Sunday Morning Breakfast Ride. Class C, up to 30 miles. Meet 8:45 at the SE corner of 22nd & Spring Garden for a delightful ride to a delightful place to have a delightful breakfast. Bring locks and money for brunch in the middle of the ride. We always need volunteers to lead us to delightful eating spots and pretty biking areas. B Ramble. Class B, 14-15 MPH, approx. 40 miles. Meet at the Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum at noon. Check the Monthly Calendar for leaders, ride descriptions, and cancellations.

Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride. Class D, usually 12-25 miles. Meets at noon at the formal entrance to the azalea garden at the circle behind the Art Museum. For the beginner who wishes to improve his or her cycling skills and for those new to Philadelphia who want to explore the out-of-the- way places in the city and near suburbs. This month has only one Sunny Sunday Ride at the usual place and time (May 21) but several other D rides (see Monthly Listing for all details). Experienced riders: If you want to share your love of cycling with newcomers, volunteer to lead a D ride this year. Just one would make a difference! Contact John J. Mondays

Monday on the Main Line. Class B/B-, 13-15 MPH, 20-30 miles. Are you trapped on the Main Line? Was your weekend a washout? Then try this new Monday evening ride leaving at 6:30 PM from Church of the Saviour ("COS") parking lot in Wayne, Pa. COS is located at 651 N. Wayne Ave, between Eagle Rd and Upper Gulph Rd, 5 minutes off the St. Davids/Villanova exit of Rt. 476. Big parking lot and water/bathrooms. We'll ride in Montco, Delco and Chesco. Tuesdays

Narberth ChainSmokers. Class B, 14-15 MPH, 30-35 miles. Leaves at 6 from Mainly Bikes, 229 Haverford Ave in Narberth. Training ride through the back roads of the Main Line. As the days get longer, we go out to Valley Forge before returning. Evening Ride from Mt. Airy. Class B-, 13-14 MPH. 25 to 32 miles, depending on the amount of daylight. Ride starts promptly at 6 PM. Meet at the Allen's Lane Train Station at the corner of Allen's Lane and Cresheim Road. Leader: Jeff Bakely, 215-843-1093, jbakely@verizon.net.

Vocabulary Ride. Class C/C-, 11-13 MPH, 10-15 miles. We take the Word of the Week for a spin through southern Delco. Beginners are welcome, but are asked to call at least a day ahead of the ride. MTB on the Pennypack Trails. Class B-/C+, approx 1.5 hours of riding. Starts from the Pine Road entrance to Pennypack Park at 6:30 PM. A trail permit is required. Trail permit applications can be downloaded at http://www.fairmountpark.org/pdf/Trail User Permit Application.pdf. I'll keep this ride going on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer when temperatures are not too hot. Ride is canceled if high temperatures for the day are above 85 degrees, rain is occurring, or trail conditions are poor. Call or e-mail to confirm that the ride is on or with questions. Wednesdays

