Leaving from behind the Chadd's Ford Wawa at 8, we'll ride up the Brandywine River Valley and into the Pa Dutch country in Lancaster County to our lunch in New Holland, also stopping in Glenmoore and Cochranville. Travel through 5 townships and 4 different towns. Suburban Levittown to historic Bristol with a stop at the summer home of the guy standing on top of City Hall, Billy Penn! Sunday, September 12 - Scenic Schuylkill Century. All classes, 25, 38, 62, and 100 miles. BCP's major annual event and one of the largest organized cycling events in the Delaware Valley. Sunday, September 19 - The Long (Poker) Ride. Class B+, 63 miles, 16- 17 mph. Starts at 8:30 from Wissahickon High School at Houston and Dager Rds in Ambler. Ride was rained out last month, so we'll give it another shot this month. If you like hills, this is for you. Please note that we will stick to the advertised pace. There will be a short food stop. Sunday, September 19 - Thornbury Ramble. Class C+, about 45 miles. Starts from Manhattan Bagel in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center at 8:30. A HILLY (strenuous) ride though Chester County, part of Ridley Creek State Park and Delaware County. Brunch at Pepper Mill. Joint ride with other clubs. Not a ride for beginners, but we stop to regroup as required. No one left behind - cue sheets provided. Bring snacks, liquids and money. Friday, September 24 - Carranza Night ATB Ride. Class B pace, 10-15 miles. My summer series of nighttime ATB rides were so successful, I said what the heck, I'd keep trying through the fall! The fall-winter ATB season is looming, so we will inventory the effects on the trails from a summer of unimpeded growth of the flora and fauna. Please RSVP for this event. Saturday September 25 - Conshohocken-Perkiomen Meet-the-Train Ride. Class C+, 50-55 miles from Conshohocken out the Valley Forge and Perkiomen Trails. We'll have lunch around midway, then return to Conshohocken. Meet at 8:55 at the Outbound Station, Stoddard Ave & Harry St, a couple blocks from the Conshohocken SEPTA station, right on the Valley Forge Trail. There is a parking lot off Stoddard St. Shortly after the R6 train (# 4602) from Center City has arrived, we will depart (est. 9:10). Portions of the Perkiomen are packed gravel, but thin tires can negotiate it; a hybrid bike is ideal for this ride. Bring money for lunch. We should return to Conshohocken around 3:00. Sunday, September 26 - A Labor of Love +20 Days! Class B, 16-18 mph, 70 +\- miles. What better way to end the road cycling season - Joe Parts' Holiday Rides 20 days removed! I had the gall to plan a vacation over the Labor Day weekend. Result: no Holiday Ride! In keeping with my "miles back" guarantee, a belated Holiday Ride! Pace may vary depending on prevailing conditions, winds, heat, Joe's quads, etc, with an exceptional number of long breakaways! Sunday, September 26 - Black River Century. Class B, 97 miles at 15 mph avg, hilly in the middle 1/3 of the route. We'll ride through some of the nicest sections of northern Hunterdon County, N.J. (Tewksbury Township between Pottersville and Califon). This area is full of ravines with beautiful creeks and lush vegetation along wonderful roads. Although you should expect to climb in this area, the ride starts along relatively flat roads in the farmlands of west and east Amwell Townships and returns along the flat plateau around Locktown. One quick snack/water stop in Pottersville at mile 34 and lunch stop at the Oldwick General Store at mile 60. Starts 8:00 sharp from the Village Square shopping center, Rt 29 & Cherry St (near US 202) in Lambertville, NJ. I-95 to Trenton, first exit in NJ after the bridge, follow SR 29 north for 10 miles to Lambertville. Shopping center (sign for CVS) is on your left after going through town, before US 202. Bulldog Ride. Sept. 26 ONLY. For strong B riders. 