Saturday, January 11 - Bike or Ski. Class C, 12-13 mph, 26 miles. Class C biking or Novice skiing. Meet 10:00 in the lower parking lot at Valley Forge Visitor Center. If there is no snow, we will road bike the BicyclePA S Route from Betzwood to Pughtown, 26 miles, St Peters, 34 miles or Elverson PA, 44 miles. All mileages are round trip. Buckman Ski shops and REI rent cross country skis. You must call or e-mail to confirm time and what equipment to bring. And whenever there is more than one inch of snow covering frozen ground locally, call or e-mail the leader. An ad hoc trip will be announced at that time. Leader: Bill Cotton, 215-663-8364 (home), 215-559-2910(cell), billcotton@comcast.net.

Saturday, January 11 - Take to the Woods! MTB or hybrid, Class C, 9 or 18 miles. 9:00 start on the north side (Philly) of Route 420 in Prospect Park, Pa, at the John Heinz Wildlife Reserve side lot. From there we'll ride the Reserve's pathways observing winter nature (we may stop to look). The Reserve is noted for birds, deer, foxes, rabbits, and a whole lot more. We'll enjoy a low-impact mountain bike ride from Route 420 to the Reserve's nature center located at the edge of Philadelphia. If it's open we'll stop inside for a look at the displays (bring a lock). Afterwards we'll head back to Route 420 by a different path. If anyone wants to, we can do a second round, as it is only a 9-mile loop. Please note that the trail is very tame. This makes the hybrid bike an excellent alternative if you don't own a mountain bike. Mountain bike rides like this one can be enjoyable alternatives to the road even if the temperatures are low. So don't let the cold deter you. Wet weather or recent heavy rains will cancel as navigating the trail will not be practical. Light or old snow may still allow the ride to occur. Call ahead. Leader: Frank Jackson, 610-534-3978 (eve), 215-537-4299 (day), fjackson@rohmhaas.com.

Saturday, January 11 - Skippack. Class B-, 14 mph, 40-50 miles. Distance depends on how cold the weather is. Sit-down lunch stop. Explore Eastern and Central Montgomery County. Meet at Bruno's at 9:45 for a 10:00 start. Leader: Jeff Bakely, 215-843-1093, jbake@snip.net.

Sunday, January 12 - Kimberton Whole Foods Cafe. Class C+/C, about 30 miles. Leaves at 9:30 from Manhattan Bagel Shop in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center, on Chesterbrook Blvd, which can be accessed from U.S. 202 or Pa. 252. Arrive earlier if you want breakfast. Optional start from visitor parking at Valley Forge Park, but you must call SteveT to arrange for it! A pretty stretch along Pickering creek. Even a covered bridge crossing of French creek. Half way orgasmic food stop. Expect nice scenery and some moderate hills. No one dropped. Stops to regroup as needed. Cue sheets will be provided. A joint ride with BBC. Wet or very cold weather may shorten or cancel the ride. Leaders: Arnie Roseman 610-640-4529, asr3@fcc.net, and Steve Trobovic, 610-687-9229, srtrobovic@juno.com.

We'll try a different route to New Hope, hitting the highest point in eastern Montgomery County. The route will take us a little north of New Hope to catch one of my favorite roads. A short stop in New Hope is planned. Rain, snow, bad road conditions or high temperature below freezing cancels the ride. Leader: George Koefler, 215-657-4531, george.koefler@verizon.net.

Sunday, January 19 - Chestnut Hill Polar Express. Class B. Two options: 60 and 50 miles at 14 mph avg, hilly. How cold will it be? How much snow will we have? We'll find out as we make our way to the famous Pepper Mill in Goshen, Chester County for the traditional winter warm-up with blueberry pancakes. The hills of Manayunk, Gladwyne, Radnor, Villanova and other sections of the Main Line will definitely open our appetite. Starts 9:00 (60-mile loop) from The Market Square of Chestnut Hill, next to the post office on Crittenden St (between Willow Grove Ave and Mermaid Ln), 2 blocks north of Germantown Ave. Or if you prefer to start from Manayunk (50-mile loop), we'll swing by Shurs Ln & Main St by 9:30.
