Sundays
Sunday Morning Breakfast Ride. Class C, up to 35 miles. Bring locks. Meet 8:45, 22nd & Spring Garden for a delightful ride to a delightful place to have a delightful breakfast. Winter rides may be canceled if snow or ice are on the ground or if the temperature goes below 32. Leaders: March 4 - Peggy Gertz, gertz@email.chop.edu. Bulldog Ride. Class A-/B+, 45-65 miles, average speed 16-18 mph depending on the terrain. Meets most Sundays at the Bulldog statue, in the triangular park at 25th St, Fairmount & Pennsylvania Aves. Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride. Class D, usually 12- 22 miles. Meets every Sunday at noon in front of Lloyd Hall, #1 Boathouse Row, on Kelly Drive. For the beginner who wishes to improve her/his cycling skills, for those new to Philadelphia who want to explore the little-known, out-of-the-way places in the city and near suburbs. CALL TO CONFIRM. Sunny Sunday Spin-Off Ride. Class C, usually 25-30 miles. A true C ride which cheerfully waits to regroup. All welcome. Meets 12:15 at the rock near the Italian Fountain, behind the Art Museum. Dusk Into Darkness. Class B, 25-30 miles. Early season after work training ride. Assuming the roads are clear, we'll get a nice jump on the riding season by starting our training rides in March. We'll start out by watching the sunset over the flat south Jersey landscape and then ride under the starlit sky. Bring lights and wear reflective clothing. Call leader to confirm that the ride is going. Start 6:00 PM at Albert's Organics, Bridgeport, NJ. From Phila. take 95 South to Rt 322 East, over the Commodore Barry Bridge to NJ. Wallyball. March 9 and 23. Come to the Aquatic & Fitness Center at Riverside Racquet at 600 Righters Ferry Road in Bala Cynwyd at 7 pm for a fun and invigorating game of Wallyball. What is it? Volleyball in a racquetball court. We play until at least 9:00. Cost is $7.50 per person. Bring your own lock for a locker. Call the club at 610-664-6464 for directions. NEW POLICY!! Individual Rides
Saturday, March 3 - Plymouth Rock. Class B, 14-15 mph, 50 miles over flat to rolling terrain. Riders can use this route to begin regaining the condition and form which they may have lost over the winter. The ride features several long stints on relatively flat roads which will afford an opportunity to spin at a consistent cadence. The route includes about 10 miles of roads through Plymouth and Whitpain Townships which are new to my ride library. A cue sheet will be provided, although we will work together and re-group as needed to assure that no one is dropped. There will be a brief food/rest stop. Saturday, March 3 - Bike or Ski. Class C ride or Novice XC - Skiing in Valley Forge Park. If there is no snow, we will road bike the BicyclePA S Route from Betzwood to Pughtown (26 miles), St. Peters (34 miles) or Elverson (44 miles). All mileage is round trip. Meet in the lower parking lot at Valley Forge Visitor Center. You must call or e-mail for start time and equipment to bring. On other weekends, whenever there is more than one inch of snow covering frozen ground locally, call or e-mail me. An ad hoc trip will be announced at that time. Buckman Ski shops and REI rent cross country skis. SEPTA's R6 line stops in Norristown immediately adjacent to the bike path to V.F. Sunday, March 4 - Backwoods New Jersey. Class B, 44 miles, 15 mph. This is another winter ride led by Carlos Martin several years ago. It travels through some of the back roads in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It is a pretty and relatively easy ride. Leaves 9:00 from Washington's Crossing on the New Jersey side, by the river, Rts 29 and 546. We'll have lunch at the Ringoes Deli. From Center City, take I-95 to the first exit in N.J. Sunday, March 4 - Glenside Free Library. Class B, 40-45 miles, 14-15 mph. Exact route to be determined; most likely heading north in Montgomery County or west into Chester County, Leaves at 9:00 from the Glenside Free Library at Keswick Ave & Waverly Rd. Sunday, March 4 - Ride Captain, Ride. Class C+, 30 miles. Join BCP's Ride Captain on a trip through the Main Line. After a long absence, Howie is back! Guaranteed to be an interesting ride. Support your local Ride Captain - Show up and welcome him back! Cue sheets provided, probably a snack stop, no need for locks. Starts from the Italian Fountain at 9:30. Sunday, March 4 - Two Lakes. Class C, about 20 