Fri March 4, 2022 - Friday Frolic Walk w/Linda. Pennypack Trail from Rockledge to Bryn Athyn and Back
Level B-/C+: 13-14mph, 6.5 miles. Meet at Rockledge Park, 205 Rockledge Ave, Rockledge, PA 19046. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. For 3/4: Easy, flat, out-and-back walk along the pretty Pennypack Trail, from Rockledge Park to Bryn Athyn and back. The trail (former railroad line) runs alongside the peaceful Pennypack Creek. Rest stop at the midway point at the All Aboard Cafe - porta-potty and snacks available. Parking at the starting point: free street parking on Rockledge Ave. Well-behaved, canine walkers on leashes are welcome to join us. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Enjoy scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. Hike Moderate Pace on Moderate Trails, 6-7 miles. Meet at Walnut Lane Golf Course. The hike leaves at 9:30 am. Join us on an intermediate hike in the beautiful Wissahickon. We'll be hiking both sides of Lincoln Drive and will visit the site of the McKinney Quarry which in the past supplied stone for Philadelphia buildings, curbs, and streets. Expect some rocky climbs and descents. Hiking is easier with hiking shoes or boots. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but must remain leashed at all times. Restrooms only at the start and finish. Weather forecast is for wet conditions at the start time, clearing later in the afternoon. SO INSTEAD, I will have a flat tire changing demonstration and practice at the 2nd floor of the Cosmic Cafe. The tire fixing will take about an hour. If the weather clears, we will have a short ride. Please contact me if you will be coming for the Tire Demonstration. 610-888-2587. Fri March 11, 2022 - Easy-Schmeasy Friday Frolic Mostly Flat Trail Ride w/Linda.
Level C- through D: 10-11.5mph, 18 miles. Meet at Southampton Trailhead parking lot of Newtown Rail Trail, next to Strathmann Hardware at Second Street Pike & knowles Ave. The ride leaves at 9:45 am. For March 11: Leader is on the road (or trail) to recovery following minor surgery, so today's ride will be an easy, low-intensity ride on the Pennypack & Newtown Rail Trails, out & back linear route. Leader will be riding a recumbent trike. Trail provides very pretty scenery of the peaceful Pennypack Creek. Towards the northern end of the trail, we will cross over the Mill Creek. On the return trip, we can stop at the All Aboard Cafe for snacks. There are porta-potties along the trail, and bathrooms in the parking lot at Moredun Rd. The trail surface is mostly hard-packed dirt, or fine cinder, with a short segment that is smoothly paved asphalt. We will be sharing the trail with walkers and runners, families, and dogs. Sun March 13, 2022 - Final "Hike the Wiss" Hike and Post Hike Social- HIKE IS ON!
Hike Swift Pace on Moderate Trails, 5.5 miles. Meet at Intersection of St. Martins Lane and Huron St.. The hike leaves at 9:30 am. Join us for the last Hike of the Season and Post Hike Social. We plan to start down the road from the post hike social at 7420 St. Martins Lane, Phila. From there, we will hike down the Cresheim Creek Trail and then to the Orange Trail where we will cross the Fingerspan Bridge for the first time this season. The trail to the bridge is very rocky and usually wet which is why we do not use it in the colder months. We will then make a loop on the White Trail near the Monastery Stables and then back up Forbidden Dr. with a detour on the Yellow Trail and finally back up the Cresheim Creek Trail to the start, hopefully around 12:30pm. Assuming the bathrooms are open, we will have a bathroom break at the 4-mile point at Valley Green Inn. The Post Hike Social will be at Chuck Herbert's house, a short walk from there at 505 W. Mermaid Lane, Phila. If you have attended any of our hikes this season, please feel to join us at the Social, even if you can't make this hike, but we request that you email Jim if you are not hiking so we can get an idea of how many to expect at Chuck's. Fri March 18, 2022 - Friday Frolic w/Linda. Easy-Schmeasy Flat Ride - Pennypack and Newtown Rail Trails
Level C through D: 11-12mph, 18 miles. Meet at Southampton trailhead of the Newtown Rail Trail (at old train station) on Second Street Pike, next to Strathmann ACE Hardware. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. For March 18: Leader is on the road (or trail) to recovery following minor surgery, so today's ride will be an easy, low-intensity ride on the Pennypack & Newtown Rail Trails, out & back linear route. Leader will be riding a recumbent trike. Trail provides very pretty scenery of the peaceful Pennypack Creek. Towards the northern end of the trail, we will cross over the Mill Creek. On the return trip, we can stop at the All Aboard Cafe for snacks. There are porta-potties along the trail, and bathrooms in the parking lot at Moredun Rd. The trail surface is mostly hard-packed dirt, or fine cinder, with a short segment that is smoothly paved asphalt. We will be sharing the trail with walkers and runners, families, and dogs. Levels C-: 11mph, D: 10mph, 23 miles. Meet at Cosmic Cafe, Lloyd Hall, # 1 Boathouse Row, Kelly Dr, East Fairmount Park . The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Temperatures are predicted to go up into the 70s. But rain is predicted for the afternoon. So, let's do the shorter route, skipping Flat Rock Park, climbing up Route 23 (Conshohocken State Road) and then enjoying a delightful descent through West Laurel Hill Cemetary. (If the rain is predicted to begin in the late afternoon, we will dip down to Flat Rock Park via Mill Creek Road and back up Hollow Road, but only if the entire group agrees.) Then, if the rain holds off we'll stop at The Landing Kitchen for lunch. If the rain shows up before the ride, I will cancel by 9 AM. If the ride isn't canceled, it's going.
