Saturday, May 11 - The Oley Valley Ride. Class B, 15-16 mph, and B-, 13-14 mph, approx. 54-57 miles. This is a ride loved by many and feared by a few. It is a hilly ride that goes to the north of Reading, and then east through the beautiful Oley Valley. The ride is beautiful and I'm sure you will be glad you came. It has made many people happy, but I'm sure others were left with the desire to put a contract on me. Sunday, May 12 - Blue Mountain I: Delaware Gap. Class B, 75 miles with a few hills, 15 mph avg. This is the first of two tours across the Blue Mountain ridge during the month of May. The ride starts heading west along the south side of the ridge. We'll find the main climb of the ride when we cross the ridge at Little Gap (Blue Mountain Ski Resort). After a fast long descent we continue east, parallel to the north side of the ridge until we reach the Delaware Gap. No climb here, the Delaware took care of carving our passage back to the south side of the ridge a long time ago! This very scenic area makes the trip to the start worth it (a little bit over an hour from Plymouth Meeting). Bring snacks and water since we may not find any open store along the first 45 miles. Cue sheets available for slower and faster riders. From Plymouth Meeting: Route 476 North to Allentown exit; Route 22 East towards Bethlehem for 17 miles; Route 33 North for about 7 miles to Belfast exit. Saturday, May 25 - Pinnacle Century. Class B, 92 miles, about 14 mph. Leave 7:30 from the White Clay Preserve parking lot just west of the intersection of London Tract (Broad Run Rd.) and Good Hope Rd in Landenberg, Pa, for a hilly ride (with over 7200 feet of climbing) into the heart of Savage Country. The ride is actually only 92 miles but is hilly enough to qualify as a century. We will stop at the Bartville Store for a snack and then at the Pinnacle. Bring food if you want to eat at the Pinnacle, or we can make a deli stop in Tanglewood (after the Pinnacle) where you can buy a sandwich (ETA about 1 p.m. for the deli). We'll extend our recent rides out of Valley Forge, this time due west to have a leisurely lunch in St. Peter's Village, hopefully at the St. Peter Inn's outside terrace along beautiful French Creek. The ride is hilly, but very scenic and never disappointing. Sign-in is at 9:00 and we'll leave at 9:15 sharp from Valley Forge Park, lower parking lot near the Visitors Center. Get there early and join us for breakfast. This ride offers a good mix of a few challenging hills, several miles of rolling hills, and 12.5 miles of a flat bike path. In March we had a great ride to Valley Forge. This ride is very similar, but follows a little different path which has added a few more miles. Sunday, May 26 - Birch Bash. Class A, 15-16 mph, 75 miles. Meet 8:00 at Bruno's, Northwestern & Germantown Avenues in Chestnut Hill/Lafayette Hill, for this challenging and strenuous ride. We will head to Chester County passing a pet cemetery, climb Valley Forge Mountain, head towards Birchrunville via Yellow Springs Road, and in Birchrunville do our 2 big climbs of the day, first up Hilltop and then Sawmill Road. Each climb is over 1 mile long with steep sections of dirt. They definitely are passable on a road bike with high pressure tires but are challenging. We will head back toward Paoli and climb Union Hill and Valley Road, where we will have our first rest stop at mile 45. From there we head back to Philly via horse country. The plan is to wait at the top of the hills, but keep a steady clip on the flats. Bring plenty of food and drink as the rest stop is far into the ride. Please call to confirm. Sunday, May 26 - Blue Mountain II: Hawk Mt. Class B, 85 miles, 15 mph avg. Moderately hilly with a few tough climbs and incredible long descents. This is another gem of a ride put together by Peter Odell, which was slightly modified in order to start at Trexlertown. We'll ride the plateau over to Kistler Valley, climb Shochary Ridge, coast down to the Ontalaunee Valley into New Tripoli past the old Mennonite Cemetery and then climb the Blue Mountain ridge. We'll regroup at the bottom and ride west along Zionis Stone Church Road to Helca. This is a sparsely settled little valley that crosses the watershed from the Lehigh River to the Schuylkill River. Lunch is in Orwigsburg at mile 47. Then we glide down Pheasant Run to Hawk Mountain, a private preserve, set up years ago to protect migrating hawks from being shot by hunters. We'll climb the challenging western side of the mountain, and after swallowing our lungs back into our chests at the top, we'll enjoy the exhilarating long descent on the eastern side to start the winding run back to Trexlertown. Cue sheets available for slower and faster riders. Starts 8:30 from the Trexlertown velodrome. Directions: Route 476 North to Allentown exit. Rt 22 West to exit 14. Sunday, June 2 - Fiddler's Elbow. Class B, approx 75 miles at around 15 mph avg. Hilly. So, you think that New Jersey is flat? Come to see the hidden "Jersey Alps" along this very scenic route. Riding in New Jersey will never feel the same! This is the final test for those going on the Mt. Greylock tour; believe me, the climbs in Massachusetts will feel like molehills. But don't feel intimidated, nobody will be dropped (maybe I will?). The ride is mostly in Warren County, N.J., and upper Bucks County, Pa. Beautiful roads. Starts 8:30 from Nockamixon State Park, Haycock Boat Access parking lot on PA 563, 1 mile from PA 412.
