BCP Ride List for October 2002

HELMETS are REQUIRED ON ALL RIDES

Last Minute Adhoc/Add-on rides now included in this listing
Adhoc rides are last minute weekend rides appearing on this web page as late as 9PM each Friday evening.

Saturday, October 5 - Bruno's to Lake Galena. Class B+, 16 - 17 mph, 53 miles. Meet at Bruno's at 7:45 for a PROMPT 8:00 start. We'll travel out to Lake Galena and if time permits, we'll stop by the shrine of the Black Madonna - Our Lady of Czestochowa; so brush up on your Catholic trivia! I'll try to find a WaWa around the 1/2-way mark for one quick stop; so bring food and water! We will keep the advertised pace with minimal stopping to stay warm. Leader: Sally Poliwoda, 215-753-2468, poliwoda@email.chop.edu.

Saturday, October 5 - Cheltenham to Plymouth Meeting for Lunch. Class C, 12-13 mph, 40 miles. Starts 10:00 from Tookany Park in East Cheltenham. Parking is on the west side of Tookany Parkway north of Central Ave. This ride stays in Montgomery County, while cruising through Glenside, Oreland, Erdenheim, Conshohocken, and the completed section of the Conshohocken to Ft Washington bike path to the Plymouth Meeting Shopping Center, on Chemical Road, for lunch at the Cracker Barrel. Bring $ and a lock. Leader: Bill Cotton, 215-559-2910 (cell), 215-663-8364 (home), billcotton@comcast.net.

Sunday, October 6 - Foliage Tour I: The Dark Side of the Hawk. Class B, 85 miles at around 15 mph avg. Moderately hilly with a few tough climbs and incredible long descents. During the month of October, I'll do 4 tours in different parts of southeastern PA to enjoy the beauty of the fall season in a variety of landscapes. In the first tour, we'll follow the beautiful route over the Blue Mountain ridge that Peter Odell put together some years ago. We've done this ride many times and everybody has always enjoyed it very much in all seasons. The route is entirely different than the one that climbs Hawk Mt along its southern side, next week. First, we'll head towards the Blue Mountain ridge going through New Tripoli, and after reaching the top on route 309, a screaming descent will take us to a sparsely settled little valley that crosses the watershed from the Lehigh River to the Schuylkill River. Lunch is in Orwigsburg at mile 45. Then we glide down Pheasant Run to Hawk Mountain, a private preserve set up years ago to protect migrating hawks from being shot by hunters. We'll climb the challenging northern side of the mountain (the dark one!!) to start the winding run back to Trexlertown (with another exhilarating long descent, of course). Starts 9:00 from the Trexlertown velodrome. I-476 North to Allentown exit. Rt 22 West to exit 14. Follow Rt 100 south for about 2.0 miles and turn right onto Rt 222 West, then 2nd right onto Moser Rd, turn left into velodrome parking lot, near the port-a-potty (I hope it's still there!). Call if weather is questionable. Leader: Eduardo Ruchelli, 215-572-0753, edr@mail.med.upenn.edu.

Sunday, October 6 - Conshohocken Local. Class D, 18 miles. Meets 9:00 in the parking lot of the SEPTA R6 Conshohocken Rail Station at Harry & Washington Sts, under the Fayette St bridge. Ride to Betzwood with the Fun Wheelers. Option to cross the river and tour Valley Forge Park before returning on the Schuylkill River Trail. Stops to regroup as necessary. All ride together. Food and cold drinks available at the Outbound Station adjacent to the trail. There will be a short session on bike maintenance and adjustments before the ride. Leader: Jim Connor, 215-668-1840.

Sunday, October 6 - B Ramble. Class B, 14-15 mph, 45 miles. Ambler Rambler will be mostly gently rolling hills with a few climbs. There will be a WAWA-type food break at about mile 25. Meet at the Italian Fountain at 11:45 for a noon start. Leader: Steven Lipschutz, 610 660 6295, steven.lipschutz@comcast.net.

Tuesday, October 8 - Executive Committee Meeting. 6:30 pm at the Manayunk Brewery & Restaurant, 4120 Main Street, Philadelphia. All members are encouraged to attend. For more details, or to get something on this month's agenda, contact David Johnson, 610-828-3708, david.johnson@lehigh.edu.

Saturday, October 12 - Foliage Tour II: Terre Holland. Class B. Approximately 60 miles at 15 mph avg, rolling to hilly. The hills around French Creek State Park should be magnificent at this time of the year. Add to that a trip to Lancaster county and you get quite a nice tour. Starts at 9:00 from Warwick County Park. PA Turnpike to Exit 23; Route 100 North; left on Route 23 West for about 3 miles; left on Park Road, then left into park (last time it was unmarked, so it's easy to miss. If you go as far as St. Peter's Rd, you just missed it). Call if weather is questionable. Leader: Eduardo Ruchelli, 215-572-0753, edr@mail.med.upenn.edu.

Saturday, October 12 - Hawk Mountain after the Swap Meet. Class B and C+, 15-16 and 14 mph, 60 miles. After replenishing our equipment with treasures we find at the Trexlertown swap meet, which starts at 9, we'll head out to explore the fall colors and bucolic back roads leading up to Hawk Mountain. Those who enjoy the challenge can climb the mountain, then come back down (much, much faster) to meet up with the rest of the group. Meet fed and hydrated outside the velodrome track entrance. C+ group leaves at 11, B group starts chasing after them at noon. Note: The swap meet now has a rain date set for Sunday, October 13. Nothing is sacred any longer; used to be, they were rain or shine. So, we will also have a rain date on Sunday, 10/13. Leaders: B - David Johnson, 610-828-3708, david.johnson@lehigh.edu. C+ - Ann Martha, 215-548-8482, amartha@phila.k12.pa.us, and Steve Trobovic, 610-687-9229, srtrobovic@juno.com.