Evening Ride from Glenside. Class B/B+, 16-17 mph, 25-30 miles. Meet at the Keswick Cycle Co, 408 N. Glenside Ave, near Keswick Ave & Easton Rd in Glenside, for a prompt 6:30 PM departure. Come explore the interesting and diverse roads of eastern Montgomery County! We'll ride until dark on routes that are moderately hilly and generally lightly traveled. There may be other paced rides available, or better yet, come by to lead a ride of your own! Contact Brian Hackford at the bike shop, 215-885-7433, with questions about other paced rides or parking. Training Ride. Class C+, approximately 26 miles. Departs 5:59 PM from Italian Fountain. We'll do the traditional "3 Hill Challenge" but with variations and some new scenery. Schuylkill River Trail. Classes B- (15-17 MPH) and C (12-14 MPH), 19-25+ miles - we'll adjust the pace and distance as the season progresses. Meet at 6:30 (or 5:55 for an easy 3-5 mile warm up). Starts at the Spring Mill train station parking lot near E. Hector St and E. North Lane in Conshohocken. From Ridge Ave, take Barren Hill Rd to first light, then left to the station. We'll ride towards Valley Forge and beyond, returning before darkness. No cars, hills or cue sheets. No one left behind. Bring money for pizza afterwards on the 2nd Thursday of the month (May 11). Blue Bell Special, Class C, up to 30 miles, 13-14 MPH average. The plan is to get a ride in before the traffic becomes unbearable, so an 8:30 AM departure is a must with a hoped-for return by 11. Meet at the Kohl's parking lot at routes 202 & 73, across the street from the Center Square Fire Company. Bring determination, coffee money, and H2O. We will regroup if necessary. Krank with Kolman. Class C, 30-40 miles, 12-14 MPH. Start at 9. Call first in case weather forces cancellation or a later start. Come on down and discover a new area to ride. This is wonderful, open flat to slightly rolling farm land. We will hold a C pace but faster riders are welcome and may ride off. Meet at baseball field parking lot, Sharp & Columbia Sts, Millville, NJ. From 55 S, take exit 27. Go south. Cross light. Bear right at the Y. Stay right at second Y. Go about 1 mile. Saturday, May 06 - Tempo Ride (Adhoc) Class B,B+, 16-17mph, 50 miles. Meet at 8:44 am at BACK of Art Museum. This is not the Italian Fountain. This is also called the West Entrance. This is the spot where cars can drive up to the rear entrance. This will be a steady output ride, using a double pace line. Ride will return by 1pm. One short break. Saturday, May 6 - C+ Training Ride - Ambler (Adhoc) Class C+, 13-14 mph, ~ 40 miles. This ride leaves from the Italian Fountain at 10am and heads to Ambler. We'll try to keep a steady pace and effort (rolling speed ~ 15 mph) and work some riding skills when road conditions allow it. I know, it's early in the season. Sunday, May 7 - Hill Ride Challenge! Class B+, pace 6-16 MPH, 55 miles. B+ because of the terrain, 16 MPH max on flat roads (we work on the hills). Ride starts at 8:30 from the Tree Farm Village on Route 31 in Pennington, N.J. Tree Farm Village is located on the southbound side of Route 31 about 3.4 miles north of Route 95. The ride initiates a series of challenging routes building up to 65 miles by the end of the summer. We will ride to the bird watching platform in Fort Washington State Park, with a food/fuel stop at either Wawa (approx 13.5 miles) or Bruno's (approx 23 miles). Meet at the Italian Fountain at Noon. Sunday, May 7 - Tour of Delaware and Chester Counties (Adhoc) Class B, 14 -15 mph, 70 miles. This ride will cover the classic routes of western Delaware and Chester Counties, on the way to Delaware (state). Plenty of pretty scenery with hills, farms and creeks. Bailout points will be provided. We'll share the ride with riders from another club. The ride will leave from Ardmore by 8:40 am, in front of McDonald's. McDonald's is located on Lancaster Ave at Ardmore Ave, across the street from I-HOP.. Saturday, May 13 - Loop The Airport! Class C+, 12-14 MPH, ~32 miles, 8:30 departure. Meet at the Folsom Pathmark on MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township. From Pathmark we'll bike by the historic Leiper House, loop the airport, and swing by Fort Mifflin. We should return around noon. While the ride will keep a steady pace, the terrain is almost totally flat (only one real hill). There will be a few stops as we watch the planes land and briefly check out the historic sites. Saturday, May 13 - Doylestown. Class B-, 13-14 MPH, 50+/- miles. Meet at 8:45 at Bruno's, the corner of Northwestern and Germantown Aves. Terrain is rolling with a couple of short, steep climbs to get up to Lake Galena. Brief rest stop at 25 miles overlooking the lake. Saturday, May 13 - Bucks County Pa. to Hunterdon County N.J. Class B, 15-16 MPH, approx. 68 miles. The ride leaves at 9 from the Bowman's Hill Wild Flower Preserve on Rt 32, 2 miles south of New Hope. We will ride through Mercer and Hunterdon Counties in N.J. then return via central Bucks. Saturday, May 13 - Thorndale to Unionville (Adhoc) Class B, 14 -15 mph, 60-70 miles. This is a ride we have never done before. It takes us due south, from Thorndale, through the King Ranch. The map says we will follow Broad Run Creek to Unionville in Chester County., making this a flat ride. We'll eat lunch in Unionville. Our return route will probably pass through Chadds Ford. The rain date is Sunday, May 14. The ride leaves Ardmore at 9:00 am., the meeting spot is McDonald's in Ardmore, located on Lancaster Avenue at Ardmore Avenue. I-HOP is across the street. Ardmore is about eight miles west of Center City. If you arrive late, look for a Q sheet tied to the bench. Sunday, May 14 - TerreHolland. Class B, 14-15 MPH, 62 miles. Ride kicks off at 9:15 from Warwick County Park. Directions from Philadelphia: I-76 W to S.R. 100 N to S.R. 23 W. Look for the brown sign for Warwick County Park and turn left onto County Park Rd. If you pass St Peter's Rd. you have gone too far. After the Quad Counties Metric we should be in shape for this Eduardo-created route into scenic Lancaster County. Rolling terrain with a few good climbs before and after lunch in New Holland, Pa. Our return will take us past Maple Grove Dragway and through French Creek State Park. A second stop may be added if conditions warrant. Cue sheets