VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – LOW PAY, HIGH SATISFACTION

Want to help out? This event runs on "people power" and it requires the effort of many folks to make it
a success. You can even volunteer and get to ride. There are many tasks that occur prior to the day of
the ride (such as road markings and baking) and some early in the day of the ride (registration and
breakfast) that leave plenty of time to go on the ride. With our change in routes (three circular
routes, from rest stop to rest stop) you can even do a shift at a rest stop and have time to cycle a
portion of the ride, complete with rest stops and SAG support.
As always, volunteers will receive this year’s gifts (a really great cycling bag), free entry to
the SSC, an invitation to the volunteer party on Friday, Sept. 11 and a great deal of satisfaction.
If you are volunteering and plan on riding the SSC, please
click here to register for free.
We obviously have a fantastic group of volunteers. A whopping 97% who took our post-ride survey said
they were EXTREMELY OR VERY satisfied with our volunteers. Some of our favorite quotes include:
Please read the various volunteer descriptions that follow, and then email the appropriate contact person(s)
for the opportunity you are interesting in.
Baking
Providing fresh, delicious, homemade baked goods at our rest stops is one of our hallmarks. We ask each
baker to provide baked goods to feed 5 dozen riders or more.
Please contact Faith Goldstein at
Bike Shops
Supplying bike shops with our event literature is a great way to get the word out. Perhaps you have a
local bike shop that you would like to help supply.
Please contact Howard Hochheiser at
Breakfast
Another one of our hallmarks is breakfast prior to the ride – we help fuel riders by providing bagels,
bananas, Philly soft pretzels, yogurt, juice and coffee.
Please contact Howie "foodman" Wiener at
Database
Sheldon Isaac is our database guru. Sheldon keeps track of our registration database and takes care of our PayPal registration process. Further assistance is not currently needed.
Food Stops
We have three food stops: Cedar Grove Park in Lafayette Hill (all routes, out and back), Evansburg State Park
(Metric and Full Century, out and back), and the Upper Frederick Township Pavillion (Full Century). Each stop
features home baked goodies, sandwiches, cold drinks and other energy boosting snacks.
Please contact either Barbara Rosenberg at or

Pizza Bash
Yet another hallmark of our ride. We traditionally have a pizza party at the finish.

Publicity
Distributing our event literature at other club’s events is a great way of getting the word out. If you have
an event that you are going to and have some time to hand out literature, please let us know and we’ll see if
we already have the event covered.
If anyone has experience that would help us publicize the event through print or other mass media, we can
certainly use your expertise.

Registration
Volunteers are needed to check-in pre-registered and non-pre-registered riders, and give out wrist bands
and gifts. Registration opens at 6:45. A few people will be needed to help set up starting at
6:15 AM. Others might report closer 6:30. Anyone who wants to ride the SSC should be free to leave when
things wrap up, which is usually around 8:30.
Please contact either Cathy Flynn at or
Pat Haggar at
Route Marking
We mark the route within a few weeks of the event using spray paint and stencils. We try to mark place
markings before and after turns, and in areas where riders may be uncertain where to go. This is usually
done in teams of two who are responsible for 5 mile segments.
Please contact Dave Finger at
SAG
We provide SAG support (support and gear) for riders who are either unable to complete the event or are
having mechanical problems. Mechanical expertise is not required (but welcome) as we will bring people
and their bikes to the closest Rest Stop that will have mechanics. SAG drivers will receive a stipend to
help defray their gas costs.
Please contact Joe Feeney at
Signs
Jeff Kimmel is our premier sign maker. Jeff creates the signs used on the routes and the stencils used for marking the routes. Further assistance is not currently needed.
Transportation
Rich Wagner is our truck driver this year. Rich will pickup and deliver supplies, the night before
and day of the Century. Further assistance is not currently needed.
Volunteer Coordination
Howard Hochheiser is helping coordinate this year’s volunteers by keeping lists, checking them twice
and forwarding names and leads to the various coordinators. Further assistance is not currently needed.
Please contact Howard Hochheiser at
Volunteer Party
What’s an event without a party? We traditionally have a party the night before the event, and this year
will be no different (Sept. 11). We also use the party as an opportunity to collect and/or
distribute supplies.
Please contact Jennifer Payton at
Volunteer Ride
We’ve had volunteer rides in the past, typically the day before the event, but not recently
(partially because the event is now scheduled on a Saturday). We would welcome someone willing to
coordinate volunteer rides this year.
Rides could be whatever pace and distance a ride leader is willing to lead, based on the 4 routes we
offer (25, 40, 65 and 100 miles). It’s also possible to be a little creative by just riding one or two
of the circular routes from rest stop to rest stop - riding portion of the route but eliminating the
city part of the ride.
