Hike No, there will be ups and downs, 2.5 mph, 7 to 8 miles. Meet at Valley Green Inn. The hike leaves at 9:30 am. Diogenes was a Greek philosopher with many eccentricities, such as living rough in a discarded water barrel. (I guess they hadn't invented appliance boxes yet.) When visited by Alexander the Great, he scolded the emperor for standing so as to block his sunlight. Diogenes was an affirmed Cynic and had the habit of carrying a lantern at all hours of the day and night. "I am just looking for an honest man", he would say. Some may recall Sherlock Holmes brother, Mycroft, spent all his days at the Diogenes Club where he unofficially ran the British Government. Speaking in the lounge of the Club was strictly forbidden. So put on your hiking boots, grab your lantern and join us for a seven to eight mile search for an honest man in the Wissahickon Gorge. It's as good a place to look as any and at least we'll get some fresh air and exercise. Hope you can make it! The on-line route map is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diogenes.

Sat January 28, 2017 - Ride to the Pagoda

Level C+/B-, 13-14 mph, 36.8 miles. PA 724 at Water St, Birdsboro, PA. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. This ride starts in Birdsboro with a warmup climb, then meanders through the Oley Valley before the assault on Mt Penn, starting with a climb up Hartman Rd (heartless), before swinging around Antietam Lake and the long slog up Mt Penn to the pagoda. The pagoda isn't actually at the top of the hill, so after a brief stop at the pagoda, the climb up Mt Penn continues. It's mostly downhill from there back to Birdsboro. About 5 miles from the parking lot, there is an option for an additional 15 miles. If there is anonymous agreement, we'll do the additional 15 miles. In each of my rides on this route, there has never been anonymous agreement - even on solo rides. Will this time be the exception ? This is a very scenic ride on mostly quiet roads (we do have to navigate briefly through Reading), with lots of photo opportunities. There are meager snack options at the pagoda, and most of the convenience stores are at the beginning and end of the ride, so be prepared with enough water and fuel to be self-sufficient for the trip. Dress warmly - temps are only expected to reach the mid-30s, but will be lower for most of the ride. Parking is in a gravel parking lot at the intersection of PA-724 and Water St in Birdsboro. Short Route (36.8 miles)- https://ridewithgps.com/routes/2688598 Longer Route (51.1 miles) - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/11131906 Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is https://ridewithgps.com/routes/2688598.

Sun January 29, 2017 - Sunday Afternoon (Post-Hike) Winter Ramble - Bruno's to East Norriton

Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 35 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. FOR Jan. 29: Pretty meander from Bruno's to the Panera Bread Cafe in East Norriton. Outbound via LaFayette Hill and Plymouth Meeting, return via Blue Bell. Please click on the Route Map link below to preview the route and the elevation profile. GOOD NEWS: The earliest sunset of the year, which occurs before the Winter Solstice (Dec. 21), took place around Dec.13 - this is behind us by six weeks. Evening daylight is now gradually getting longer again! GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic, 30-35-ish mile loop, usually through Montgomery County or Lower Bucks, with a brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet most Sundays at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Instead of Bruno's, we may on occasion meet at another location in Chestnut Hill. Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this afternoon ride! We will stop to regroup if needed, but try as much as possible to maintain 13-15mph, due to short daylight. Plan is to return before 5:00pm. Please bring lights, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT Feb. 26. (Leader will be away). This ride will resume on the first Sunday of March. If winter weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a snow activity, e.g., cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. As long as we keep moving throughout the winter, we will maintain our base fitness level for the return of spring cycling in March. Cue sheets will be available.
