JULY, 2010 WEEKLY RIDES & GENERAL RIDE DESCRIPTIONS

BCP offers regular weekly rides. Below is a general description of the weekly rides, with pace, mileage, starting time, location, and leader or coordinator. The weekly rides are also listed by date in the Monthly Ride Calendar which you should check for specific ride leaders and any additional information on the ride. Information about starting locations is available on our Ride Guide page which is found under the rides menu item.

Sundays

Northwest Philly Rides. C to B paces. We offer a variety of scenic rides into surrounding counties, often with a sit down food stop. Rides start at either Ft. Washington State Park Flourtown Picnic Area on W. Mill Rd., between Stenton Ave. and Bethlehem Pike (from the Chestnut Hill direction: 1st right on Stenton after Northwestern Ave., or from Bethlehem Pike left just after Acme) or Upper Dublin High School in Ft. Washington (corner of Ft. Washington Ave. and Loch Alsh). Check Monthly Ride Calendar for start locations, specific pace, distance, destination, and start time, as they will vary each week. Sunny Sunday D Ride. 12:00 PM. Casual ride, well-suited for improving skills and group riding. Instruction provided as needed. Distance and speed will be dictated by the abilities of the group, and we will re-group as needed. Check the calendar and the list-serve or call the leader for details of each ride. Sunny Sunday C Spin-Off. 12:15 PM. A true C ride which cheerfully waits to regroup. Usually 25-30 miles. Meet at the Italian Fountain near the pergola entrance to the Azalea Garden, behind the Art Museum. Coordinator: Tom Witt, 215-977-2164, .

Mondays

"COS" Multi-Level Group Rides. 6:00. 8-18 mph, 10-40 miles. Join 150 other riders every Monday, April 5 through September 27 (except holidays) for multi-level group rides. We have 9 different groups ranging from a beginner's "hybrid" group (8-10 mph) to our fastest "A" group (18mph). All rides start 6:00 PM sharp in the rear parking lot of Church of the Saviour, 651 N. Wayne Ave., Wayne PA. We ride till sunset. Rain cancels the ride. Coordinators: Tom Madle, 215-641-7686, and Mike Lefkowitz, 610-687-2923.

Tuesdays

Chainsmokers Training Ride. 6:00 PM. Class B, 15-16 mph, 32-36 miles. Start at Mainly Bikes, 229 Haverford Avenue, Narberht. We ride the less travelled roads of the Mainline. We will increase the distance until we reach Valley Forge. Leaders: Arthur D. Elwood, 856-429-7733, and Jeff Kimmel, 610-446-1334, .

Tuesday Night Training Ride. 6:00 PM. Class B +/-, 17 mph, 30 miles. Start at the Italian Fountain. Fast-paced ride with no rest stops. The ride goes north through Germantown to Stenton Ave. and back via the bike trail. Leader: Bruce Taubman, 215-735-7935, .

Tuesday Evening Ride from Mt. Airy. Ride starts promptly at 6:00 PM. Class C+, 13 -14 mph, 28 to 32 miles. This is a fairly hilly ride, climbing through Chestnut Hill and into Ft. Washington State Park (Joshua Road), then fairly flat until a last mile long climb into Wyndmoor. Distance may decrease as the days get shorter at the end of the month. Meet at the Allen's Lane Train Station at the corner of Allen's Lane and Cresheim Road. Leader: Jeff Bakely, 215-843-1093, .

Wednesdays

NW Philly/Flourtown Multi-level Rides. Levels C/C+ (12-14 mph), B-/B (14-15 mph,) and B+ (16-17 mph). Rides start from the far end of the McDonald's Flourtown Shopping Center at 1890 Bethlehem Pike, Flourtown, PA (the shopping center behind the McDonald's on Bethlehem Pike between Mill Road and Valley Green Road). Meet at 5:45 PM; rides will roll out of the parking lot at 6:00 PM. We offer a variety of routes on relatively lightly-travelled roads within eastern Montgomery County and the northwestern portion of Philadelphia. Distances will vary depending on pace of the ride and available light. Check the Monthly Ride Calendar for possible changes or cancellations. Thursday Night B Training Ride - Bryn Mawr Local. 6:00 PM. Class B, 15-16 mph, 30 miles. Meet at the Italian fountain behind the Art Museum. We ride to Merion, Gladwyne, and West Conshohocken, returning via the bike path and Manayunk. We'll maintain a true B pace and regroup as necessary. A B+/A- ride that averages 18+ mph also leaves from the Italian Fountain at 6:00 PM. Leader: David Finger, , 215-605-8560.

C+ Training Ride. 6:00 PM. Class C+, 20 - 28 miles. Departs from the Italian Fountain. We'll begin with easier/shorter routes to get the season started and later build up to the traditional "3 Hill Challenge." Rides have some challenging hills. Coordinator: Jeff Bakely, , 215-843-1093.

C+ Training Ride. C/C+ Pace. Meet at the Italian Fountain at 9:15 AM. This ride is usually 40-45 miles. Most often we ride the Ambler ride. We?ll keep a steady pace and effort (rolling speed on flat terrain 15-16 mph). Rides have some challenging hills. This is a C level group ride, so plan on regrouping at the top of significant climbs and after traffic lights. Coordinator: Jeff Bakely, , 215-843-1093.
