Main Line Cycles Saturday Brisk Ride

French Creek State Park Overnight Bike Camping Trip 5/12-5/13
Level C , 12 mph, 55 - 55 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 8:00 am.
Leader: Tim Carey, , 267-414-9037If you can't go cross country, go overnight! This is the second in a series of self-contained bicycle camping trips. This month, we travel to French Creek State Park. We take the Schuylkill River Trial to Phoenixville where we will buy rations for dinner and breakfast, then head out on Cold Stream and Poughtown Rds to St Peter's Village. A quick coffee at the stream-side cafe will give us give us a shot of energy to get up the hill, last 10 miles. After setting up camp we will cook a simple meal over a camp stove. Take a hot shower and hit the tents for a restful night. Early rise to get breakfast of oatmeal and hot chocolate, the break camp and cycle down and back to home retracing our route of the day before. Shared food expense and camping fees. Next month’s bike camping trip has been changed to Lake Bastow in the NJ Wharton State Forrest, June 2nd and 3rd. Bull's Island Camp grounds have been closed permanently.

Simple route out the Schuylkill River Trail to Phoenixville, then essentially to Cold Stream and Poughtown Roads to the quaint village of St Peter’s. We stop for lunch at a nice restaurant overlooking the rock filled French Creek before heading back to Philadelphia. I know this is a long distance for an early season C ride, but I need to get miles in the saddle before my cross country bike sojourn!

Spin through quaint Leesburg and Dorchester then head inland past Laurel Lake and through no man's land before going bay side again at Fortescue, the weakfish capital of the world, for a sit down lunch at mile 45. Return through Mauricetown with its historic sea captain's houses. No hills, but you will pedal for long stretches without stopping or coasting. One intermediate (and quick) stop at mile 23. Cue sheets available for anyone who wants to set their own pace.This ride will start promptly, so arrive 15 min. early. Take the train with me from Market East Station to Norristown. Meet 7:15 am at the southwest corner of 10th and Filbert St. to board the 7:30 am train or meet me at the Norristown Transportation Center 8 am. We will cycle from there to Phoenixville and then follow the trail map and signs to Reading (the maps say 42 miles from Norristown). The trail might be cinders on parts, paved on other parts, on existing roads or no roads, that's where the exploring comes in! I am allotting 5 hours to get to Reading, one hour for lunch and depart back to Norristown to catch a late train into the city. Anyone game? Rain cancels one hour before departure.
