Phileas Fogg was the main character in Jules Vernes’ 1872 novel Around the World in Eighty Days. At his London social club Fogg bets his fortune that he can return to his seat within 80 days of his departure. His rapid departure causes him to be suspected of bank robbery and he is doggedly pursued by Detective Fixx of the Yard. Fixx eventually learns Fogg is innocent and aids in his return to London. In the end Fogg’s trip takes 81 days and he falls into despair believing he has lost his bet and his fortune. At the last moment he realizes he that had crossed the International date line gaining a calendar day and arrives at his club in the nick of time, uttering “Here I am, gentlemen.” Please join us for a hike that may not span the globe, but will attempt to capture the sporting spirit of Fogg’s astounding journey. Where Fogg took to ships, trains and hot air balloons, we will take to boots, shoes, and trekking poles. Instead of meeting officers of Scotland Yard, we may have opportunity to give a nod and a wave to Philly’s Finest. Though we are unlikely to cross the International date line to gain a day on our calendar, we very well may cross the Wissahickon Gorge enough times to gain sufficient exercise to justify a few extra snacks during the Superbowl. Hope you can make it! Well-behaved leashed canine friends are welcome. If parking on the Chestnut Hill side, park in the upper lot. The lower lot is reserved for those eating at the restaurant.
