So lets ride a few miles more than usual to a different destination - Lahaska (Peddler's Village). Expect a very nice ride on mostly low trafficked, scenic roads, rolling hills with a few climbs (nothing outrageous) and great company. Level C+/B-, 13-14 mph, 30 miles. Meet at Reynolds Dog Park, Longford Rd, Oaks, PA. The ride leaves at 7:00 pm. Dress in your brightest reflective clothes, charge up your light batteries, and join us for a great workout on low-traffic roads. This ride will easily beat anything you can do on an indoor trainer. Don't lose that great conditioning just because it's darker now - seize the night and join the fun. Ride canceled if snow or ice is on the roads, or if precipitation is forecast between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Low temperatures do NOT cancel the ride - add more layers. Level B-/C+, 13-15 mph, 55 miles. Central Park in Doylestown - Wells Rd between Turk and Lower State/Court St.. The ride leaves at 9:50 am. FOR 12/5: Special route from Doylestown through Upper Bucks County, into Hunterdon County, NJ, on [mostly] peaceful and pretty country roads. This route is rescheduled from last Friday, due to weather & slick roads. Outbound via Buckingham, Lahaska, and Ringoes, returning via Stockton, Bulls Island, and Carversville. Before crossing the river into NJ, we have an optional quick Wawa stop at mile 17. Indoor rest stop at the Carousel Deli in Ringoes at mile 26. On the return, we will be in Carversville at mile 45 - we can stop at the Carversville Store if needed for a bathroom/snack break. Total elevation gain is 2461 feet - rolling, but nothing too steep. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain 13mph average, as advertised. Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 32 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. Scenic loop from Bruno's to the impressive Bryn Athyn Cathedral & College on Huntingdon Pike. Rolling hills but pretty roads from Chestnut Hill to Bryn Athyn and Huntingdon Valley, via Flourtown, Jenkintown, Rockledge, & Glenside. Quick rest stop (indoor) at mile 21. Terrain is rolling with a few steep climbs, but we will stop to regroup as needed. Total elevation is 2300 feet. No one dropped, but we need to maintain at least 13mph average, as advertised. Sun December 7, 2014 - Sunday Afternoon (Post-Hike) Winter Ramble Ride (General description -- specific details will be posted for each Sunday)
Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 30+/- miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:20 pm. Scenic, 30-ish mile loop, usually through Montgomery County or Lower Bucks, with a brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this ride! We will stop to regroup if needed, but try as much as possible to maintain 13-15mph, due to short daylight. Plan is to return before 5:00pm. Please bring lights, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Specific details will be posted for each Sunday's Route. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT Feb. 22. Fri December 12, 2014 - Friday Frolic - Ft. Washington State Park to Collegeville. 10:00 Start at HAWK WATCH parking lot.
Level B-/C+, 13-15 mph, 46 miles. Meet at Ft. Washington State Park Hawk Watch Parking Lot. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Slightly later start time, due to the early morning temperature. Pretty loop through Montgomery County, passing through Ambler, Blue Bell, Evansburg, Eagleville, across the Perkiomen, on our way to Collegeville. Indoor rest stop at mile 24 at Wegman's. Return route will include the flat Schuylkill River Trail for ~5 miles, and we'll ride through Norristown Farm Park. If a second quick stop is needed, there is a convenience store at mile 38. Terrain is rolling with a few brisk climbs (total climbing is just under 3000 ft), but we will stop to regroup as needed. Most of the climbing is in the first half. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain at least 13mph average, as advertised. To access the Hawk Watch: if coming from Stenton Ave, turn north onto Joshua Rd at the traffic light. When you see the yellow deer-crossing sign, make a soft right into the state park at the "Militia Hill picnic area" sign, then quick left onto Park Rd. If approaching from Skippack Pike/73, turn south onto Militia Hill Rd, then make a quick left up the hill on Park Rd. Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 50 miles. Parking lot behind the Chadds Ford Post Office, at US-1/Baltimore Pike, PA-100/Creek Rd, and Hoffman's Mill Rd. The ride leaves at 9:45 am. Hilly but pretty and meandering loop through southern Chester County, PA and northern Delaware, crossing the scenic Brandywine Creek a few times, as well as a few other creeks and streams. This route is based on a ride led by Tom Madle and Katie Eberhart, with an additional loop around the lovely & peaceful Hoopes Reservoir. We'll ride on "Stargazer Rd", and through green, rural countryside. Optional quick stop in Unionville at mile 19. Indoor rest stop at mile 27 in Kennett Square - choice of eateries. We meet in the parking lot behind the school near the bus depot - Come join me for a tour of some Montgomery County & Philadelphia synagogues and a traditional lunch of potato latkes cooked by Lori the extraordinaire at the end of the ride. The ride includes a route that goes through old Chestnut Hill, an area we seldom ride through. Last year we had great weather and the long range forecast is looking good so far. This route involves some backtracking, but minimal breaking on downhills. We will climb Umbria, River Road, Manor Road, Oak Street, Jones Road, Gypsy/Hollow, Barren Hill, then back over Umbria and into Manayunk for our only rest stop (at mile 35) for coffee (it's all about the coffee). Regrouping if necessary, but riders are expected to be able to do the advertised pace (which is what our computers should read as "average" at the finish). Preregistration strongly encouraged. Pretty loop from Flourtown to Bucks County. Outbound via Maple Glen, Warrington, and Jamison. Turn-around point is just south of Doylestown. Ride on lovely, peaceful roads, such as Rushland and Mozart. Quick rest stop at mile 19 for bathroom and snack. Sit-down lunch stop at Del Val College Market at mile 36. Return via Springhouse and Fort Washington. Total elevation gain 2600 feet with rolling terrain. