BCP Ride List for June 2004

Tuesday, June 1 - Mailing the June Newsletter. Meet 6:30 at Wolf, Block, Schorr and Solis-Cohen LLP, 1650 Arch Street, southeast corner 17th & Arch Sts. Coordinator: Tom Witt, 215-977-2164.

Saturday, June 5 - Black River Century. Class B, 97 miles at 15 mph avg, hilly in the middle 1/3 of the route. We'll ride through some of the nicest sections of northern Hunterdon County, NJ: Tewksbury Township between Pottersville and Califon. This area is full of ravines with beautiful creeks and lush vegetation along wonderful roads. Although you should expect to climb here, the ride starts along relatively flat roads in the farmlands of West and East Amwell Townships and, after climbing out from the Round Valley Reservoir, returns along the flat plateau around Locktown. Stops in Pottersville and Oldwick. Starts 7:30 from the Village Square shopping center on Route 29 & Cherry St, near US 202, in Lambertville, NJ. I-95 to Trenton, take the first exit in NJ after the bridge, and follow SR 29 north for 10 miles to Lambertville. Shopping center is on your left after going through town, before US 202. Call if weather is questionable. Email if you want a cue sheet. Leader: Eduardo Ruchelli, 215-572-0753, edr@mail.med.upenn.edu

Saturday, June 5 - Breakfast Ride to Doylestown. Class B-, 13-14 mph, 65-70 miles. Meet at the Italian Fountain at 6:50 (this is not a misprint) for a 7:00 sharp departure. We ride to eat breakfast at the Cyber Stop Cafe in Doylestown, so bring money. This is a relatively flat ride with a few moderate climbs. Precipitation at start time cancels. Leaders: Henry Miller, 215- 977-2182, hmiller@wolfblock.com, and Bob Silverman, 215-977-2282, rsilverman@wolfblock.

Saturday, June 5 - Last Loop? Class B, 14-16 mph, 47 miles. I've been doing this ride for about 10 years now, and this might be the last time. Come with me for a farewell tour of Evansburg Park, Clothier Springs Road, the justly infamous Valley Road, and the thrill of Hollow Road's long downhill. Meet at Bruno's at 9. There is a convenience store stop at about the halfway point. Leader: David L. Johnson, 610-828-3708, david.johnson@lehigh.edu.

Sunday, June 6 - Red, White, or Brandywine? There will be plenty of all of them and you can taste them all! Class B-, 62 miles at 13 mph, rolling to moderately hilly. Stops in Landenberg and near Coatesville. Brandywine scenery at its best. Starts at 8 from Shaw's Bridge Park near Pocopson. US 202 south to SR 926 west. After expressway ends, turn right onto SR 926 and continue for 2.5 miles. At T, bear right onto SR 100 north (unmarked). Do not follow SR 926 any longer, and continue on SR 100 (unmarked) for 1.5 miles, then turn left onto Creek Rd, where SR 52 bears right. Go on Creek Rd for 0.5 mile and turn left onto Shaw's Creek Park. Call if weather is questionable. Email if you want a cue sheet. Leaders: Ida and Eduardo Ruchelli, 215-572-0753, edr@mail.med.upenn.edu.

Sunday, June 6 - Bulldog Ride. For strong B riders. 50-60 miles. See weekly ride calendar for details. Because of the US Pro bike race, we will only go if people call in advance. We will leave from Memorial Hall at noon. Leader: Bruce Taubman, 215-735-7935.

Wednesday, June 9 - BCP Monthly Meeting. 6:30 PM at the Imperial Inn, 146 N. 10th St, Philadelphia, 215-627-2299. All BCP members are encouraged to attend. To get something on the agenda: David Johnson, 610-828-3708, david.johnson@lehigh.edu.

Saturday, June 12 - Kountry Kitchen. Class C, 12-14 mph, about 40 miles. Meet at Kingsway High School, Rtes 322 & 551 just across the Commo. Barry Bridge in New Jersey at 8:30, and ride to the Kountry Kitchen in Elmer for brunch. Leader: Dave Trout, 610-368- 0760, dmtrout@usa.net.

