Leaders: Stephen A. Muth, , 215-692-3585 and Helen Muth, , 267 567 7646Chris McCandless was a young man disaffected with his family and civilization in general. He met his demise while living as a hermit in an abandoned school bus/cabin in the wilderness of Alaska. He was the subject of Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild and a movie of the same name. McCandless has been praised as a man of the highest integrity setting an example of how to live left without unsavory aspects of modern society. He has also been discredited as a young man unable to cope with the simple imperfections of human nature. I am sure the 'truth' is both, neither and mixture. The most practical lesson from his death is be extremely careful about selecting which wild plants to consume. McCandless made a serious identification error and ended up eating a poisonous root while miles from the nearest help. Fortunately, Debbie and Jim are hosting a delicious lunch for us after the hike so please don't eat any vegetation along the trail! Please join Helen and I for a pleasant walk in the woods of the Wissahickon Gorge. Since this is the first hike for the season, we will try to keep the pace and distance on the lighter side.
