    Valley Forge Winter Ride - Sunday Edition

    Hike the Wissahickon

    Level hike, 5-7 miles. Valley Green Inn. The ride leaves at 9:30 am.

    Join us for the first hike of 2012 on the first day of 2012. We'll be hiking mainly on trails with some flat options in the beautiful Wissahickon Gorge. Well-behaved 4-legged friends welcome. Optional group lunch at a local eatery afterward.


    Ride to the Mummers Parade (ad-hoc ride)

    Level C+, 13-14 mph, 35 miles. Ft. Washington State Park (hawk watch area). The ride leaves at 11:30 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Let's take advantage of the warmer weather and ride to the parade. Bring a sandwich and/or snacks and be prepared to be standing in the cold while we watch the parade for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. We'll stop at Lloyd Hall on the way in and back for quick bathroom breaks. Should be back by 4:00. Enter park from either Joshua Ave. north of Stenton Ave. or Militia Hill Rd. off of Skippack Pike.


    Sunny Sunday Afternoon D Ride

    Level D, 10 mph, 15-25 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 12:00 pm. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Ring in the New Year with an easy ride in and around City Center with short stops along the Mummers New Years Day Parade. Start the year off with that commitment to cycle at least once a week!


    O.W.L.S. Ride to the New Years Day Parade

    Level D+, 8-13 mph, 24-28 miles. Conshohocken Train Station. The ride leaves at 12:00 pm.

    Meet at the Conshohocken Train Station and ride the SRT to the Kimmel Center. Watch the parade for an hour or two and have a snack at the Kimmel Center...ride back. You know that you will feel really good when you are finished. By the way, O.W.L.S. stands for Older, Wiser, Longer, Slower.


    Sunday C Spin Off

    Level C, 25-35 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 12:15 pm.

Mild afternoon temps and sunny skies are forecasted for New Year's Day Sunday. 28-mile quickie loop from Bruno's to the Whole Foods in North Wales. Rolling terrain with a few brisk climbs, but we will stop to regroup as needed. Brief snack stop at Whole Foods.

    Let's enjoy one of Tom Madle's scenic routes for central Montgomery County. The route will take us through part of Valley Forge Park, then across the Schuylkill River, on our way to the pretty towns of Trappe and Collegeville. Lunch stop in Collegeville @ mile 25. Part of the route will be on the Perkiomen Trail.

    Ride to Devon #3 (ad-hoc ride)

    Level B-/C+, 13-14 mph, 30-35 miles. Starbucks - intersection of Main and Gay Street in Manayunk. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Yet another route from Manayunk to the Devon Whole Foods where we will take a short break about mid-way through the ride. This ride travels along typical very nice rolling Main Line roads and crosses over to Conshohocken on the return trip to Manayunk. We will regroup as needed and return to Manayunk 12-12:30. Look for parking off Main Street or ride to the ride.


    Delightful, Delicious D (and D+/C-) Ride, Saturday Edition

    Level D/D+/C-, 8-13 mph, 19-24 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 10:00 am.

    Anyone for hot coffee, tea, or cocoa, mixed with warm conversation? Let's head west/NW toward the Main Line, at an easy, relaxed pace, in search of a welcoming cafe. We will climb a few hills here & there, but slow & gentle climbing (or walking up hills) is perfectly fine on this ride. We'll stop to regroup as often as needed. Cue sheets will be provided, but the route can be adjusted as needed. Ride is cancelled in the event of rain/snow/ice/slick roads, or if the temperature at start time is less than 28 deg F. PLEASE CONTACT the LEADER AHEAD of TIME, if you plan to join this ride. Also, please contact the Leader if you have questions, e.g., proper layers of clothing. Preregistering (click on the "Preregister" link here) is not required, but will save you time at the ride start.


    Saturday C+ Ride. C+ Pace

    Level C+, 13-15 mph, 45 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Cue sheets will be available.

We'll keep a steady pace and effort (rolling speed on flat terrain 15 - 16 mph). Bring money for a snack. To speed up the lunch stop, we will take and CALL IN ORDERS for prepared food/sandwiches from Toto's at the mid-point of the ride. Friday 9.00 p.m. forecast of 50 percent plus for rain between 8:00 a.m. and noon, or wet roads at 8.00 a.m. Saturday, cancel ride. Check the web site for up-to-date information.


    Peddler's Village to Hopewell, NJ (ad-hoc ride)

    Level B, 14 mph, 52 miles. Peddler's Village parking lot off Street road (behind Sugar Shack) in Lahaska. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Cue sheets will be available.

    From Peddler's Village, we'll cross into NJ at New Hope and cycle to Hopewell for lunch at a cafe at mile 33. After lunch, it will be 19 miles back to the cars. The terrain on this ride is mostly rolling, with a few hills. Along the way, we'll pass by the largest outdoor model train set in the region. My cell is 267-261-1677.