miles. Quick ride around Cooper River and Newton Lake. Stop for snack. Rain or temps below 40F cancels. Meet at 9:30 at Pennypack (now Mary Barnaby) Park. Take Rt 70 East; right on Rt 41 and immediately jog right onto Kings Hwy. One mile to Park Ave, right on Park to parking lot. Saturday, March 10 - Ft. Washington/Ambler. Class B+, approximately 43 miles, swinging through Chestnut Hill toward Ft Washington area. NO CUESHEET, so we will ride as a group. Saturday, March 10 - Ridley Creek to the Brandywine Valley. Class B, 15 mph, 45-50 miles. This is a hilly ride through the bucolic Ridley Creek State Park to the Brandywine Valley. One brief snack stop half way through the ride. Please check my voicemail if weather is questionable. Starts 10:00 at Rose Tree Park, on Rt 252 in Rose Tree/Media. Take your favorite highway to Rt 476, Exit 3, then Rt 1 South, get off onto Rt 252 (about 1 mile); turn right at the end of the exit ramp, and go through the first light. Sunday, March 11 - It's Wednesday on Sunday. Class B/B-, 12-15 mph, 33 miles, mostly rolling terrain with four hills. Are you missing those ever-popular Wednesday night rides from BikeWorks in Harleysville? Come with me as we retrace the extremely popular Wednesday night summer route. This is a great opportunity for some of the slower riders to experience the longer route. No rest stops or cue sheets will be provided. However, this will be a leisurely ride with the main focus on fitness and fun. We will regroup at the top of each hill and NO RIDERS WILL BE DROPPED. Rain, snow, or temperatures below 25 degrees at the start cancels. The ride leaves from Indian Valley BikeWorks (the corner of Maple Ave. & Route 63 in Harleysville, PA) at 9:00 sharp. Sunday, March 11 - Leprechaun Breakfast in Black Eddy. Class C, 38 miles. Ride up the Delaware River along the ridge line on the NJ side. Cross the Delaware River to the Upper Black Eddy Fire House for the annual Leprechaun AYCE Breakfast. Highlight of the ride out is Horseshoe Bend Rd, a 4KM descent from the ridge into Frenchtown. Hills on the outbound ride, flat stretches along both sides of the river on the return ride. Starts 9:30 from the Village Square Shopping Center parking lot on the corner of Main St (NJ Rt 29) & Cherry St on the north side of Lambertville, NJ. Cue sheets provided. All ride levels are welcome; no one dropped. The only requirement: Make it to the fire station before noon. AYCE Breakfast is just $5. SEPTA's R3 West Trenton station is closest rail connection. Sunday, March 11 - Valley Forge Jaunt with the Fun Wheelers. Class C, about 20 miles. Meet 10:00 at the Betzwood parking lot at the V.F. end of the bike path. Ride through the park and surrounding area in Chester County. Some hills. Frequent stops to regroup, no one dropped. Bring liquids and snacks. Sunday, March 11 - B Ramble: Blue Bell Classic. Class B, 14-15 mph, 50 miles over flat to rolling terrain. Tired of going to the same old 7/11 in Ambler? No problem, this ride will take us to the WaWa in Whitpain. How's that for diversity? We'll cover mostly rolling terrain, but will include a few ascents to keep the climbers in the group happy. Cue sheets will be provided, but this is the B Ramble, Bunky, so we'll stick together and make sure that no one gets dropped. Meet at the Italian Fountain for a prompt noon departure. Saturday, March 17. Bryn Mawr Local. B+/B pace. Spring is just around the corner. This ride will retrace the Thursday night route to get us ready for the summer training series. NO CUESHEET, we will use the regular regrouping spots, no one gets left behind. Approximately 32 miles with a short segue to Manor Rd if conditions permit. Bring snack bars. Saturday, March 17 - St. Patrick's Day Northeast Ramble. Class C, 30 miles. Celebrate the coming of spring with Madge and Dick Trickey on their leisurely paced ride in the Northeast, all west of the Delaware River. Lunch stop (Ham&Cabbage?); no cue sheets. Sunday, March 18. Quad County Metric Preview. Class B, about 40 miles, 14-15 mph average, hills. We'll ride the route intended for this spring's Quad County Metric 40-mile option to see if we can get the kinks out of it and look for potential trouble spots. We'll ride as a group and try to stay together. Bring appropriate food and drink for 40 miles, as I don't believe the route has many convenience stores. Thursday - Sunday, March 22 - 25 - Greenbrier Millennium