Occasionally, ad-hoc rides are announced. These rides are sent by email to all members of the BCP email list. To join this list, click here.     Friday Frolic w/Linda. Art Museum to Gwynedd and Springhouse. (SPECIAL EDITION - MEET at ART MUSEUM, due to setting up the Expo booth at the Convention Center at 3:30pm

    Level B-: 14mph, 52 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 9:30 am. Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6426603.

    11/1: Pretty loop from the Art Mueum to Ambler, North Wales, and Gwynedd. Outbound via Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, and Erdenheim. Optional quick rest stop at mile 20, then lunch stop at mile 28 at the new, huge, Whole Foods Market in Springhouse. Return via Gwynedd, Blue Bell, Plymouth Meeting, and the Schuylkill River Trail from Spring Mill to the finish. Total climbing is 2923 ft, and the terrain is mostly rolling. The final stretch on the SRT is flat. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain at least 13mph average, as advertised. Plan is to return before 3:00 - Leader needs to get to the Convention Center to set-up the BCP booth for the Bike Expo this weekend. MEETING POINT & PARKING: We will be meeting at the Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum, on Aquarium/Waterworks Drive. The parking here is timed, however, on the other side of Kelly Drive, Sedgley Drive has plenty of street parking without time limits. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. Explore pretty, peaceful roads in suburban counties -- Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, etc. Starting points will vary, so that we can cycle through different regions. Cue sheets and on-line route map will be provided for each ride. If weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a hike/walk (on foot). As long as we are enjoying outdoor physical exercise, and Mother Nature, in the company of friends, we'll have a memorable outing.


    Pre-Bike Expo Un-Loading and Set-up - Volunteers Needed

    Meet at Exhibit Hall E of the PA Convention Center, rear loading dock. The event starts at 3:30 pm.

    This is the 10th anniversary of the Philly Bike Expo - time flies! The Philly Bike Expo is a celebration of all things bicycle. This year's expo takes place Nov. 2 & 3, but our booth must be set-up by Friday evening, Nov. 1. If you would like to help with unloading our gear and supplies from the McVan, setting up the booth, etc., please visit the Expo Volunteer Sign-up page, at: https://phillybikeclub.org/bcpdo/life/exposignup The Volunteer Sign-up page is accessible from the homepage of the website. Setting up the booth works best with at least 4 volunteers, in order to open and raise the canopy tents, open and raise long tables, display the merchandise, display club brochures/literature and posters, etc. The Expo will take place at the PA Convention Center, Broad & Cherry Street entrance, Exhibit Hall E. On Friday, we will be entering the exhibit hall via the REAR LOCKING DOCK. Leader will provide details to our volunteers. The Expo Volunteer Sign-up page also provides time slots for volunteering at the booth during public hours on Saturday and Sunday, as well as for dismantling the booth and re-laoding, after the Expo closes at 4pm on Sunday.     Great roads with low traffic. We have a few routes that bring us out around or through Ridley Creek State Park.     Urban IMPROV ride to the Bike Expo (ad-hoc ride)

    Level C: 11mph, 11.8-ish miles. Meet at Amtrak 30th Street Station Central INFO booth. The ride leaves at 8:30 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    SEE: Soaring Bridges, Damp Echoing Tunnels, Frustrating Dead Ends, Beautiful Vistas – and more – in this bittersweet bike expedition that rolls over, around and under historic central Philadelphia, ending up at the Expo around opening time. PACE: stately. This is a no-drop ride, might have one or two stair climbs. NO CUE SHEET: we’ll be making it up as we go along! This is a Brompton-Friendly ride!


    Toss of the Dice Bryn Athyn

    Delaware County Riders go the Bike Expo

    Level D: 9-12mph, 30 miles. Meet at Lansdowne Regional Rail Station--OutBound North Side. The ride leaves at 10:15 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    OWLS (Older, Wiser, Longer, Slower) pace ride through the suburban areas of Delaware and Montgomery Counties to get to the PhillyBikeExpo.com. The ride will be longer and hiller going to the expo site and a much shorter mostly flat ride for the return trip. Please go the expo website for advanced ticket sales. We will spend time exploring the exhibits and possibly sitting in on some seminars. Please bring water, extra tube, and helmet(required by club rules). Bring $ for mid ride snack or meal. There is free protected parking for bikes at the expo site.(Neighborhood Bike Works ask for a voluntary small donation for the parking)

    Kayuh Pedalers: Special Expo Urban Ride

    Level C- through D: 10-12mph, 15-25 miles. Meet at Philadelphia Convention Center, Broad St & Cherry St. The ride leaves at 11:30 am.

