Sun December 6, 2015 - Hike the Wissahickon: Dr. Livingstone Edition
Hike hike, 6-8 miles. Wissahickon Braves Arrow Field, Henry Avenue and Walnut Lane, Philadelphia, PA (Across from Walnut Lane Golf Club on Magdelena St.). The hike leaves at 9:30 am. David Livingstone was a Victorian era Scottish missionary/explorer best known for his efforts to map the inner regions of sub-Saharan Africa during the expansion of the British Empire. In his quest to locate the source of the Nile River his expeditions mapped numerous lakes and watercourses, including the magnificent Victoria Falls. Livingstone was less successful as a missionary, there being only one documented case of his converting an African to Christianity. It was he who was the subject of the famous quote, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” uttered by Henry Stanley who had been sent out to find him. Please join Helen and I for a hike that will mirror Dr. Livingstone’s expeditions albeit on a smaller scale. First, we will transport ourselves to the inner regions of Fairmont Park, a place entirely unknown to the vast majority of Victorian era Britons. Then where Livingstone searched for the source of the Nile, we will pause to consider the source of the Wissahickon. Where he survived deprivations of hunger, parasitism and disease, we will need to side step patches of poison ivy which can cause a nasty rash even out of season. Where our intrepid hero forged good relations with local peoples, we will nod and wish a good day to other trail users with whom we cross paths. Above all, we will be faithful to Dr. Livingstone’s spirit when he said, “I am prepared to go anywhere, provided it be forward.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dkeAmnjWHo)
