    Main Line Cycles Brisk Ride

    Great roads with low traffic. We have a few routes that bring us out around or through Ridley Creek State Park.     Early Bird Ride to Coffee in Lansdale (ad-hoc ride)

    Level B: 15mph, 60 +/- miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 8:30 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Assemble at 8:30. Depart at 8:35 SHARP! Going out via Upper Dublin High School and Cedar Hill Road, return via Gwynedd Mercy University and Brushtown Road. Several hills but no killers. 30-minute coffee stop at Backyard Beans. (It's all about the coffee!). Will regroup at top of hills if necessary, but riders are expected to maintain posted speed (what our computers read upon ride completion). PLEASE PREREGISTER: saves time; ensures that I will be able to read important emergency info; and no problem if you change your mind and don't show up since we will not be waiting past the posted departure time. Ride may be cancelled up to 1 hour prior to departure time.


    Havertown Grill

    Level D: 8-10mph, 25 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    I really like going to the Havertown Grill ever since they expanded their dinning room many years ago. So let's go. We will cycle out the city line side and back thur the city over Market St.


    Chadds Ford to Hoopes Reservoir in Delaware, via Brandywine River. Co-Leader Welcome

    Level B-: 14mph, 50 miles. Meet at Parking lot behind the Chadds Ford Post Office, at US-1/Baltimore Pike, PA-100/Creek Rd, and Hoffman's Mill Rd. The ride leaves at 9:15 am. Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6619794.

    Hilly but pretty and meandering loop through southern Chester County, PA and northern Delaware, crossing the scenic Brandywine Creek a few times, as well as a few other creeks and streams. This route is based on a ride led by Tom Madle and Katie Eberhart, with an additional loop around the lovely & peaceful Hoopes Reservoir. We'll ride on "Stargazer Rd", and through green, rural countryside. Optional quick stop in Unionville at mile 19. Indoor rest stop at mile 27 in Kennett Square - choice of eateries. Total elevation gain is 3000 ft. We will stop to regroup as needed. Most of the climbing is in the first half. Please bring an on-bike snack with you, as well as two water bottles. We will stop to regroup as needed. No one dropped, but we will try to maintain 13mph average, as advertised. Plan is to return by 2:15pm.     Winter Bee - Devon via Mt Pleasant/Maplewood

    A winter B ride with longer rides when warmer, shorter rides when colder (or prospect of rain). Total elevation ~ 2500 ft. The average speed (measured at end of ride) is likely to be 14.5 - 15.5 mph. We will regroup as needed, but riders are expected to ride group pace. Coffee stop at Devon Donut & Bagel Co. Bring a spare tube. Check daily listing for GPS route information. Ride may be cancelled up to an hour before ride time.


    Spring Mill to Collegeville Wegmans

    Level B-/C+: 14-14.5mph, 35-40 +/- miles. Meet at Spring Mill Train Station, Conshohocken, PA. The ride leaves at 9:30 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Sorry for the late post. Out and back to Wegmans. A few hills to get up and back from Collegeville. Bring an on bike snack and something to drink. Dress in layers so that you can shed clothes as the day gets warmer. Potty stops on the way out and back and lunch/snack at Wegmans. Riders should be able to maintain the average pace, faster on flats, slower on hills. Regroup as needed. No cue sheets, pretty straightforward route.

    Assemble at 9:15. We willl leave at 9:20 SHARP! Ride through Belmont, Wynnewood, Havertown, Haverford, Merion, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Radnor, Devon, Wayne, Gulph Mills, Conshohocken, Manayunk, etc. Many hills, including 12 (or so) relatively long ones. One 30-minute coffee stop in Devon (Pour Richards) at mile 26 or so. (It's all about the coffee.) Will regroup at top of long hills as needed, but riders are expected to achieve advertised pace (which is what our computers read as "average" at the finish). PLEASE PREREGISTER: It saves time; and increases substantially my ability to read the important info on the sign-in sheet; and it does not matter if you do not show up since we will not wait beyond the scheduled start time. NOTE: Ride may be cancelled up to 1 hour prior to departure time.


    Hike the Wissahickon

    Hike Moderate Pace on Moderate Trails, 6-8 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The hike leaves at 9:30 am.

    Please join us on a hike in the beautiful Wissahickon Gorge of Fairmount Park. We will be hiking mainly on trails with some flat options if you are pressed for time or would like a shorter, less strenuous route. We will explore the Summit Avenue re-route and, on the east side of the creek, will see the striped rock- a geologic treasure. Appropriate footwear is recommended including ice grips for your hiking boots or shoes if conditions are icy. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but they must remain on leash, even on the trails.


