HIKE CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN We will find some hills & valleys to climb and hopefully get the heart rate up. Possibly cross a stream, maybe even see a deer or an Eagle. Appropriate shoes for hiking in the park are a good idea. Remember to park in the upper lot & don't leave valuables in site. Four legged members are welcome as long as they are on a leash. Bring extra tube, dress for the weather, water, and $ for mid-ride snack stop. Riders must wear helmet (required by the club).     Sun December 1, 2019 - CANCELLED, DUE TO RAIN Sunday PM (Post-Hike) Winter Ramble Ride - Bruno's to Narberth, via Manayunk Bridge Trail

    Level B-: 14mph, 35 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. CANCELLED, DUE TO RAIN For 12/1: Pretty loop from Bruno's in Chestnut Hill to Narberth, via SRT and Manayunk Bridge Trail. Rest stop at Wawa at mile 21.Outbound via Plymouth Meeting and Spring Mill. Return from Narberth via the Pencoyd Bridge, Barren Hill Rd to Harts Lane. Total climbing 1840 feet. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic, 30-35-ish mile loop, usually through Montgomery County or Lower Bucks, with a brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet most Sundays at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Instead of Bruno's, we may on occasion meet at another location in Chestnut Hill. Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this afternoon ride! We will stop to regroup if needed, but try as much as possible to maintain 13-15mph, due to short daylight. Plan is to return before 5:00pm. Please bring LIGHTS, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Specific details will be posted for each Sunday's Route. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT for the second Sunday in February (2/9/20). This ride will resume on the third Sunday of February, and continue til the end of hiking season in mid-March. If winter weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a snow activity, e.g., cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. As long as we keep moving throughout the winter, we will maintain our base fitness level for the return of spring cycling in mid-March. Cue sheets will be available.     Level D: 10mph, 26 miles. Meet at Cosmic Cafe, Lloyd Hall, # 1 Boathouse Row, Kelly Dr, East Fairmount Park . The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Tuesdays are Suzy-Jo Donut day at the Cafe at Riverbend without needing to go on to Bridgeport, PA. This morning's route will go straight out Kelly Dr, Manayunk Canal Tow Path and the Schuylkill River Trail to the Cafe at Riverbend. Then a straight shot back over the SRT. Rain, snow, icy roads being reported by KYW, outside their studio one hour prior to start, cancels. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Fri December 6, 2019 - Friday Frolic w/Linda. Scouting Ride for the 2020 Quad, 47-mile route

    Level B-: 14mph, 47 miles. Meet at Green Lane Park Morrow Pavilion. The ride leaves at 9:45 am. Today's ride is a possible route option for the 2020 Quad, exploring some new, but pretty, roads. We might catch up with Chuck Herbert's ride group. Meet at the Morrow Pavilion at Green Lane Park. This route will take us to the park used for the Lenape Rest Stop. Please bring snacks with you. Total climbing is 2376 ft. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. Explore pretty, peaceful roads in suburban counties -- Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, etc. Starting points will vary, so that we can cycle through different regions. Please check daily calendar for details of each Friday's route -- terrain, mileage, rest stops, etc. Cue sheets and on-line route map provided for each ride.     Fri December 6, 2019 - Quad County Metric Route Scouting Ride

