Sat May 2, 2009 - Teaching Ride for Beginners
Level D+/C-, 11 mph, 20-25 miles. Formal Entrance to the Azelia Garden, next to the Italian Fountain, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 9:29 am. Our destination is the Noble-Elkins Park area, north of Philadelphia. I can not recall a BCP ride that has visited this attractive area of big, old houses, and big, old shade trees. Our goal is to practice cohesive riding while enjoying the attractive suburbs. We'll spend a few miles circling the area on the Tookany Creek Parkway. No big hills - the ride out should be quite flat, the return to Philly mostly downhill. An easy ride suitable for people recovering from open-heart surgery. We'll ride slow so we can focus on learning group riding skills and etiquette, plus bridging, blocking, sandbagging, drinking, blowing, preceding, half-wheeling, pushing, drifting, holding, honking, and drafting. This is not a training ride - training rides focus on speed, acceleration, and competition. Experienced riders are invited to come as instructors. Registration not required, but the leader enjoys getting emails showing interest. Ride leaves at 9:30.

Level C/C+, 11-13 mph, 40 miles. Betzwood parking area of Valley Forge Historical National Park, across the river from the VFNHP Visitor Center. The ride leaves at 9:30 am. Fortunately, for us biking gourmands, Quizno's has taken its place. (We kept the original name because Quiznos doesn't work well in the title). The return is thru Evansburg State Park (scenic, featuring spring water) or the new Skippack loop to the Perkiomen Trail (shorter)...take your pick. Either way, roads bikes are OK and we'll lead you. We stop to regroup as required so no one dropped. A multi-club ride - cue sheets provided. Bring, snack, beverage, lock and cash. In the event of weather concerns, or for directions to the start (incl. SEPTA), contact leaders.

Level B/B-, 14 mph, 49 miles. Bull's lsland Recreation Area on NJ 29 north of Stockton, NJ. The ride leaves at 9:30 am. Your legs will be put to the test early as we climb away from the river before the two-mile mark. After a ride along the ridge, a drop into Frenchtown and splendid Creek Rd, we roll our way to the first daunting challenge: The 2.7 mile climb up Rick Rd. After a nice descent and a short water stop we’ll take on the 1.7 miles of pain that is the mighty Musconetcong Mtn. Once the monkey's off your back catch your breath if you can during the ensuing short descent because 2.4 mile Tunnel Hill Rd. awaits you. But, as they say, what goes up must come down. What follows next is a gorgeous descent of some 900 ft. to the town of Milford. The remainder of the route is flat to slightly rolling. In the inaugural run of this ride two years ago we crowned a Queen of Cong. Last year the ladies swept the top three spots in the struggle against the hairy beast. Will this be the year we finally have a King of Cong? Regardless, the victor will receive a prize at the end of the ride. Cue sheets provided. The ride starts PROMPTLY at 9:45. E-mail by May 29th for directions to the start. Check the ride calendar after 8:00 for a cancellation notice if the weather is questionable.
