Sun December 31, 2017 - Hike the Wiss: Franklin Expedition Edition
Hike Arctic, 2-3 mph, 6-8 miles. Blue Bell Field Parking Lot, 842 West Walnut Lane, Philadelphia, PA, 19144 (https://goo.gl/maps/fb5NrEtdX832). The hike leaves at 9:30 am. Sir John Franklin set out to chart the Northwest Passage in 1845. This passage was the dream of shippers wanting to avoid the long and perilous journey around Cape Horn of Tierra Del Fuego in South America. Franklin was an experienced Arctic explorer, but he, his crew, and his two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, never returned. Two rescue expeditions were sent out in 1848 and 1854, finding artifacts local Inuit took from abandoned camps. In 1859, a note was discovered on King William Island explaining how the two ships became ice bound, Franklin had died, and the crew was attempting to walk out to a trading post. A 1981 research expedition found remains there and on Beechey Island showing signs of pneumonia, tuberculosis, scurvy, lead poisoning and cannibalism. In 2014, timbers from the Erebus were located by divers in 33 feet of water off the coast of mainland Canada. The ship's bell and other items were also found. The New York Times has an article inventorying the artifacts: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/03/20/magazine/franklin-expedition.html. In deference to Franklin and his men, we will avoid the Northwestern Avenue passage for our hike this week starting near the Southern end of the park. Instead of taking to two ships, we will take to two feet. We will dress warmly and eat healthful snacks to avoid exposure, disease and scurvy, yet we will leave no artifacts of our expedition behind. Most importantly, despite the Arctic weather settling into the Philly area, we will enjoy each other's company in the outdoors on the last day of the year. Hope you can make it. The on-line route map is https://goo.gl/maps/fb5NrEtdX832.
