Rancocas Creek Greenway Ribbon Cutting, Pennington Park, Delanco, NJ

The Delaware River Heritage Trail will be opening another section with the Rancocas Creek Greenway ribbon cutting at Penninton Park, 801 Creek Rd, Delanco, NJ Monday, August 22nd, 4:30 pm. I am leading a ride to this event as representatives of The Bicycle Club of Philadelphia and Philly. You know how much public figures like ribbon cuttings. Plus they are impressed knowing cyclists from the wide area show up to applaud their work. The trail connects Amico Island Park to Pennington Park. on the north side of the Rancocas Creek. If there is time, we will stop for Ice Cream at the Dredge Harbor Castle Drive In. Return on the Riverline Train and cycling back into Philadelphia over the Ben Franklin Bridge. This ride from Conshy will return by ~7:00pm to the Jacobs parking lot. Scheduled for most Thursday evenings throughout summer, weather permitting. Gently paced, post-work evening ride to pedal away work stresses, suited for novices, newcomers to area, and/or anyone seeking a low-intensity recovery ride. Start by riding on Schuylkill River Trail, and/or, Cross County Trail, which connects the Schuylkill w/Plymouth Meeting . As riders get stronger, we can turn off the trails and explore some pretty roads in the area. Please bring LIGHTS in case we return close to dark. Our mileage will be determined by how much evening light we have. Occasionally, this ride may meet earlier in afternoon, due to other event in evening. Back Yard Beans in Lansdale at Mile 40. Return to Horsham Library via North Wales, Gwynedd, and the Horsham Power Line Trail. Mostly gently rolling terrain with one large climb. Total elevation gain 2516 ft. GENERIC DECRIPTION: Scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. Explore pretty, peaceful roads in suburban counties -- Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, etc. Starting points will vary, so that we can cycle through different regions. Frenchtown to Merrill Creek Reservoir Challenge + Ice Cream, New & Improved Route by Charlie B. 50-mi Short-Cut Option Available. CO-LEADER(S) WELCOME

Leader: Linda McGrane, , 267-251-7862Hilly but pretty loop through Warren and Hunterdon Counties, NJ, to the scenic Merrill Creek Reservoir. New & improved route by Charlie B. Ice cream at mile 58. This route includes a couple of 400-ft climbs, and one 640-ft climb, but the vistas from the summits are magnificent. We'll be riding mostly on quiet and shaded country roads, but also passing through the quaint towns of Milford, Riegelsville, Stewartsville, and Bloomsbury. Initial and final stretches of the route, along River Road, are flat. The challenging hills section, ~10 miles of climbing, is in the middle. Total elevation gain on the 63-mi route is 4090 ft, but we will stop to regroup as needed. Food stops at mile 24 in Stewartvsille (before climbing to the Reservoir), and at mile 46 in Bloomsbury. (We'll also have a brief photo/scenery stop at the spectacular Reservoir at mile 31.) From the food stop in Bloomsbury, we'll descend to the village of Little York, then return to Milford and Frenchtown via downhill-to-flat roads. Depending on where you live, please allow an hour for the drive to Frenchtown. 53-Mi short-Cut Option: Charlie B. has developed a 53-mi alternate route which avoids the steep climb to Merrill Creek Reservoir, but still stops at the Tauro market rest stop. Chester Valley Trail Connecter to the Schuylkill River Trail

Leader: Tim Carey, , 267-414-9037Much progress has been.made on the conector between the Chester Valley Trail and the Schuylkill River Trail at Norristown, PA. Let's cycle out there and walk the trail with our bikes. We will go out the SRT to Betswood, Valley Forge. Explore the new short portion of the Schuylkill River Trail West on the west side of the Sullivan Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge connecting Betswood trail head to Valley Forge Park. From there, through the Park down to Wegmans of King od Prussia. After lunch we will explore the connecter, walking our bikes over the dirt foundation of the trail and take a close up look at the two impressive bridge foundations, and imaging the structure that will be lowered in to the foundation. From there we will be able to cycle the trail completed but not open section from DeKalb Pike to Norristown, taking the Schuylkill River Trail back to Philly. This is an all day ride! Church of the Savior (COS) Multi-Level Group Rides

Leader: Thomas Beckett, , 610-733-7030The Church of the Savior (COS) Monday night ride is sponsored by both the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia and Suburban Cyclists Unlimited. It is the largest group ride in the region with up to 75 riders participating from April through October each year. Our riders have varying ability levels ranging from beginner (“D” level) riders on hybrid bikes that average 9-12 mph through semi-professional (“A” level) riding at 22-25 mph. As a result, we break into groups that are about 7-10 riders although these groups may be as large as 20 riders at times.