provided for those who want to set their own pace. Wednesday, May 17 - Chesterbrook Ramble. Class D, approximately 20 miles with a 10 MPH average speed depending on the group. Leaves at 11 from Manhattan Bagel in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center, easily accessed from US 202 or Pa. 252. Arrive early if you want to buy brunch. A multi-club relaxed ride -- flat but perhaps a few hills if the group is willing. We stop to regroup as required. No one left behind - NO cue sheets. Bring snacks, liquids and money. Saturday, May 20 - Rosenberger's Dairy Wagon, Hatfield. Class B-, 13- 15 MPH, 45-50 miles. Meet at 9 at Bruno's, Northwestern & Germantown Aves. We'll stop for ice cream, snacks, etc. Seems like this was a club favorite before I was a member and hasn't been listed for a few years. Sunday, May 21 - Port Providence Lock 60 Tour and Bird Hike. Class C, ~11 MPH, ~ 35 miles. Starts at 9 from the Valley Forge National Historic Park Visitor's Center, lower parking lot. This ride will take us along some well traveled biking roads in western Montgomery County. We eventually wind up at the Oaks Reach of the historic Schuylkill Canal for a lunch stop at the Fitzwater Station on the banks of the canal in Port Providence. For those wishing to do so, we bike a short distance to tour the restored Lock Tender's House. Birding will include a non strenuous hour-long hike along the east bank river and ravine trails. For the grand finale we will view the lock opening at 3 PM. The return is a short and easy route. For more info about the Lock, visit http://www.schuylkillcanal.com/. Expect a few hills. Sunday, May 21 - Blue Bell Special, Part 2. Class C, 13-14 MPH average, 30 +/- miles. Destination Harleysville with a little coffee stop in Skippack. The only notable thing I can say about this ride is we will stop to see cows and eat ice cream. We will leave for this exciting adventure at 9:30 from the Kohl's parking lot at routes 202 & 73, the parking area across the street from the Center Square Fire Company on Rt. 73. Sunday, May 21 - The One and Only May 2006 Sunny Sunday D Ride. 16 miles. Meets at noon at the formal entrance to the Azalea Garden at the circle behind the Art Museum. We will ride through Fairmount Park to the Design Center at Philadelphia University to view the exhibition "The Graphic Imperative: International Posters for Peace, Social Justice and the Environment, 1965-2005". Saturday, May 27 - Sex on the Beach! Class B, 16-17 MPH, 68 flat miles. Start time will be 9:30 at the Maurice Twp. Elementary School in Pt. Elizabeth, N.J. Directions to the start: Take Walt Whitman Bridge (or B. Franklin Bridge and I-676 S) to S.R. 42 S, then S.R. 55 S until the highway ends. Then take S.R. 47 S for a few miles, school parking lot is on the left shortly after the volunteer fire station. If your reach S.R. 347 you have gone too far. Travel time to the start is about 1-1/4 hours from Center City, but the ride is worth every minute. You may remember this Peter Odell gem from 1997. Our first stop will be East Point Lighthouse to observe the mating ritual of the prehistoric horseshoe crab. From there we travel more deserted roads to Fortescue on the Delaware Bay for lunch. Our final 20 miles includes a tour around Mauricetown with its sea captains' houses dating back to the early 1800s. Safe cycling is a must, so bring your helmet. I will have a limited supply of the other type of "protection" in case the crabs make some of you randy. Cue sheets provided for those who want to set their own pace. Saturday, May 27. Sex on the Beach! Class D. A reduced speed (10 MPH), lower mileage (20+ miles) version of the B ride by the same name. Ride commences at 10 and includes a visit to the East Point Lighthouse to observe the mating ritual of the prehistoric horseshoe crab as well as what might have been an old railroad grade that served the one hefty oyster business in the area. We will stop to regroup as required. No one left behind. Travel time from Center City to the start is approximately one hour. Bring snacks and liquid. Leader: John J. Kalicki. Sunday, May 28 - Glenside-Paoli Express. Class B+, 16-17 MPH, 60-65 miles. Start at 8 from Glenside Library at Keswick Ave and Waverly Rd in Glenside, Pa. Let's go on one of my favorite hilly routes from Glenside, heading west toward Paoli and Valley Forge Park. The featured climb on this ride is Diamond Rock Road, located just west of Valley Forge. Monday, May 29 - Memorial Day Mix 'n Match. Class B/C+, 13-16 MPH, 40 miles. We start from Narberth Park (by the basketball courts) in Narberth, Pa. at 10 sharp. This is an opportunity to show off your most interesting (ugliest?) jersey/gloves/sox etc. Do you have a pair of gloves or socks that have been orphaned by the laundry gremlin? This is a chance to wear that lonely critter(s). Prizes will be awarded to the best of the worst. Oh, the ride; We will travel the hilly back roads of the Main Line through Wayne to Valley Forge, stop for food, and then return to Narberth via more Main Line hills. Bring cash for one food stop. Saturday, June 3 - Mt. Gretna. Class B, 15 MPH, 74 miles. 9 o'clock start from the Shady Maple Market in Blue Ball, Lancaster County. From Center City: I-76W/PA Turnpike to Morgantown Exit; S.R. 10 South to S.R. 23 West. Stay on 23 W as 10 S breaks off; the Shady Maple Market will be on the left, shortly after S.R. 897 joins S.R. 23. If you reach 322 S you have gone too far. Please park in the back, right portion of the lot. Driving time from Center City to start is approximately 1 hr. Our annual pilgrimage to Mt. Gretna, with its houses that appear to have sprung from the pages of a fairy tale. We start at the Shady Maple Market and roll through Amish country before entering the more wooded Lebanon County. We'll dine al fresco at the historic Jigger Shoppe in Mt. Gretna. After an optional tour of the town we head back over the "mountain" and finish the ride through more of Lancaster County's fertile farm land. Eduardo amended the original route several years back to take out some of the climbing, so the route is mostly rolling, but expect some hillier sections. Cue sheets will be provided, and a second stop is possible if conditions warrant. Call for a go/no-go message the night before if the weather is questionable.