We will explore the exhibits and maybe catch a seminar. We invite any of the riders to stay until the end to help with breakdown of the Philly Bike Club's exhibit at the end of the event on Sunday. The more that stay the faster we will be able to leave. Please bring $ for snacks or any of the many bike related goodies that will be available.     Bring yer bike & sense of adventure. Some days we'll ride familiar favorite routes, other days we'll scope out new routes. Today we'll ride the Schuylkill River Trail to Valley Forge Park, and then cut across to the Chester Valley Trail for lunch at Wegmans in Malvern (mile 27 on the trail). While not necessary, wouldn't hurt to bring locks in case we eat inside (looks like it will be warm enough to eat outside though). The only real hills are entering VFP on the way out and the return. NOTE: NO BATHROOMS AT THE START. Bathroom opportunities at Betzwood (mile 8.5), our turnaround on the CVT (mile 22.5), the lunch stop and Betzwood again (mile 36.5). Will regroup as needed, but must be able to maintain the posted pace. Must be willing to ride safely & obey traffic laws. PLEASE PARK IN THE REAR LEFT LOT AND MEET BY THE PICNIC TABLES FOR SIGN-IN.     Bring your sense of adventure today - north of the Uhlerstown/Frenchtown area is new to me. We'll ride the D&L trail north to Milford, cross over the Delaware to NJ, and then head south on the D&R trail. Lunch/snack break on the return (mile 19) in Frenchtown. Weather and group sentiment will determine whether we head directly back at the end via Bull's Island (30 miles) or loop around a little and cross over a bit further south at Stockton (32.5 miles). The ride is a mix of dirt, gravel, and loose rocks. Best suited for a gravel, cyclocross or hybrid bike, or a road bike with wide tires and a rider who doesn't mind a few rougher sections here and there. Leisurely speed - will regroup as needed. Photo-op stops are welcome. Please arrive 15 minutes early to ensure a prompt start. Hope you can join us.

    Rolling route to Souderton via scenic, pretty roads. Rest stop in Souderton at mile 28 -- choice of eateries: Wawa, pizzeria, coffee shop, etc. Elevation gain is 2151 ft. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain 13mph, as advertised. If a quick rest or bathroom break is needed before the lunch stop, there is a place at mile 17. On the return, if a quick rest or bathroom break is needed, there is a Wawa in North Wales at mile 40. SHORTER (36-mile) OPTION: The outbound and return segments of this route overlap on Plymouth Rd, between Lantern Lane and Township Line Rd, in Lower Gwynedd. If you would like to do a shorter ride, please consider parking your car at the Gwynedd Valley train station on Plymouth Rd, then meet our group on the corner of Plymouth and Township Line, where we will be turning. We should reach this turn (mile 9.7 on the 53-mile cue sheet) ~10:00. On the return, we will pass the Gwynedd Valley train station. This alternative will shave off ~17 miles. START/FINISH POINT: Flourtown Shopping Center on Bethlehem Pike is the plaza with McDonald's at the front, facing the Pike. There is a GIANT supermarket at the rear. We cyclists park in the rear of the lot, near GIANT. There is a Starbucks Coffee counter inside the GIANT, as well as indoor seating. Cue sheets will be available.     Cape Henlopen State Park Winter Bikepacking, Nov 9/10.

    Level C: 12mph, 50/55 miles. Meet at 30th Street AMTRAK Train Station - Saxby's Coffee Stand . The ride leaves at 6:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Winter Bikepacking? Cape Henlopen State Park, DE Sat/Sun, November 9th & 10th. One last Cycle Touring Bikepacking trip. Train assist to Egg Harbor, NJ, and return from Atlantic City, NJ. 50 to 55 miles each day, to the Cape May Ferry and back. For experienced Bikepackers. Need to be at AMTRAK 30th Street train station, Philadelphia, PA by 6 AM, in front of Saxby's coffee stand to board the 6:28 AM NJTRANSIT train to Atlantic City. Participants must be willing to do a riding speed of 12 mph in order to be at the Cape May Ferry by 2:15 PM for the 2:30 PM ferry departure to Lews, DE. Deboarding the train in Egg Harbor, cycling the 50 miles over Rt 50, Rt 664, Rt 610, Rt 47 & the back roads approach to the ferry. Pray for a tail wind. Just in case there is a 6 PM Ferry departure, so bicycle lights are a must. But our goal is to catch the 2:30 PM departure! Once over to Lewes, DE, we go straight to Cape Henlopen State Park Camp grounds, set up camp, take a shower and go to a nearby restaurant for dinner. After dinner, straight back to camp, into the tent and warm sleeping bag for the night. Average daily high temps 62 to 53, daily low temps 47 to 39. The return on Sunday will be more relaxed. Up at 6 AM, packed up and on the road by 7:30 AM. Find a coffee shop for a light breakfast. At the ferry by 8:30 AM or earlier. The morning ferry from Lews, DE is 8:45 AM arriving on the other side by 10:10 AM. Then cycle up the Jersey Shore Coast, Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Ilse City, Ocean City, Longport, Margate, Ventnor, Atlantic City. There are multiple return trains Atlantic City to fall back on. Pack a lunch, PB&J sandwiches are always good, eat out Saturday night, Sunday morning, and stopping as needed on the way up the coast. Taking the next train back to Philadelphia once we arrive in Atlantic City. No estimate time for getting back to Philadelphia. Just daylight on the road cycling.     South Jersey (Salem County) Flatland Adventure. CO-LEADER(S) WELCOME

    Level B-: 14-15mph, 68 (or 57 short-cut) miles. Meet at Fort Mott State Park, 454 Fort Mott Rd, Pennsville, NJ 08070 GPS: DMS 39° 36’ 09.80 ” N 75° 32' 55.39. The ride leaves at 8:45 am. Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6500771.