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain 13mph, as advertised. Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 48 miles. Rose Tree Park in Media, PA - N. Providence Rd & Rose Tree Rd, just north of the US-1 Bypass, accessible via the Blue Route (I-476). The ride leaves at 9:45 am. This scenic route through southern Delaware County & eastern Chester County is a revival of a holiday-themed ride from "back in the day", when Bob Paradise was President of BCP. Pretty loop to and from Longwood Gardens, which is decorated to the hilt for Christmas. We have the OPTION of buying tickets to enter to see their Christmas Tree show - the group can vote on this. If the group would prefer to NOT do the indoor tour, this is fine - we can admire the outdoor decorations, then get back on the road sooner. On the outbound, we have a quick Wawa break at mile 13, then, at Longwood Gardens at mile 26, we have the option of eating lunch in their indoor cafe. On the return, there's a Wawa stop if needed at mile 36. This route will take us through part of Ridley Creek State Park, past Cheyney University, and some peaceful stretches along Creek Rd. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this ride! Sat December 27, 2014 - Delightful, Delicious D (and D+/C-) Ride, Saturday Edition - Glenside to Plymouth Meeting/Conshohocken
Level D/D+/C-, 8-12 mph, 24 miles. Meet at Glenside Public Library parking lot. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. This ride is for novice cyclists, newcomers to Phila., or for those seeking a gentle recovery ride. Anyone for hot coffee, tea, or cocoa, mixed with warm conversation? Scenic loop on mostly quiet, suburban roads from Glenside to Plymouth Meeting/Conshohocken to Panera Bread cafe. Indoor rest stop at mid-way point. We will climb a few hills here & there, but slow & gentle climbing (or walking up hills) is perfectly fine on this ride. We'll stop to regroup as often as needed. Cue sheets will be provided, but the route can be adjusted as needed. Ride is cancelled in the event of rain/snow/slick roads. Please contact the Leader if you have questions. Level C+, 12.5-14.5 mph, 50 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 10:15 am. Please note the start time. We'll be doing Joe Lubeck's Wegman ride. We'll climb about 2800' and ride with a steady pace and effort but, as necessary, will wait to regroup. Wet roads and/or rain cancel ride. Bring $ for Wegman's. I haven't been riding regularly, so this will be a true, laid-back C+. The weather is supposed to be sunny and mild, so we should seize the opportunity before the real doldrums set in. It's also a great way to catch up with some cronies we may not have seen during the last few weeks due to the chilly conditions. Cue sheets will be available.

Sun December 28, 2014 - Sunday Afternoon (Post-Hike) Winter Ramble - Chestnut Hill to East Norriton
Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 33 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. Pretty & meandering loop from Bruno's in Chestnut Hill, to the Panera cafe in East Norriton. Outbound via LaFayette Hill and Plymouth Meeting, return via Blue Bell and Flourtown. Total elevation gain is 1633 feet, according to ridewithgps.com. Rolling terrain with a few brisk climbs (including Bean Rd at mile 12-13), but nothing too steep. Most of the climbing is in the first half, before mile 20. Brief, indoor rest stop at Panera at mile 21. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain 13 mph average, as advertised. Plan is to return by 5:00. GOOD NEWS: Winter Solstice was last Sunday. Beginning next week, we will notice daylight gradually getting longer. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic, 30-35 mile loop, usually through Montgomery County or Lower Bucks, with a brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this ride! Please bring lights, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Specific details will be posted for each Sunday's Route. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT Feb. 23. (Leader will be away.) This ride will resume on March 2. Wed December 31, 2014 - Nighttime Phoenixville Dog Ride
Level C+/B-, 13-14 mph, 30 miles. Meet at Reynolds Dog Park, Longford Rd, Oaks, PA. The ride leaves at 7:00 pm. Dress in your brightest reflective clothes, charge up your light batteries, and join us for a great workout on low-traffic roads. This ride will easily beat anything you can do on an indoor trainer. Don't lose that great conditioning just because it's darker now - seize the night and join the fun. Ride canceled if snow or ice is on the roads, or if precipitation is forecast between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Low temperatures do NOT cancel the ride - add more layers.