Legacy Trail, Greenbrier, W VA. Three days of hiking and biking along the 77-mile trail along the rural Greenbrier River and Watoga State Park. 77 miles of hard-packed trail featuring 35 bridges, 2 tunnels, and the best pastoral and woodland scenery in the eastern United States. And LESS THAN 1 PERCENT GRADE along the entire trail. This is a privately arranged early season biking event. Lodging (3 nights) and transportation costs about $100, double occupancy. Saturday, March 24 - Octoraro Valley Tour. Class B, 52 miles, somewhat hilly in places. We will see plenty of woods and creeks on this scenic ride through rural Chester and Lancaster Counties. Starts 8:30 at Unionville Elementary School on PA Route 82, 2.7 miles north of US Route 1. There will be a brief stop at a fast food mart in Chatham, 7 miles out. Lunch will be at Cochranville, 40 miles out, your choice of a Mexican or Italian restaurant. Maps and/or cue sheets for the racers and the flower pickers. Saturday, March 24 - Towamencin Traverse. Class B, 14-15 mph, 50 miles over rolling terrain with several steady climbs. Like my prior ride earlier in the month, this route is designed to help riders build on the form they have been regaining in the early spring-and to have fun along the way! It features several steady climbs over relatively minor gradients, which will afford an opportunity to sit back in the saddle and spin uphill. We'll head out toward the "Big G" through Worcester and Skippack Townships and return through Towamencin and Whitemarsh Townships. A cue sheet will be provided, although we will work together and re- group as needed to assure that no one is dropped. There will be a brief food/rest stop. Sunday, March 25 - Return to Butter Valley. Class B/B, 12-15 mph, 42 miles? Maybe more, maybe less, mostly rolling terrain with some climbing. We'll explore some of the back country roads leading out to the Butter Valley Golf Course. The same rest stop made famous by Rick Liebert on those classic Saturday PBC rides. You won't want to miss this extremely scenic route with a combination golf course/airport as the rest stop. Watch golf balls take off down the first fairway while they parallel a Piper. Just remember to look both ways and up when entering the driveway! No cue sheets; we'll regroup at the top of each hill, NO RIDERS DROPPED. Sunday, March 25 - Fun Wheelers Tour the Brandywine. Class C, 28 miles. Ride along the picturesque Brandywine River and test yourself on Harmony Hill as the group winds its way up to the halfway stop at Highland Orchards. The Orchards is renowned for homemade apple cider doughnuts, fresh and warm from the griddle. Enjoy a few as a reward for having made it to the top. After that, its all downhill back to Chadds Ford. Starts 9:15 from Chadds Ford Elementary School parking lot, off Baltimore Pike (US 1 South) in Chadds Ford. Make a right turn at the first traffic light south of route 100. Sunday, March 25 - B Ramble: The Ride of Spring. Class B, 40-50 miles, 14-15 mph. Rich Wagner and Barbara Rosenberg will lead us to Media, Marple or Morton for a short sojourn and back to Merion for a soupcon of solstice sustenance. Riders are welcome to start and end the ride at Barbara's, as you may be too replete to remount thereafter. Park at Merion train station, leave Merion at 11:15, or meet us at the Italian Fountain at noon. Sunday, April 1 - Mansions of Fairmount Park. Class D, 12 miles. Ride to ten grand manses of Fairmount Park including Lemon Hill, Strawberry Mansion and Mount Pleasant. Cruise by the Japanese Tea House and the Horticultural Center. Cue sheets and historical info provided. Regroup as necessary. Bring snacks & liquids. Starts in front of Lloyd Hall, #1 Boathouse Row, on Kelly Drive at 9:15 DAYLIGHT TIME! Optional: Several mansions are available for interior tours. Admission $2.50. Sunday, April 1 - Pancake Flat Folly. Classes B, 62 miles, and C+, 43 miles. This is no April fool! So, come out to south Jersey for a flat ride from Bridgeport to Parvin State Park on the long route or to Elmer on the short route. There will be a lunch stop at the mid-point in both rides. Starts 10:00 EDT from Albert's Organics, Bridgeport, NJ. From Phila. take 95 South to Rt 322 East, over the Commodore Barry Bridge to NJ. Once in NJ, take the first exit onto Rt 130 South for about 1 mile. Take the first left onto High Hill Road. Albert's parking lot is on the left.
