Occasionally, ad-hoc rides are announced. These rides are sent by email to all members of the BCP email list. To join this list, click here.     Explore some peaceful, picturesque roads in Montgomery County, from Chestnut Hill, almost to Evansburg State Park, turning around at Eagleville. There will be an indoor rest stop at mile 19.     Level D/D+/C-, 8-13 mph, 19-24 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Cue sheets will be available.

    Anyone for hot coffee, tea, or cocoa, mixed with warm conversation? Let's head west/NW toward the Main Line, at an easy, relaxed pace, in search of a welcoming cafe. We will climb a few hills here & there, but slow & gentle climbing (or walking up hills) is perfectly fine on this ride. We'll stop to regroup as often as needed. Cue sheets will be provided, but the route can be adjusted as needed. Ride is cancelled in the event of rain/snow/ice/slick roads, or if the temperature at start time is less than 28 deg F. We'll keep a steady pace and effort (rolling speed on flat terrain 15-16 mph). Bring money for a snack. A forecast on Friday at 9:00 pm calling for 50% or greater chance of rain on Saturday between 8:00 am and noon, or wet roads on Saturday at 8:00 am, will cancel the ride.     Level C+/B-, 13+ mph, 30 miles. Starbucks at corner of Main and Gay Streets in Manayunk. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will be available.

    We'll head toward Villanova via Ardmore/Havertown, take a quick break in Villanova a little more than 1/2 way through and then head back to Manayunk via Belmont Hills. Hill at the beginning, hill near the end, rolling in the middle for a little less than 2000' elevation gain. We will return 12-12:30. No one will be dropped and we will regroup as needed. Free parking on Main Street on Sundays; Main Street movie theater parking lot is another option.


    Valley Forge Winter Ride - Sunday Edition

    Hike the Wissahickon

    Hike All hikers, 3-4 mph, 5-7 miles. Walnut Lane Golf Course -- gravel parking lot at Walnut Ln & Magdalena St, one block east of Henry Ave. The hike leaves at 9:30 am.

    Let's enjoy climbing some trails on both sides of the Wissahickon Creek, starting from the southern end of the park. There will be a flat option available for part of the hike. Well-behaved canine hikers are warmly welcome to join us. Optional group lunch after the hike.


    Helen's Sunday Jaunt (ad-hoc ride)

    Level C, 12-13 mph, 25 miles. Meet at Upper Dublin High School. The ride leaves at 10:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Let's take an early season ride ambling near Montco Community College and Maple Glen. We will have a rest stop at Danielle's Espresso Cafe in Maple Glen on the way back. (Danielle's is a new rest stop for me so we will give it a try.) No one dropped and will regroup as needed. Rain cancels.


    Sunday HopScotch C Ride

    Level C, 14 mph, 56 miles. Meet at Italian Fountain behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 10:00 am.

    This is your stress-free, car-free, alternative mellow mileage ride! This is a ride for those who have gotten in shape for longer distances. Sweep is available to help with mechanicals; nobody will be dropped. We take the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) out to Phoenixville, where we will settle in for an unhurried lunch with a nice hot beverage. Each half of the ride is 28 miles, which may seem a lot, but these are flat, car-free miles that pass very quickly. We ride as a group to the SRT trailhead, where individuals familiar with the trail may ride ahead at their own pace, but we'll regroup in Norristown at the Transportation Center. Unhurried lunch will be at the Steel City Coffee House. We should be able to be back in Philly by 3:15 pm. One rule: have fun! Ride may be canceled depending on the predicted weather and/or trail conditions. Check the website for changes and updates. Call or e-mail to confirm that the ride is on.


    Sunny Sunday Afternoon D Ride

    Level D, 10-12 mph, 16-20 miles. Meet at Azalea Garden's formal entrance, behind the Art Museum. The ride leaves at 12:00 pm.

    Sunday Afternoon Winter Ramble -- Chestnut Hill to Willow Grove

    Level C+/B-, 13-15 mph, 29-30 miles. Meet at Bruno's, Northwestern and Germantown Aves. The ride leaves at 1:15 pm. Cue sheets will be available.

    Scenic loop from Chestnut Hill to Willow Grove, via Blue Bell, Ambler, and Maple Glen. Indoor rest stop in Willow Grove at mile 19, then return via Abington, Glenside and Flourtown. Rolling terrain with a few brisk climbs, but we will stop to regroup as needed. Please make sure that your bike is ready (e.g., tires inflated) before start time, and please bring lights, just in case we are delayed. (Fortunately, daylight is getting longer.)

We ride off-road on dirt trails for approximately 1-1/2 hours. Depending on the predicted weather and/or trail conditions, the ride may be cancelled or rescheduled for another evening.     Scenic loop from Valley Forge, heading north into central Montgomery County. We'll pass through Norristown Farm Park, then continue to Harleysville for an indoor lunch stop at the halfway point. On our return, we will ride near Skippack Creek, skirting around the perimeter of Evansburg State Park, but not in the park. The last few miles back to Valley Forge will be on the Perkiomen and Schuylkill River trails.