    Sunny Sunday D Ride

    Level D: 9-11.5mph, 14-24 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 12:00 pm.

    OWLS (Older, Wiser, Longer, Slower) paced ride for any age through Fairmount Park and beyond. Distance will depend on assemble group's experience and weather conditions. Good holliday spirit is welcomed.


    Sunny Sunday C Spin-Off

    Sunday PM (Post-Hike) Winter Ramble Ride - Bruno's to Narberth, via Manayunk Bridge Trail

    Level B-: 14mph, 35 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26531303.

    For 12/2: Pretty loop from Bruno's in Chestnut Hill to Narberth, via SRT and Manayunk Bridge Trail. Rest stop at Wawa at mile 21.Outbound via Plymouth Meeting and Spring Mill. Return from Narberth via the Pencoyd Bridge, Barren Hill Rd to Harts Lane. Total climbing 1840 feet. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic, 30-35-ish mile loop, usually through Montgomery County or Lower Bucks, with a brief rest stop. Unless otherwise stated, this winter afternoon ride will meet most Sundays at Bruno's Diner (finishing point for many of the Sunday morning Wissahickon hikes). Instead of Bruno's, we may on occasion meet at another location in Chestnut Hill. Even if you don't join the hike in the morning, you are welcome to cycle with us on this afternoon ride! We will stop to regroup if needed, but try as much as possible to maintain 13-15mph, due to short daylight. Plan is to return before 5:00pm. Please bring LIGHTS, just in case we return in the nick of time. Please ensure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Specific details will be posted for each Sunday's Route. Scheduled for EVERY Sunday throughout the winter (for the duration of the hiking season), weather permitting, EXCEPT for the second Sunday in February (2/10/19). This ride will resume on the third Sunday of February, and continue til the end of hiking season in mid-March. If winter weather conditions are not conducive to cycling, this ride may be replaced by a snow activity, e.g., cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. As long as we keep moving throughout the winter, we will maintain our base fitness level for the return of spring cycling in mid-March.

Today's route will go out Bryn Mar Ave, the Cynwd Heritage Trail, over Manayunk Trail Bridge, up the Manayunk Canal Tow Path, then follow River Rd using the the back approach to Riverbend Cafe and Bicycle Shop.     BIRDSBORO - Pagoda in the Dark

    The monthly first-Wednesday nighttime Pagoda ride - another road trip to Birdsboro to ride to the Pagoda in the dark. A strong headlight and taillight are required. This ride has a mix of rural and urban riding conditions. It features over 2000 feet of climbing over 28 miles. Aside from the Pagoda, the star of the ride is the final 15 miles of mostly downhill terrain, starting with a screaming descent of Mt Penn. No one dropped, but please be prepared to ride the advertised pace over rolling to hilly terrain. Precipitation cancels. Ice on the road cancels. Temperatures below 15 degrees at the scheduled start time cancels.

    Today's weather forecast calls for afternoon high temperature of 40 degrees. This is a pretty route from the Jenkintown Whole Foods Market to the giant Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting, then back. Outbound via Abington, Oreland, and Blue Bell. Return via Plymouth-Whitemarsh, Flourtown, and Glenside. Indoor rest stop for something hot at Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting at the half-way mark. Total elevation gain 1875 ft. Mostly rolling terrain, no killer climbs. Most of the climbing comes before the rest stop. We should be back to the finish by ~2:30pm. MEETING POINT in Jenkintown: the Whole Foods Market on the Fairway is ~1 mile east of Old York Road/PA-611. Park at the far end of the lot, near the Rydal Park senior apt complex. GENERIC DESCRIPTION: Scenic adventures by bike on most Fridays, throughout the year. Explore pretty, peaceful roads in suburban counties -- Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, etc. Starting points will vary, so that we can cycle through different regions.     The Northeast Rail carridoor holds many insights into the grand Philadelphia past and the future grandeur of the future. W. Sedgle Ave runs along the north side of this rail road. Experience the revitalization of North Philly row homes, converted wearhouse, breweries, coal yards,, schools, churches and ballparks. Will Philadelphia have the guts to continue the transformation of the North Philadelphia AMTRAK Train Station into vibrant commuter hub for a "greater neighborhood "? Return over a small section of the Eastcoast Greenway/Delaware River Tail for coffee at the River Wards Cafe.

Outbound via Bryn Mawr and Villanova, return via Haverford . Cycle through peaceful horse farm countryside. Rolling to hilly terrain with total elevation of 3241feet. Plan is to return by 2:45pm.