    Scenic loop from Bruno's to the impressive Bryn Athyn Cathedral & College on Huntingdon Pike. This route is based on one of Tom Madle's cue sheets, which takes us from Chestnut Hill to Huntingdon Valley, via Flourtown, Jenkintown, and Rockledge. Quick indoor rest stop around mile 19. Terrain is rolling with a few brisk climbs, but we will stop to regoup as needed. Please bring lights, just in case we are delayed on our return.

    We'll ride towards Doylestown, turning around just before the Lower State/Almshouse bridge that's out. Quick lunch/snack stop at Whole Foods No. Wales on the return.     Tuesday with Rob (ad-hoc ride)

    Conshy Night Lights -- post season (ad-hoc ride)

    Level B, 13-15 mph, 24 +/- miles. Jacobs Engineering Parking Lot, Ash Street, Conshohocken (behind Marriott). The ride leaves at 6:00 pm.

    Looks like the weather will be dry and moderate tomorrow for a ride to the Art Museum and back. Meet at 6 for prompt 6:15 start. We'll keep a steady and moderate pace to suit the group. No one dropped, re-group as needed. Headlight and taillight required.


    MTB on the Pennypack Trails

    Level C+/B-, 9-12 miles. Meet at Pennypack Park Pine Rd. entrance. The ride leaves at 6:30 pm.

    Come enjoy the great outdoors (without cars) after dark! Lights and a trail permit are required (go to www.fairmountpark.org/TrailPermits.asp to purchase a permit). We ride off-road on dirt trails for approximately 1-1/2 hours. Depending on the predicted weather and/or trail conditions, the ride may be cancelled or rescheduled for another evening. Additionally, the ride will occasionally take place at Wissahickon Park. Check the Ride Calendar for changes/updates. Call or e-mail to confirm that the ride is on, and the location.

    This picturesque route is based on a Tom Madle Cue sheet, but we'll be using the Audubon Trail Loop, instead of Pawlings & Eagleville Roads. The route will take us through part of Valley Forge Park, then across the Schuylkill River, on our way to Merrymead Farm Market in Worcester. Our rest stop at Merrymead is at mile 23, then we return to Wayne via Blue Bell and Conshohocken. Depending on the temperature, this route can be shortened, if needed.

    Have you ever wondered how we cycled to Valley Forge National Park, back when the bike club was started in 1979, before there was a Schuylkill River Trail? Come cycle the old route! It is still there - the roads, that is. The donut shop in Bridgeport that makes a deep fried cake donut with cinnamon sugar is still there, too. We, of course, must stop there! We'll make one loop around the Park before returning to Philly via the easier route, the Schuylkill River Trail. Bring a packed lunch; PB&J sandwiches keep well.

    Mostly rolling hills and a few climbs. Start out through Penn Valley and Bryn Mawr and then head toward Paoli. Enjoy some of the best roads in the area. Return back through Villanova, Gladwyne, Belmont Hills and Bala Cynwyd. (Or maybe the reverse direction.) No one gets dropped. Pace determined by the group. Bring a snack for quick mid-ride break.     Sunday HopScotch C Ride

    Level C, 14 mph, 56 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    This is your stress-free, car-free, alternative mellow mileage ride! This is a ride for those who have gotten in shape for longer distances. Sweep is available to help with mechanicals; nobody will be dropped. We take the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) out to Phoenixville, where we will settle in for an unhurried lunch with a nice hot beverage. Each half of the ride is 28 miles, which may seem a lot, but these are flat, car-free miles that pass very quickly. We ride as a group to the SRT trailhead, where individuals familiar with the trail may ride ahead at their own pace, but we'll regroup in Norristown at the Transportation Center. Unhurried lunch will be at the Steel City Coffee House. We should be able to be back in Philly by 3:15 pm. One rule: have fun! Ride may be canceled depending on the predicted weather and/or trail conditions. Check the website for changes and updates. Call or e-mail to confirm that the ride is on.

This will be a recurring, once-a-mid-month ride.

    Lots great roads. Mostly rolling hills with a few climbs. Speed determined by the group. We head out through Penn Valley and Rosemont. Brief stop halfway at Kirkwood Preserve. Bring a snack if you want one. Rain or snow cancels.

    The Manayunk Canal Tow Path portion of the Schuylkilll River Trail has been upgraded so lets check it out and continue on toward Conshohocken where we will cross the river, cycling up the West side to Bridgeport, PA where there is a great donut shoppe! (sadly the Out Bound Station has closed along the SRT at Conshohocken).


    Peddler's Village to Croton, NJ (ad-hoc ride)

    This is your stress-free, car-free, alternative mellow mileage ride! This is a ride for those who have gotten in shape for longer distances. Sweep is available to help with mechanicals; nobody will be dropped. We take the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) out to Phoenixville, where we will settle in for an unhurried lunch with a nice hot beverage. Each half of the ride is 28 miles, which may seem a lot, but these are flat, car-free miles that pass very quickly. We ride as a group to the SRT trailhead, where individuals familiar with the trail may ride ahead at their own pace, but we'll regroup in Norristown at the Transportation Center. Unhurried lunch will be at the Steel City Coffee House. We should be able to be back in Philly by 3:15 pm. One rule: have fun!