Saturday, June 12 - Baltimore to York Railtrail. Class B, 80 miles round trip, flat, ATB or hybrid bike needed. Starts at 9 from the southern trailhead in Ashland, Md, on Md Route 145 about 1 mile east of Md 45, refer to Mapquest for directions. This is a former railroad line turned into a bike path. We will stop for food in several places on our route. Leaders: Doug Kennedy, 610- 543-5664, dougkennedy7@yahoo.ca, and Debbie Wilson, 302-798-1243, djwbike2000@yahoo.com.

Saturday, June 12 - Southern Camden County. Class C+/C, 13-16 mph, 30 miles. Starts from Berlin Park in Berlin, NJ, just off the White Horse Pike across from the Berlin Farmers Market. A map and directions to the starting location are at http://home.comcast.net/~dwender1/Berlin%20Rides.htm. We'll start at 9. Rain cancels. Leader: Dave Wender, 856-809-9194, dwender1@comcast.net.

Sunday, June 13 - The Dark Side of the Hawk. Class B, 75 miles at 15 mph avg, moderately hilly with a few tough climbs and incredible long descents. First we'll head towards the Blue Mountain ridge going through New Tripoli, and after reaching the top on Route 309, a screaming descent will take us to a sparsely settled little valley that crosses the watershed from the Lehigh River to the Schuylkill River. Convenience store stops at mile 25 (very quick) and mile 45 in Orwigsburg (moderately quick). Then we glide down Pheasant Run to Hawk Mountain, a private preserve set up years ago to protect migrating hawks from being shot by hunters. We'll climb the challenging northern side of the mountain (the dark one!!) to start the winding run back to Trexlertown (with another exhilarating long descent, of course). Starts at 8 from the Trexlertown velodrome. I-476 North to Allentown exit. SR 22 west to exit 14. Follow SR 100 south for about 2 miles and turn right onto US 222 west, then 2nd right onto Moser Rd, turn left into velodrome parking lot, near the port-a-potty. Call if weather is questionable. Email if you want a cue sheet. Leader: Eduardo Ruchelli, 215-572-0753, edr@mail.med.upenn.edu.

Sunday, June 13 - Almost All the Way to Alloway. Class B, 16-18 mph, 62 +/- miles. The ride from Voorhees spent too much time on C.C. roads, so I moved the start to Blackwood and pushed the loop further southeast, adding many extra miles of beautiful Salem County roads. Two rest stops, whether we need them or not, and since it is not a holiday maybe the cheese shop in Elmer will be open. Pace will be held, with plenty of extra-long breakaways for those that find cycling below 19 mph repugnant. Meet at Camden County College, the rear parking lot, behind the CIMM building, on Peter Cheeseman road across from the Y in Blackwood, NJ for an 8:00 start. Leader: Joe 'Parts' Barolin, 856-265-1051, joepartsb@yahoo.com.

Sunday, June 13 - Around Lake Nockamixon. Class B+, 16-17 mph, 60 miles. Start 8:30 at the Wachovia Bank on Main Street (Rt. 313) in Dublin, Pa. This ride circles around the north side of Lake Nockamixon before returning via the Quakertown and Sellersville areas, and features some challenging hills as well as lots of great scenery. Cue sheet will be provided. Rain cancels, call before 7:30 the morning of the ride if conditions are questionable. Call or e-mail if you have questions or need additional information. Leader: Chris Beetham, 215-740- 4637, ride_with_cb@verizon.net.

Sunday, June 13 - Exton to Valley Forge. Class C, 12-13 mph, 28 miles. This ride will meander along lightly used roads from just east of Route 100 in Exton up to Valley Forge Park, then return along Yellow Springs Road(s). We will be tackling several moderate hills which keeps this a shorter ride. No one will be dropped. Bring water and snacks. No food/bathroom breaks are planned. Meet at the Rhondda Neighborhood Offices (The Farmhouse) on Carmarthen Drive for a 9:00 start. Call or email for directions. Joint ride, with DVBC and BBC. Leader: Matt Rice, 610-280-6195, mrice@dca.net.

