Sun October 23, 2016 - Ride to the Races

Level C (trail), 11-12 mph, 33+ miles. Meet at Valley Forge National Park - Betzwood Picnic Area (by bathrooms). The ride leaves at 9:00 am. This is a TRAIL RIDE with mixed paved and gravel surface (think mountain bike or hybrid) Schuylkill River and Perkiomen Trails, to a cyclocross race in Upper Salford Park. Tires 28mm or wider suggested. We will be on the roads for about 4 miles, and there will be a hill. Pace will be medium. Light rain will NOT cancel the ride. For those of you who do not know what cyclocross is, there will be a combination of on and off road riding with “steeplechase” type obstacles that force the riders to dismount the bike and carry it as fast as they can, over or around the obstacle. The course is laid out with yellow plastic tape around fields, through woods, and on paved bike paths and driveways, with natural and constructed obstructions. Frequently there is mud involved... Usually a lot of the course is visible from the main start/finish area, so you can track the progress of a rider for most of the race. I am planning to stay and watch for a while. 30-45 minutes??? OK, I have another ulterior motive. I am scouting out the park as a potential food stop for the bike club’s fall century ride. Anyone who wants to leave early is welcome to do so. Please let me know. The route is NOT complicated. 90% of it is on the trails. Option to ride further up the trail after watching some of the race. If you have not explored the full length of the Perk, this would be a nice chance. Bathroom at the park. Food stops on an ad hoc basis. Bring snacks, and 2 full H2O bottles or a camelbak style backpack. Pack a windbreaker in a pocket or backpack. Cue sheets will be available.

Finally, at PA 183, the assault of Blue Mountain begins, followed by a screaming downhill to the parking lot where it all started. This ride features low traffic, beautiful fall foliage, a wooded hill climb, a Sikh temple, a Hindu temple, cows, sheep, horses and beautiful vistas. Please bring sufficient water and fuel with you - there are few opportunities to replenish supplies between miles 5 and 31 and between mile 31 and the end of the ride. If there is anyone who does not feel up to climbing Blue, I will have cue sheets for a 41 mile version that stays on the south side of Blue Mountain. The routes are identical until the rest stop, and will not have a ride leader for the return to Strausstown, unless someone volunteers. Cue sheets will be available. The on-line route map is https://ridewithgps.com/routes/3489663.