    Level C: 13-14mph, 26.5 miles. Meet at Green Lane Park Morrow Pavilion. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Join us as we scout a possible 26-mile route for our sister club SCU's Quad County Metric, to be held next May. There are rest rooms, bu no running water at the start. Please bring your own water for the ride and your own mid-ride snack. We will probably average about 13 to 14 mph as we review the route and should be back by about 12:30 pm. The ride starts at the Morrow Pavilion in Green Lane Park, Montgomery County. It is not accessible via public transportation. 1,300 ft of climbing. Rural roads Cue sheets will be available. We have a few routes that bring us out around or through Ridley Creek State Park. Average speed will be 16-17 mph, but note that these routes include over 4000' of climbing.     Level B/B-: 14.5-15mph, 46 +/- miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 8:45 am. Assemble at 8:45. Depart at 8:50 SHARP!. Simon is heading northwest; we will head northeast, a bit earlier and a bit slower. Ride through East Falls, Wyndmoor, Oreland, Fort Washington, Upper Dublin, Ambler, Flourtown, and Manayunk. Several hills but no killers. 35-minute coffee stop at Abyss in Ambler (It's all about the coffee!). Will regroup at top of hills if necessary, but riders are expected to maintain posted speed (what our computers read upon ride completion). PLEASE PREREGISTER: saves time; ensures that I will be able to read important emergency info; and no problem if you change your mind and don't show up since we will not be waiting past the posted departure time.     Meet at Main Line Cycles, 919 Montgomery Ave, Narberth. The nearest intersection is at Old Gulph Rd - there is a traffic light here, as well as a Wawa & Staples.. The event starts at 3:00 pm. This is an INDOOR social event, held RAIN OR SHINE. Social and educational meeting for members, to help us "Keep Rolling Through the Winter," that is, how to maintain one's physical fitness & conditioning (via outdoor and/or indoor training), how to minimize winter weight gain, how to winterize one's bicycle for harsh weather & road conditions, and, how to dress properly for outdoor activities in the cold. Physical Therapist Greg Kowal will present training techniques to maintain strength, and aerobic conditioning & stamina in the off-season (which helps to prevent winter weight gain). Main Line Cycles will present the topics of how to winterize one's bike for harsh weather & road conditions, as well as how to dress effectively for outdoor exercise in the cold. The topic of proper illumination for riding in the dark will be covered. We will have time for socializing, and for posing questions to our expert presenters. REFRESHMENTS will be served. VOLUNTEERS APPRECIATED: If you are able to arrive ~2:15pm to assist with set-up, THANK YOU! Program will run from 3:00 til 5:00pm. Hope to see you there! Today we will have a two-part, early holiday season ride. -- out to Bala Cynwyd and back for coffee (11 miles total), then for those who want to go a little further, we'll go down to the Christmas Village and craft fair at Love Park and Dilworth Plaza, followed by a stop at the Comcast Holiday Light Show ...out through West Fairmount Park, back through East Fairmount Park after crossing the Strawberry Mansion Bridge, then an optional visit to the Holiday activities at City Hall and the Comcast Center. This Sunday I will lead anyone who might want to attend the Night Owls Neighborhood Orchestra Band winter/holiday concert at the Temple Preforming Arts Center in the Chapel of the Four Chaplens, Broad and Polett Walk ( W. Berks St) after the Sunny Sunday Afternoon D Ride. The concert starts by 4pm and lasts about 75 minutes. Walter Johnson, our esteemed member of BCP is performing in the band. Hilly but pretty and meandering loop through southern Chester County, PA and northern Delaware, crossing the scenic Brandywine Creek a few times, as well as a few other creeks and streams. This route is based on a ride led by Tom Madle and Katie Eberhart, with an additional loop around the lovely & peaceful Hoopes Reservoir. We'll ride on "Stargazer Rd", and through green, rural countryside. Optional quick stop in Unionville at mile 19. Indoor rest stop at mile 27 in Kennett Square - choice of eateries.     Level B-: 14mph, 54 (48 shortcut) miles. Meet at Ft. Washington State Park Hawk Watch Parking Lot. The ride leaves at 9:45 am. Scenic loop from Ft. Washington State Park HAWK WATCH parking lot, to Bucks County - peaceful Tyler State Park and the charming (and historic) borough of Newtown, crossing the Neshaminy Creek. (Newtown was founded by William Penn in 1684. The colonial part of town looks especially pretty when decorated for the holidays.) Lunch stop at an indoor food court at mile 24. On the return, we'll cross scenic Springfield Lake in Churchville. At mile 39, there is a mega-Wawa, if another rest stop is needed. Total climbing is 2508 feet - not too strenuous, but enough to burn off some calories in advance of our holiday feasts and treats.     