    Let's do this again so that milage can increase the next three months, Bettswood Rest area of Valley Forge Park, Pheonixville, PA, then Collegeville, all using the realitively flat, gradual up hill Schuylkill River Trail. The Manayunk Canal Tow Path portion of the Schuylkilll River Trail has been upgraded so lets check it out and continue on toward Conshohocken where we will cross the river, cycling up the West side to Bridgeport, PA where there is a great donut shoppe! (sadly the Out Bound Station has closed along the SRT at Conshohocken.) Returning on the Trail all the way back.

    We'll hike the trails of the beautiful Wissahickon gorge, plus a mile or two or three through historic Chestnut Hill. Responsible hikers with any number of legs welcome.     Scenic loop from Chestnut Hill to the Whole Foods Market in North Wales, via Oreland, Fort Washington, & Ambler. After a brief snack break at Whole Foods, we'll return to Chestnut Hill via Gwynedd and Blue Bell. Elevation gain is just under 2000 feet. Rolling terrain with a few brisk climbs, but we'll stop to regroup as needed. Please make sure that your bike is ready before start time, so that we can leave promptly. Plan is to be back by 4:45--5:00pm. Please note the special starting location (NOT Bruno's), and slightly later start time (1:30, not 1:15).

This is a recurring, once a mid-month ride.

    Have you ever wondered how we cycled to Valley Forge National Park, back when the bike club was started in 1979, before there was a Schuylkill River Trail? Come cycle the old route! It is still there - the roads, that is. The donut shop in Bridgeport that makes a deep fried cake donut with cinnamon sugar is still there, too. We, of course, must stop there! We'll make one loop around the Park before returning to Philly via the easier route, the Schuylkill River Trail. Bring a packed lunch; PB&J sandwiches keep well


    MLC Saturday Brisk Ride (ad-hoc ride)

    Level B+, 15-17 mph, 40 miles. Meet at Main Line Cycles back parking lot, Narberth, PA. The ride leaves at 9:00 am. Cue sheets will not be available.

    Lots of great roads. Mostly rolling hills with a few climbs. Speed determined by the group. We head out through Penn Valley and Rosemont. Then through Radnor towards Paoli to Waynesborough Country Club. South towards Newtown Square and back through Villanova, Gladwyne, Belmont Hills and Bala Cynwyd. No one gets dropped. Brief stop halfway at Kirkwood Preserve. Bring a snack if you want one. Rain or snow cancels.

    Califonia Dreaming (ad-hoc ride)

    Level B-, 13 mph, 55 miles. Parking lot off Bridge St. in Frenchtown, NJ. The ride leaves at 9:30 am. Cue sheets will be available.

    Leaving from Frenchtown we'll ride to the small town of Califon via Spruce Run, High Bridge and likely the unpaved Columbia Trail (road option available). The way back takes us past Round Valley Reservoir. Several ups and downs and pretty roads. Since it's early in the season for most of us, the pace will be slower than normal. Off the front or back and you will be on your own. Couple of snack/water stops along the way. No sit down lunch. The ride will start promptly, so plan your arrival accordingly.     Mini-ride from the Betzwood Picnic area of the Schuylkill River Trail at Valley Forge to & from Phoenixville, to connect with (& add miles to) a special "Womens Ride Day" event sponsored nationally by Specialized, and locally by Phoenix Cycles at 165 Bridge St, leaving at 10am. On the SRT, it's 6.5 miles each way, between Betzwood and the shop in Phoenixville. The leaders of the Womens Ride Day event will be leading a 30-mile loop on rolling terrain, pretty and peaceful roads, a no-drop ride, 13-15 mph average, with half-way rest stop at Java's Brewin' on Ridge Pike in Royersford/Limerick (www.javasbrewinpa.com).     This is your stress-free, car-free, alternative mellow mileage ride! This is a ride for those who have gotten in shape for longer distances. Sweep is available to help with mechanicals; nobody will be dropped. We take the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) out to Phoenixville, where we will settle in for an unhurried lunch with a nice hot beverage. Each half of the ride is 28 miles, which may seem a lot, but these are flat, car-free miles that pass very quickly. We ride as a group to the SRT trailhead, where individuals familiar with the trail may ride ahead at their own pace, but we'll regroup in Norristown at the Transportation Center. We’ll check out the Polish American Citizen's Club for a late brunch this week… bring some cash and a big appetite (thanks for the suggestion, Mike O.!).     We will cycle up the New Jersey side of the Delaware River to Burlington via River Road but first we will need to bike up the walkway over the Ben Franklin Bridge and portage our bikes down three flights of stairs on the other side. (The Delaware River Port Authority has put back the monies for the design studies to extend the sidewalk down to street level)Come experience the river from the other side and be surprised how lovely the old Victorian mansions have survived and the beauty of the tree lined streets. Return via walking our bikes over the Tacony Plamyra Bridge and cycling through the River Wards of Philadelphia.

Plan is to be back in VF by 3:00. - For those interested, we will do an extra 18 mile loop thru central Chester County back to Kimberton Wholefoods. Riders do not have to decide their distance option until the first Kimberton stop. For those opting for the 53 route, we should be back in VF ~ 4:45pm
