Leader: Linda McGrane, , 267-251-7862Hilly but pretty and meandering loop through southern Chester County, PA and northern Delaware, crossing the scenic Brandywine Creek a few times, as well as a few other creeks and streams. This route is based on a ride led by Tom Madle and Katie Eberhart, with an additional loop around the lovely & peaceful Hoopes Reservoir. We'll ride on "Stargazer Rd", and through green, rural countryside. Optional quick stop in Unionville at mile 19. Indoor rest stop at mile 27 in Kennett Square - choice of eateries. Total elevation gain is 3000 ft. We will stop to regroup as needed. Most of the climbing is in the first half. Please bring an on-bike snack with you, as well as two water bottles. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain 13mph average, as advertised. We'll also ride through the pretty campus of Haverford College, passing the Duck Pond. Quick rest stop for snack & bathroom at mile 19 in Haverford. Rolling terrain with a couple of brisk climbs. Total elevation gain 2398 feet. Outbound via Flourtown, Chestnut Hill, and Roxborough. Return via Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Conshohocken, and LaFayette Hill. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic, 30-35-ish mile loop, usually through Montgomery County or Lower Bucks, with a brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet most Sundays at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Instead of Bruno's, we may on occasion meet at another location in Chestnut Hill. Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this afternoon ride! We will stop to regroup if needed, but try as much as possible to maintain 13-15mph, due to short daylight. Plan is to return before 5:00pm. Please bring lights, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Specific details will be posted for each Sunday's Route. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT Feb. 26. Half this ride is flat as, well, an airport, and out of any traffic. When we're flat let's pace and get the speed up, then play it safe on the ride back. Ride through East Falls, Mount Airy, Chestnut Hill, Wyndmor, Oreland, Flourtown, Manayunk, and Bala Cynwyd. Several hills, but no killers. Thirty minute coffee stop at Starbucks in Flourtown at mile 20 or so. (It's all about the coffee.) Cassidy Vare will speak on the topics of how to winterize one's bike, as well as how to dress effectively for outdoor exercise in the cold. We will have time for socializing, and for posing questions to our expert presenters. REFRESHMENTS will be served, including beer & wine. We will experience the mid nineteenth centry industrial Philadelphia, PA waterfront with the Victorian waterfront of Riverton, NJ. We might need to walk our bikes across the bridge walkway. Last two times, the walk bikes sign was not there, so I cycled across on the walkway. Retuning through Camden and cycling over the Ben Franklin Bridge walkway after carrying our bikes up the three flights of stairs by to Philly. Rain, snow, icy roads cancels ride but not temperature.

(Newtown was founded by William Penn in 1684. The colonial part of town looks especially pretty when decorated for the holidays.) Lunch stop at an indoor food court at mile 24. On the return, we'll cross scenic Springfield Lake in Churchville. At mile 39, there is a mega-Wawa, if another rest stop is needed. Total climbing is 2508 feet - not too strenuous, but enough to burn off some calories in advance of our holiday feasts and treats. On the return to FWSP, around mile 48, there is a way to detour off the cue sheet to return to UDHS. This would shave off ~7 miles total. If winter weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a snow activity, e.g., cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. As long as we keep moving throughout the winter, we will maintain our base fitness level for the return of spring cycling in March.

Level C+/B-, 13.5-14.5 mph, 50+/- miles. Meet at Upper Dublin High School. The ride leaves at 9:00 am.
Leader: Elliot Titcher, , 215-740-1149Going to Bucks County - peaceful Tyler State Park and the charming (and historic) borough of Newtown, crossing the Neshaminy Creek. Lunch stop at an indoor food court at cue sheet mile 24. On the return, we'll cross scenic Springfield Lake in Churchville. At cue sheet mile 39, there is a mega-Wawa, if another rest stop is needed. We leave from the Jacobs Engineering parking lot on Ash Street on the left closest to the river and ride to the Art Museum via Umbria Street, Main Street Manayunk, and, if there are enough of us, MLK Drive. There is a brief stop at Lloyd Hall. Other paces may be offered if there is a leader. Strong headlamp (200 lumen minimum), and tail light are required as is reflective clothing. Rain, Snow or Ice on the trail or roads, and daytime high below freezing will cancel the ride.

Fridiay Afternoon Frolic - Erdenheim to Valley Forge/Wayne
Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 45 miles. Laurel Beech Park, 1313 East Mermaid Lane, Wyndmoor, PA (Springfield Township). Laurel Beech Park on Mermaid Lane is between Cheltenham Ave and Queen St.. Leader: Linda McGrane, , 267-251-7862Leader has to work in the morning, so today's ride will leave 12:30pm. (The Longwood Gardens ride has been rescheduled for next week.) This route will meet at Laurel Beech Park, and meander through Wyndmoor, Erdenheim, and Chestnut Hill, then down Barren Hill to pick up the Schuylkill River Trail at Spring Mill. We'll take the flat SRT to Valley Forge, cross the Sullivan Bridge, ride through Valley Forge National Park, then head to the Panera Cafe (or Starbucks) in the Gateway Shopping Center in Wayne for something hot (coffee, soup, etc.) The rest stop is at the half-way point. We'll return via the flat SRT to Spring Mill, then weave through Chestnut Hill back to Wyndmoor. Plan is to return by 4:45pm (sunset). Please bring lights, just in case we return after sunset. Total elevation gain on this route is pretty mild - 1774 feet.

Leader: Tim Carey, , 267-414-9037Let's try this ride again, rained out last two times listing it. I want a good cup of coffee at Orange Blossom Bakery and Cafe in Riverton, NJ. They also have a full breakfast menu. We will experience the mid nineteenth centry industrial Philadelphia, PA waterfront with the Victorian waterfront of Riverton, NJ. We might need to walk our bikes across the bridge walkway. Last two times, the walk bikes sign was not there, so I cycled across on the walkway. Retuning through Camden and cycling over the Ben Franklin Bridge walkway after carrying our bikes up the three flights of stairs by to Philly. Rain, snow, icy roads cancels ride but not temperature.

We will try to get back by 3 so you can head out for your New Years celebrations.