Sunday, June 13 - Wissahickon Trail. Class D, about 25 miles. Start at the top of Forbidden Drive at Northwestern Ave for a trip to the Art Museum. The return trip will be a little hilly but that's always part of the fun. Departure time is 9:00, so an early arrival is suggested. If this is your first time down Forbidden Drive, I guarantee it won't be your last. Wide tires a must. Bring money, food, and water. Leader: Len Langsdorf, 610- 278-7779 home, 215-826-6998 work.

Sunday, June 13 - B Ramble. Class B, 14-15 mph for about 45 miles. Lunch stop at Whole Foods Market in Devon. Cue sheets provided. Meet at the Italian Fountain at noon. Leader: Jeff Bakely, 215-843-1093, jbakely@verizon.net.

Saturday, June 19 - Ride the Boards at the Shore! Class C/D, 12- 13 mph on the road, 8-9 mph on the boardwalk, 30 miles. Ride the Atlantic City boardwalk and the island. For years I wanted to ride the boardwalk as I did as a youngster, and recently I did just that. It was a pleasant ride and so I am hosting a "Ride on the Boards" the third Saturday of every month through September. Starts at the parking lot on the boardwalk, just south of the Hilton Hotel, promptly at 7:45 because the boardwalk closes to bikes at 10. Take the AC Expressway to Exit 2, the last exit before entering AC, or take the Black Horse Pike all the way into AC. You will cross over a bridge (Intracoastal Waterway) and see "The Monument". Continue about 1/3 around the monument and you are on Pacific Ave. (first street from beach). Take the first parking lot (large) on your right. Parking is $7 or $10 for 12 hours. We will ride to the north end of the Boards, then backtrack to the southern end in Ventnor, then south onto Atlantic Ave to see Lucy the Elephant in Margate, and on to the Longport inlet to enjoy the ocean view on the jetty. Then it's inland to Somers Point for breakfast at Smittie's. Total ride time 4 hours. There are public facilities on the Boards. If you need transportation, I can take 3 riders. I will only ride if we have at least two other riders, so please contact me if interested. Rain cancels. Leader: Joseph Reganato Jr, 215-715- 9403, pr0230@yahoo.com.

Sunday, June 20 - Brandywine Spring Classic. Class B/B-, about 43 miles, 14 mph, a couple of good hills but hey, it is mid-June. Leave at 9:00 sharp. Recover from Saturday's Freedom Valley Ride at a modest pace and distance. Enjoy lush Brandywine Valley scenery and get back in time to enjoy the rest of the (almost) longest day of the year. Start is behind the Wawa in Chadds Ford, at the Rts 1 & 100. I-95 south to just past the Commodore Barry Bridge exits. Exit right onto Rt 322, proceed about 7 mi to Rt 1. Turn left to go south on Rt 1. The Wawa is about 3 mi on left. Left turn lane is just before Rt 1 crosses 100. Park in far side of lot away from Wawa & P.O. From 476 exit to Rt 1 south, crossing Rts 322 & 202. Follow above directions to the Wawa. Leader: Roger Burnham, 215-848-3545.

Sunday, June 20 - B Ramble: Fort Washington. Class B, 14-15 mph, 40 miles. Meet at the Italian Fountain at noon and we'll head out to Fort Washington. Break after the halfway point at the Quik Mart for a microwaved burrito and chocolate milk. Leader: Werner Carrieri, 215-680-2618, wernerman@aol.com.

Friday, June 25 - Carranza Night ATB Ride. Class B pace, 10-15 miles. Not for beginners, must have dependable lights designed for night riding - no flashlights taped to handlebars! Saturday, June 26 - Schwenksville. Class B-, 13-14 mph, about 55 miles. Rolling with some hills through eastern Montgomery County. Leader: Jeff Bakely, 215-843-1093, jbakely@verizon.net.

Saturday, June 26 - Cruise the Delaware Canal Towpath. Class C-, 8-10 mph, 35-40 miles. Meet at the Riverside picnic area of Washington Crossing State Park at 9:30. Bring the family or just yourself. We'll enjoy the spring flowers along the Delaware River and observe local wildlife fly and scamper by. Before departing to our cars we'll stop in New Hope at a delicious French bakery. Bring a hybrid or mountain bike as the trail is unpaved.