50-60 miles. One short rest stop at a Wawa type store. The main difference between this ride and the B ramble is that it is longer and the rest stop is shorter (it is not lunch!) We will go to Paoli or Doylestown as the group wishes. No cue sheet, so everyone sticks together and the leader can't be dropped. Meets at the Bulldog statue at 25th St & Pennsylvania Ave, we leave at noon sharp. Leader: Bruce Taubman, 215- 725-7935. Pennypack Park. Class C, 12-13 mph, 17 miles. Departure time is usually noon and the ride usually leaves from the city's far northeast section and heads downstream toward the Delaware River by way of Pennypack Park's paved road--but check with the leader for cancellations and variations in start time and location. Usual departure location: Pollok Elementary School on Welsh Road (across from Tolbut St.) lower parking lot. Sunny Sunday Afternoon Ride. Class D, usually 12-25 miles. This ride is for the beginner who wishes to improve his or her cycling skills and for those new to Philadelphia who want to explore the out-of-the- way places in the city and near suburbs. Narberth ChainSmokers. Class B, 15-16 mph, 33-35 miles. Our 2004 training rides through the back roads of the Mainline go to Valley Forge before returning. Schuylkill Trail. Class C+, 25+ miles. Meet at the Spring Mill parking lot of the Schuylkill Trail at 6:30 PM. Riding towards Valley Forge and beyond, this will be a chance to keep the legs in shape and get in some after-work miles without having to dodge potholes and cars. As the season progresses, the pace will be adjusted as we get in better shape, but feel free to break away and stretch your legs at any time. Marlton. Class B, 15-17 mph, 20-25 miles. Come for a beautiful ride thru Marlton, Medford, & Shamong. We'll start in Marlton at the Kings Grant Development, progress thru Medford, and then into Shamong and back. If there's any interest, we can do one or two fast 3 mile loops around Kings Grant at the end of the ride. Meet at Kings Grant shopping center (2nd entrance), make right on Merchants Way. Glenside. Class B/B+, 16-17 mph, approximately 30 miles. Come explore the interesting and diverse roads of eastern Montgomery County! We'll ride until dark on routes that are moderately hilly and generally lightly traveled. Meet at Keswick Cycles on Easton Road just North of Keswick Ave in Glenside, for a prompt 6:30 PM departure. Mountain Bike Ride in Wissahickon Park. Class B or C, approx 6-12 miles. We meet at the parking lot just west of the Valley Green Inn at 5:45 and leave by 6 PM. We usually have 2 rides: intermediate and advanced. Note that we bike the trails, not Forbidden Drive. Helmets are mandatory. Rain cancels. You should get a Wissahickon Park permit - cost is as little as $10 (the fee is really an annual contribution to the Fairmount Park). Freaky Friday Ride. Sept. 24 ONLY. Class B, 40 miles. Meet at 9:00 at Laurel Acres Park in Mt Laurel, NJ. Rt 38 to South Church St, south on S. Church St approximately 2 miles to park entrance on left. One food/restroom stop. Practice paceline riding on quiet, flat S. Jersey roads. Wallyball. Sept 10 & 24. Come to the Aquatic & Fitness Center at Riverside Racquet at 600 Righters Ferry Road in Bala Cynwyd at 7 PM for a fun and invigorating game of Wallyball. What is that, you ask? Good question - it's volleyball in a racquetball court. We play until at least 9:00. Cost is $7.50 per person. Bring your own lock for a locker. Krank with Kolman. Class C, 30-40 miles, 12-14 mph. This is wonderful, open flat to slightly rolling farm land. Come on down and discover a new area to ride. MTB Belmont Plateau. Class C/D. We'll meet 10:00 at the Italian Fountain for a 3-hour ride. The trails are crushed rock, dirt and maybe a creek crossing, wide fire roads and twisty singletrack and a few climbs for spice! A MTB or cyclo-cross or hybrid bike will work; you should have a permit, see BCP website for link. Use bug repellent like OFF! or anything with DEET.
