Previewing a route planned for the Bowers Park Chile Pepper Festival (www.pepperfestival.com) in September. We'll learn as we go. Mostly low traffic roads of flats, rolling hills and likely a couple of climbs. Total elevation gain about 5,000 ft. Will build in some rest stops at Wawa, pizzeria, etc along the way and on return. No one dropped. Regroup as necessary.

Off to Ambler. Some hills. No one dropped. We'll keep a steady pace and regroup at several locations or as necessary. If more than 16 riders, we will split the ride into (1.1 mph avg) faster and slower groups. To shorten the lunch stop, we will call in orders to Toto's for prepared food/sandwiches/salads at the mid-point of the ride. Bring cash for lunch. NOAA 50 percent plus chance of rain between 8:00 a.m. and noon, or wet roads at 8.00 a.m. Saturday cancels ride. Pre-registering doesn't commit you to go, but it does speed the ride start up! Thanks!

    Hills from Philly rev. 2

Level B, 12 mph, 61 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 8:30 am. Cue sheets will be available.
    Leader: Michael Fuller, , 610-551-8256

Why "B"? We regroup at the top of every climb. This is a rework of rev. 1 back in April with more H2O stops (16, 34, 48 miles) and a couple of more hills. We will make a tour of the Main Line out to Devon and back with 18 hills (minimum of 1/2 mile at 4% or higher grade).

    Rio Negro (ad-hoc ride)

Level B/B-, 13.23 mph, 71 miles. the shopping center at Cherry St. & NJ 29 in Lambertville, NJ.. The ride leaves at 8:30 am. Cue sheets will be available.
    Leader: David C. Ziccardi, , 267-230-8995

Sweet ride in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties to the Oldwick General store at mile 33, where we will relax for a bit in the store's garden. Rolling terrain on the way out with more challenging hills coming home, including the climb around Round Valley and the dreaded Spring Hill Rd. 4,400' of total climbing, but the final 6 miles are down hill (gorgeous Lower Creek Rd.) or flat. Please arrive at least 15 min. early as this ride will start on time. I want to beat the lunch rush at the store. It's a good idea to bring snacks just in case the store is very busy. Bring two water bottles as there is only one place to stop on the way back and it's only 7 miles after the store. And, of course, two tubes. You can ride ahead if you like, but be prepared to follow the cue sheet yourself if you do. Occasional re-grouping at key spots, but the same applies if you are consistently and significantly off the back. Check this listing after 6 a.m. the morning of for a non-go message in case I get hit with a falling piece of space junk like I did a few weeks ago.

Belmar Beach -- Someplace New & Different (ad-hoc ride). CARPOOLING available. Recumbent- and tandem-friendly route.

Level B-, 14-15 mph, 72 miles. Etra Lake Park, Disbrow Hill Rd, East Windsor, NJ. The ride leaves at 8:30 am. Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1393497.
    Leader: Linda McGrane, , 267-251-7862

Encore of the ride to Belmar on 7/28, but with much brighter and drier weather. Weather forecast for Sunday the 12th is spectacular -- sunny and warm, but not hot. Enjoy a scenic route to the central Jersey shore, popular with the Princeton FreeWheelers. In addition to cycling along Ocean Drive in the pretty seaside towns of Sea Girt, Spring Lake and Belmar, we’ll also ride around Perrineville Lake, Manasquan Reservoir, and Lake Como. Stop at Belmar Beach at mile 40 for lunch & to enjoy the beach, plus rest stops along the way, to and from Belmar. The middle of the route (at the shore) is pancake flat. The beginning and end portions have a few gently rolling hills, but we will stop to regroup as needed. Total elevation gain is 2265 ft. This gentle terrain is hospitable to tandems and recumbents. Many of the roads have nice tree cover for shade. Aahh, shade! Directions to the starting point at Etra Lake Park: 1) New Jersey Turnpike North to Exit 8 – Hightstown/Freehold. 2) From the Turnpike exit ramp, turn right onto NJ-33 East/Franklin St. 3) In 0.6 miles, turn right onto Milford Rd. 4) In 1.1 miles, turn left at “T” at County Rd 571/Etra- Perrineville Rd. (Etra Lake will be on your left.) 5) In 0.2 miles, turn left at 3-way onto Disbrow Hill Rd. Parking lot will be on your left. Please allow 60-75 mins driving time from Phila, although Sunday morning traffic on the Turnpike should be very light. CARPOOLING: If riders would like to car-pool, Upper Dublin High School at Fort Washington & Loch Alsh would be a convenient meeting point -- very close to 309, near Ft. Washington exit of PA Turnpike. Leader will be at UDHS at 7am. Leader can take one passenger but several bikes in back of mini-van. From UDHS, we'll take PA Turnpike east to connect with NJ Turnpike.