    C the Perk

    Level C: 12mph, 35 miles. Meet at Lower Perkiomen Valley Park. The ride leaves at 9:00 am.

    Trail ride up the Perkiomen Creek. 28 mm or wider tires recommended. Hybrid, cross, mountain bike friendly. Much of the trail is sand, stone dust, and quarter inch sized gravel. VERY scenic. Bring snacks and H2O. Meet at Lower Perkiomen Park.


    Hike the "Wiss"

    Hike Moderate Pace on Moderate Trails, 8-9 miles. Meet at Valley Green Inn. The hike leaves at 9:30 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    We will start with a climb behind Valley Green and head off into the woods, hopefully not being eaten by a flesh eating deer. Wear appropriate boots as it may be messy on the trails. Well behaved dogs are welcome but are required to be on a leash.


    G.R.I.T. Ride - Longford Park to Ludwigs Corner

    Hillier ride to Ludwigs Corner covering 25 road miles and 15 gravel road and trail miles. Convenience store rest-stop at mile 20.5. Bring your 29er, CX, Gravel or equip your road bike with wider tires as we mashup rides across various asphalt, gravel and sometimes dirt terrains. Expect a good challenge as we grind gravel trails and hit a few climbs with great company for no other purpose than to have fun and put in a few unpaved miles.

Social and educational meeting for members, to help us "Keep Rolling Through the Winter," that is, how to maintain one's physical fitness & conditioning (via outdoor and/or indoor training), how to winterize one's bicycle for cold weather & harsh road conditions, and, how to dress properly for outdoor activities in the cold. Physical Therapists Kira Sender and Greg Kowal will present training techniques to maintain strength, and aerobic conditioning & stamina in the off-season (which helps to prevent winter weight gain). Main Line Cycles will present the topics of how to winterize one's bike for harsh weather & road conditions, as well as how to dress effectively for outdoor exercise in the cold. The topic of proper illumination for riding in the dark will be covered. We will have time for socializing, and for posing questions to our expert presenters. REFRESHMENTS will be served. Ride across Manayunk Bridge, and then through Bala Cynwyd, Merion, Havertown, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Radnor, Devon, Wayne, Gulph Mills, etc. Several hills, including 10 (or so) relatively long ones. One 35-minute coffee stop in Devon (Pour Richards) at mile 24 or so. (It's all about the coffee.) Will regroup at top of long hills as needed, but riders are expected to achieve advertised pace (which is what our computers read as "average" at the finish). In order to keep moving, we will NOT be doing the indoor Xmas show at Longwood - we will just make a quick stop to admire the outdoor decorations. After Longwood Gardens, there's a Wawa stop if needed at mile 36 on the return. We'll mostly be on the trails but there are also flatter options along the way for those who want a more direct way back. The trails can get wet and icy so be sure you have appropriate footwear (sturdy shoes and ice cleats are recommended).     Scenic loop from Ft. Washington State Park HAWK WATCH parking lot, to Bucks County - peaceful Tyler State Park and the charming (and historic) borough of Newtown, crossing the Neshaminy Creek. (Newtown was founded by William Penn in 1684. The colonial part of town looks especially pretty when decorated for the holidays.) Lunch stop at an indoor food court at mile 24. On the return, we'll cross scenic Springfield Lake in Churchville. At mile 39, there is a mega-Wawa, if another rest stop is needed. Total climbing is 2508 feet - not too strenuous, but enough to burn off some calories in advance of our holiday feasts and treats.     Please join us on a hike in the beautiful Wissahickon Gorge of Fairmount Park. We will be mainly on trails as we visit Hermit's Cave, Lover's Leap and the Toleration statue. Wear appropriate footwear and consider ice grippers for your shoes or boots depending upon conditions. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but THEY MUST REMAIN LEASHED EVEN ON THE TRAILS. If you do not know the trails in the park, the route this week will not allow you to easily break off if you do not want to do the whole hike. We plan to complete the hike by 12:30PM.

    Afternoon loop, since the morning rain is forecasted to taper off by mid-day. Easy, mostly flat route from Bala Cynwyd, along the SRT, almost to Phoenixville, then to Oaks for a quick coffee stop. On the outbound portion, we cross the Schuylkill River on the Pencoyd Bridge. On the return, we cross the river on the Manayunk Trail Bridge. Total climbing 1440 feet. At the mid-way coffee stop, we have a choice of Wawa, Dunkin' Donuts, or Starbucks. Plan is to return before 4:30pm. Please bring lights.
