Friday, July 4 - The Bright Side of the Eagle. Class B. 77 miles at 15 mph avg. Moderately hilly with a few tough climbs and incredible long descents. The Dark Side of the Hawk turned out to be the Dark Side of the Rain last month, so we'll try again on Independence Day and hopefully we'll have a brighter day with the Eagle. This is a very scenic ride in Lehigh and Schuylkill counties. I keep changing sections of the ride every time we do it, so there is always something new to see. The route crosses the Blue Mountain ridge twice, first at route 309 on the way out and then at Hawk Mt on the way back. There will be 2 stops. In Schuylkill County we'll travel along a sparsely settled little valley that crosses the watershed from the Lehigh River to the Schuylkill River and after enjoying one of the nicest descents in the area we'll stop in Orwigsburg. The challenging northern side of Hawk Mt (the dark one!!) will be waiting for us afterwards and once we reach the top we'll enjoy a rewarding easy section back to Trexlertown. Starts 8:00 from the Trexlertown velodrome. I-476 North to Allentown exit. Rt 22 West to exit 14. Follow Rt 100 south for about 2 miles and turn right onto Rt 222 West, then 2nd right onto Moser Rd, then turn left into velodrome parking lot, near the port-a-potty. Call if there is a chance of rain. Email if you want a cue sheet. Leader: Eduardo Ruchelli, 215-572-0753, edr@mail.med.upenn.edu.