    Joke in progress: Ride Leader walks into a bar. Bartender asks, "How about a FLAT ride for a change?" Still working on the punchline..... This scenic loop, near Delaware Bay, will take us on quiet, country roads through farmlands, marshlands, & across peaceful creeks and rivers. Terrain is very gentle -- mostly flat, with a couple of small climbs, but these are less than 150 ft each. Total elevation gain is 1100 ft. This route has been extended beyond the route we did last year - this year's route will venture down to the inlet and marina on the Cohansey River. Rest stops at mile 23 (Alloway), mile 38 (Greenwich), and mile 54 (Hancock's Bridge). SHORT-CUT OPTION: There will be a self-guided short-cut for those wanting to ride ~57 miles. The shorter version will not go down to Greenwich or the inlet, but will have two rest stops at Alloway and Hancock's Bridge. Directions to the starting point at Fort Mott: I-295 South in NJ to Exit 1/NJ-49 E - Broadway for Pennsville/Salem. After 4 miles on NJ-49E/Broadway, turn right onto Fort Mott Rd, and stay on this road for 3.5 miles, til you get to the Bay. Entrance to the State Park will be on your right. From Center City Phila., drive time is LESS THAN ONE HOUR. Carpooling: Leader will be in parking lot of Conklin Playground, 15 E. Church Rd, Elkins Park, at 7:30am. Conklin is half a block below Cottman Ave/Township Line/PA-73 & Church Rd. If you'd like to car-pool, please contact Leader.     Bring yer bike & sense of adventure. Some days we'll ride familiar favorite routes, other days we'll scope out new routes. Today we'll ride to Snoozy's Cafe in Schwenksville (mile 28), with a park rest stop at mile 11. The middle part of the ride follows much of the Scenic Schuylkill Century route of the mid 2010s (nostalgic for me, Howard, as I developed the route with the help of some others). It is the most rural and scenic, but also the hilliest part of the ride. Almost half the day's total elevation gain is the 15 miles between the rest stop and about 2 miles before Schwenksville. There's a WaWa across the street for those just looking for a snack, but note: they don't have bathrooms. The middle part of the ride follows many of the roads used during the popular Alpaca ride in late September. Similar to last week, it is the hilliest, most rural and scenic part of the ride (but not as hilly overall). Will regroup as needed, but must be able to maintain the posted pace.     FOR 11/22: Pretty loop fron Wentz Run Park in Whitpain to Perky Joe's Cafe in Harleysville. Outbound via Indian Creek and Vernfield, return via Perkiomen Creek and Evansburg State Park. Cafe stop is at mile 19. After the cafe, we can stop at Landis Market at mile 20 to stock up on water, Gatorade, etc., for the return ride. Total climbing is 2567 ft. Rolling terrain, with two major climbs. Towards the end of the ride, there is a Wawa at mile 36, if another snack break is needed. Marathon starts at 7:30, so we should cross Kelly Drive before even the fastest runners approach the Art Museum finish line, and by the time we return, Marathon should be over. But if you are driving to the start, plan accordingly. Ride through East Falls, Wyndmoor, Oreland, Fort Washington, Upper Dublin, Ambler, Flourtown, Manayunk, and Bala Cynwyd. Several hills but no killers. 35-minute coffee stop at Abyss in Ambler (It's all about the coffee!). This scenic loop, near Delaware Bay, will take us on quiet, country roads through farmlands, marshlands, & across peaceful creeks and rivers. Terrain is very gentle -- mostly flat, with a couple of small climbs, but these are less than 150 ft each. Total elevation gain is 1100 ft. This route has been extended beyond the route we did last year - this year's route will venture down to the inlet and marina on the Cohansey River. Rest stops at mile 23 (Alloway), mile 38 (Greenwich), and mile 54 (Hancock's Bridge). SHORT-CUT OPTION: There will be a self-guided short-cut for those wanting to ride ~57 miles.     In honor of Thanksgiving turkey, this ride is a revival of the late Peter Odell's classic route to the Turkey Point Lighthouse, on the scenic and peaceful peninsula between the Elk River and the North East River, at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Mostly quiet roads in northwestern Delaware and northeastern Maryland. Rest stop at mile 18.5, in the cute town of Northeast, MD. ScenicTurkey Point Lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is at mile 31.5. (The Lighthouse Trail runs right along the perimeter of the peninsula.) On the return, we have a rest stop at a market/deli at mile 45. Total elevation gain is 3986 feet. Mostly rolling terrain, with some steep climbs (up-down-up-down) close to the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula. We will stop to regroup as needed. Travel time from Philadelphia to Newark is ~one hour. Driving Directions from Philadelphia: I-95 South into DE, then DE-273 West toward Newark/Univ. of DE. DE-273 will lead you to Main St. The Newark Shopping Center, the Rail Trail parking lot, and Bike Line & Ski Bum stores will be on your right.