But instead of making you (and me) ride 80 miles of hills, I'm going to do my wife's and my favorite ride as a memorial to her, since the third anniversary of her death is 4 days from now. We'll follow the usual hill route to the driveway on Hagys Ford Road. Then, we'll go up Williamson Road and wind our way up to Old Gulph Road, where we'll take a glorious downhill to Matson Ford Road and into Conshohocken for lunch at the Great American Pub. From there you can choose to return via the SRT. But, this is a hill ride and I'm following the route that my wife and I loved. So, I will lead those who are willing onto River Road, up Umbria, onto the Cynwyd Trail, and through West Laurel Hill Cemetary to put a stone on my late wife's grave. From there we'll head back to the start. Even if this isn't 80 miles, it should be rigorous enough to count as an 80th birthday ride. Note the summer hours 9 AM start.

SSC City Loop Ride -- Art Museum to AIM and back (w/ route marking)

Leader: Chuck Herbert, , 267-228-1230Join us for this unique ride! BCP's Scenic Schuylkill Century is this Sunday, Sept 11th. On Friday we will ride the event's City Loop that goes from AIM to the Art Museum and back, but we will start and end at at Lloyd Hall, checking the route and stopping to mark roughly 30 turns along the way by placing adhesive paper route arrows on the pavement. (The arrows biodegrade and fade with a few weeks.) Please join us for this leisurely, but interesting ride. We'll stop for beverages and for lunch along the way. The attached Ride with GPS file is the SSC City Loop, which we will follow, but starting at Lloyd Hall instead. Beginning riders are welcome to join us, as well. Helmets are required. Bring water and a spare tube. Light refreshments will be provided. The ride will probably last until after 2 pm, but riders are welcome to return early.

Challenging yet manageable climbing miles 27-34 followed by long and fast 3 mile descent prior to stopping briefly at Bowers Park. Our stop at the Festival will not be longer than 10-15 mins. Another 3 miles of climbing after rest stop /snack at the Festival before flattening out and returning to rollers for remainder of return. Outbound, we have a short rest break for snack & bathroom at Turkey Hill at mile 20. On the return, we have an optional quick stop at Wawa at mile 63 at the circle in Ziglersville (where Routes 29 & 73 merge). No one dropped / regroup as necessary but please be prepared to maintain the advertised pace. Total climbing 4660 feet. It is the largest group ride in the region with up to 75 riders participating from April through October each year. Our riders have varying ability levels ranging from beginner (“D” level) riders on hybrid bikes that average 9-12 mph through semi-professional (“A” level) riding at 22-25 mph. As a result, we break into groups that are about 7-10 riders although these groups may be as large as 20 riders at times.

We are riding a bit earlier than usual to take advantage of the warmer weather that we have been enjoying. We will be using a "Classic" route (Pre-COVID, Pre-Ida) for this ride. The only variation will be a detour around Alexauken Creek RD near the end of the ride since it is still closed due to a bridge being out. No bathrooms are available at this start location, so you might want to make a stop in PA or a local business before arriving at the ride site. Please arrive at 8:15 am for an 8:30 am departure. The Ride has about 3,000' of climbing. The lunch stop will be in Whitehouse Station at Jerry's Brooklyn Grill a little over 35 miles into the ride. Outdoor seating is available at Jerry's. Please being mask just in case it should be needed at one of the stops. Helmets are required. We recommend that you bring 2 water bottles, at least one spare tube, and tools that might be needed for quick repairs or fixing the dreaded flat. RSVPs are appreciated so that we can get an accurate count. Rain and/or other bad weather cancels the ride. If anyone would like to lead another group at a different pace, please let us know. The folks at St Luke's say we can park bikes by the hospitality desk, but you may want to bring a lock just in case. So bring $10 or $8 those 65 and older for the round trip fare. 10am ferry and 3:30pm or 4:30pm return. We will stop for food break at Delran Coffee Shop. Cycle a short distance on Rt 130 over the Rancocas Creek to get to the Pennington Park trail head. We will also stop for ice cream at the Dredge Harbor Castle Drive In. This ride is 45 miles in length and starts on the D&C canal in Chesapeake City, MD. We will follow the canal trail east to Delaware City where we will take a short snack break in the park along the Delaware Bay. Then we will cross the canal on the Reedy Point Bridge (biggest climb on the ride) and follow scenic low traffic roads south to Port Penn and Augustine Beach. Then we will circle back west and north to cross the canal again on the St Georges Bridge (with dedicated bike lane) to cycle back to Chesapeake City. Once back we have the option for lunch/dinner at Schaefer's Canal House. Bring snacks and water for the ride. Bring money for lunch/dinner after ride. No drops.