Hike Moderate Pace on Moderate Trails, 6 miles. Meet at Mt Airy Ave. Trailhead. The hike leaves at 9:30 am. 700+ ft. of climbing. (There is plenty of safe, easy parking at the start, but do not leave valuables exposed.) Please join us on a beautiful hike in the central part of the Wissahickon Gorge of Fairmount Park. We will be mostly on trails, with a short stretch on Forbidden Drive. Hiking boots make hiking easier. Bring water and a snack. Dogs are welcome, but they must remain on leash, even on the trails. There are restrooms at the 4-mile mark. This is a hike of contrasts -- we'll climb under a fallen tree and over a work of art, over water and under water (but stay dry), above the creek and along the creek. We'll cross three bridges, but end up on the same side of the creek where we started. We will see some of the oldest trees in the gorge and some of the youngest; some of the flatest terrain and a spot or two of the roughest. (There is a bypass around the rough terrain.)     Level B-: 14mph, 39 miles. Meet at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. The ride leaves at 12:45 pm. FOR DEC. 27 - Leader has to work in the morning, so this ride will leave in the afternoon. Pretty loop from Chestnut Hill to Ambler, Plymouth and Blue Bell. Outbound via Spring Mill, Conshohocken, Plymouth Meeting, and East Norriton. Rest break for coffee & snack in Ambler at mile 25. Return to Chestnut Hill via Fort Washington, Oreland, and Wyndmoor. Our route will take us through or past a couple of cute neighborhood parks. We have ~4.5 miles on the flat SRT and Cross-County Trail. Rolling terrain with total climbing of 2212 ft. No severe climbs. Please being LIGHTS, since we'll be returning around sunset. MEETING POINT at SPRINGSIDE CHESTNUT HILL ACADEMY: Large, off-street parking lot at 8000 Cherokee Street, directly across from the school's athletic field. Ride through Belmont, Wynnewood, Havertown, Haverford, Merion, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Radnor, Devon, Wayne, Gulph Mills, Conshohocken, Manayunk, Bala Cynwyd, etc. Many hills, including 12 (or so) relatively long ones. One 35-minute coffee stop in Devon (Pour Richards) at mile 26 or so. (It's all about the coffee.) Will regroup at top of long hills as needed, but riders are expected to achieve advertised pace (which is what our computers read as "average" at the finish). PLEASE PREREGISTER: It saves time; and increases substantially my ability to read the important info on the sign-in sheet; and it does not matter if you do not show up since we will not wait beyond the scheduled start time.     Hike Moderate Pace on Moderate Trails, 6-8 miles. Meet at Walnut Lane Golf Club. The hike leaves at 9:30 am. Please join us on a hike in the beautiful Wissahickon Gorge of Fairmount Park. We will be hiking on the trails in the southern part of the park. Hiking boots or shoes are recommended. Dogs are welcome but must remained leashed at all times, even on the trails. Bring water and a snack. If you are not familiar with the trails in the south end of the park, be prepared to do the entire hike as it might be difficult to explain the way back to the start at the golf club. Park in the lot on Magdalena Street across from the golf club.

    Level B-: 14mph, 35-40 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. For Dec. 29: Easy, flat afternoon ride from Bruno's to & from Oaks for a coffee & snack break, out & back on the SRT, due to the weather forecast. Rain is predicted to start late afternoon...if it starts to rain while we're heading out to Oaks on the SRT, we'll turn around right away and return to Bruno's. There are several places where we can stop in Oaks for a snack - Dunkin' Donuts, Starbucks, Wawa, etc. If we need to cut it short, there is a cafe in Conshohocken on the SRT. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic loop, usually thru Montgomery Co. or Lower Bucks, with brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, meet most Sundays at Bruno's (finishing point for many of the Sunday AM Wissahickon hikes). Occasionally meet at another location in Chestnut Hill. Plan to return by 5:00pm. Please bring LIGHTS. Specific details posted for week. Every Sunday throughout winter (during hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT 2nd Sun in Feb.
