This scenic loop, near Delaware Bay, will take us on quiet, country roads through farmlands, marshlands, & across peaceful creeks and rivers. Terrain is very gentle -- mostly flat, with a couple of small climbs, but these are less than 150 ft each. Total elevation gain is 1100 ft. This route has been extended beyond the route we did last year - this year's route will venture down to the inlet and marina on the Cohansey River. Rest stops at mile 23 (Alloway), mile 38 (Greenwich), and mile 54 (Hancock's Bridge). SHORT-CUT OPTION: There will be a self-guided short-cut for those wanting to ride ~57 miles. The shorter version will not go down to Greenwich or the inlet, but will have two rest stops at Alloway and Hancock's Bridge. Directions to the starting point at Fort Mott: I-295 South in NJ to Exit 1/NJ-49 E - Broadway for Pennsville/Salem. After 4 miles on NJ-49E/Broadway, turn right onto Fort Mott Rd, and stay on this road for 3.5 miles, til you get to the Bay. Entrance to the State Park will be on your right. From Center City Phila., drive time is LESS THAN ONE HOUR. Carpooling: Leader will be in parking lot of Conklin Playground, 15 E. Church Rd, Elkins Park, at 8:00am. Conklin is half a block below Cottman Ave/Township Line/PA-73 & Church Rd. If you'd like to car-pool, please contact Leader. Google Maps link for driving directions from Phila to Fort Mott: http://tinyurl.com/mm9kmed. TWO LEADERS, TWO PACES: Dan Oz will lead this ride at a faster pace. Thanks, Dan!

Chris McCandless was a young man disaffected with his family and civilization in general. He met his demise while living as a hermit in an abandoned school bus/cabin in the wilderness of Alaska. He was the subject of Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild and a movie of the same name. McCandless has been praised as a man of the highest integrity setting an example of how to live left without unsavory aspects of modern society. He has also been discredited as a young man unable to cope with the simple imperfections of human nature. I am sure the 'truth' is both, neither and mixture. The most practical lesson from his death is be extremely careful about selecting which wild plants to consume. McCandless made a serious identification error and ended up eating a poisonous root while miles from the nearest help. Fortunately, Debbie and Jim are hosting a delicious lunch for us after the hike so please don't eat any vegetation along the trail! Please join Helen and I for a pleasant walk in the woods of the Wissahickon Gorge. Since this is the first hike for the season, we will try to keep the pace and distance on the lighter side. Well-behaved four leggers welcome.

Instead of Bruno's, we may on occasion meet at another location in Chestnut Hill. Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this afternoon ride! We will stop to regroup if needed, but try as much as possible to maintain 13-15mph, due to short daylight. Plan is to return before 5:00pm. Please bring LIGHTS, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Specific details will be posted for each Sunday's Route. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT for the last Sunday in February. (Leader will be away cross-country skiing.) This ride will resume on the first Sunday of March. If winter weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a snow activity, e.g., cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. As long as we keep moving throughout the winter, we will maintain our base fitness level for the return of spring cycling in mid-March.
