miles. Hike to such storied "old Philadelphia" sites along the lower Wissahickon creek as Lovers Leap, the 100 Steps, Revolution-era Rittenhouse Town, and the William Penn Toleration monument. Halfway food stop at a convenience store. Bring water and snacks. Hiking boots recommended. Starts 10:00 from Walnut Lane golf course parking lot at Walnut Lane and Magdalena St. From Center City take Kelly Drive to Ridge Ave. to right on Walnut Lane. Saturday January 19 - Fixed-Gear Ride. Class B, about 30 miles, 14-15 mph average. Departs 10:00 from Betzwood Bridge, lower parking lot. Single-speed free cogs OK. All bikes must have at least one brake, freehub bikes should have 2 brakes. I recommend a 65" or 70" gear or thereabouts. Temperatures below freezing, snow, or cold rain cancels the ride. Saturday, January 19 - Bike or Ski Valley Forge Park. Class C, 12- 13 mph, 16 miles. Biking or Novice skiing. Meet in the lower parking lot at Valley Forge Visitor Center. Saturday, January 26 - Tour de Evansburg. Class B, 14-15 mph, 45 miles. Hilly. This is my favorite "training" ride, up through Evansburg State Park, then around Valley Forge and through some very picturesque parts of the Main Line. It is hilly, but they are nice hills. Ride leaves from Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Avenues, at 9:00. Rain, snow, significant chance of ice, or high temperatures forecast below 25 or above 100 Fahrenheit (you never know this year) cancels. Saturday, January 26 - Gourmet Coffee Express. Class C, about 25 miles. Starts 10:00 in front of Lloyd Hall, #1 Boathouse row, on Kelly Drive. A very friendly and sociable ride from Center City to a suburban coffee shop where we can warm ourselves for the jaunt back to the starting point. The coffee shop destination and distance will depend on the temperature at start time. The warmer it is, the longer the ride and vice versa. Possible destinations: Rydal, Chestnut Hill, Manayunk. Ride cancels if the temperature is below 32F. This is the second in the series of Ann's three rides to encourage us to get in some biking miles during the winter. Pennypack MTB Ride. Class B, 16+ miles. Mountain Bike Ride on the singletrack trails of Pennypack Park. Leaves 9:00 from the Rhawn St parking lot, between Ryan and Rowland Sts. Terrain is rolling hills. Permits are required and are the same permits used for the Valley Green/Wissahickon trails. Trail permit request can be found at http://www.phillybikeclub.org/mtb.html. Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride. Class D, usually 12 - 22 miles. Meets every Sunday at noon in front of Lloyd Hall, #1 Boathouse Row, on Kelly Drive. For the beginner who wishes to improve his/her cycling skills, for those new to Philadelphia who want to explore the little-known, out-of-the-way places in the city and near suburbs. All January rides are Show and Go.
Sunny Sunday Spin-Off Ride. Class C, usually 25-30 miles. A true C ride which cheerfully waits to regroup. All welcome. Meets 12:15 at the rock near the Italian Fountain, behind the Art Museum. After Work Ride In the Dark. Class B, 25-30 miles. If the roads are clear and the projected evening temperature is above 30 degrees, we'll ride the quiet back-roads of Gloucester and Salem Counties in southern New Jersey. Bring lights and wear reflective clothing. Call or email leader to confirm that the ride is happening. Start 6:00 at Albert's Organics, Bridgeport, NJ. From Phila, take 95 South to Rt 322 East, over the Commodore Barry Bridge to NJ. Then first exit onto Rt 130S for about 1 mile, and first left onto High Hill Road. Night Riders. Class C, 10-20 miles. As the daylight fades, we don our bike lights and ride into the dark. Come for a spin through southern Delco. Lights and reflectors and other night riding gear are necessary. Meet at 6:00 in the parking lot of the Pathmark on MacDade Blvd in Folsom, Ridley Township. This ride will continue through the winter. However, the ride may be canceled due to the weather, including the cold. You must call the leader to confirm ride is going. Wallyball. January 4 and 18. Come to The Aquatic & Fitness Center at Riverside Racquet at 600 Righters Ferry Road in Bala Cynwyd at 7 PM for a fun and invigorating game of Wallyball. What is it? Volleyball in a racquetball court. We play until at least 9:00. Cost is $7.50 per person. Bring your own lock for a locker.
